With version

Music happen to be the food of love
Sounds to really make you rub and scrub

[Chorus]
Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side
Pass the Dutchie on the left hand side
It a gonna burn, give me music make me jump and prance
It a go done, give me the music make me rock in the dance

It was a cool and lovely breezy afternoon
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
You could feel it 'cause it was the month of June
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
So I left my gate and went out for a walk
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)
As I pass the dreadlocks' camp I heard them say
(How does it feel when you've got no food?)

[Chorus]

So I stopped to find out what was going on.
(How does it feel when you've got no food ?)
'Cause the spirit of Jah, you know he leads you on
(How does it feel when you've got no food ?)
There was a ring of dreads and a session was there in swing
(How does it feel when you've got no food ?)
You could feel the chill as I seen and heard them say
(How does it feel when you've got no food ?)

[Chorus]

'Cause me say listen to the drummer, me say listen to the bass
Give me little music make me wind up me waist
Me say listen to the drummer, me say listen to the bass
Give me little music make me wind up me waist, I say

[Chorus]

You play it on the radio, a so me say, we a go hear it on the stereo
A so me know you a go play it on the disco
A so me say we a go hear it on the stereo

[Chorus]

I say east, say west, say north and south (on the left hand side)
This is gonna make us jump and shout (on the left hand side)

General Comment:I'm pretty sure this song IS NOT about ganja
in most of the song it says "how does it feel when you got no food"
dutchie is a pan, i doubt that they're smoking ganja out of a cigar there more
    graceful than that.

I think the song has a bigger meaning than a pan and/or ganja
it's about how JAH leading them to the music, well not just the music
but together with other people. Where they're sharing their food.
This song says nothing that hints that they're high, I know we would all liketo think
    thats what they're doing

BUT NO. The fact of the matter is they aren't, that's not all rastas do....they are more complex than that
yes alot of popular rastas smoke but wtf that's not all of them.....
reggae is actually like african gospel, yeah there some like sublime(not hating on sublime i love em) that take it to another level where honestly it's not what reggae is or suppose to be. But at the end of the day most reggae talks about JAH which is another word for god, So...um... yeah

General Comment:The song was a cover version of the song "Pass the Kouchie" by The Mighty Diamonds, written by Leroy Sibbles and Jackie Mittoo. The song was changed from "Kouchie", a slang term for a cannabis smoking pipe, to "Dutchie" (pronounced "doo-chee", which sounds like "kouchie") due to the age of the artists and their target audience. A "Dutchie" was slang for a dutch oven, a type of cooking pot used by poor Jamaicans to prepare stews and rice. It can also refer to a Dutchie Ball, a small ball used in Zimbabwe playgrounds. The term "dutchie" would, ironically, later be appropriated as part of cannabis slang to refer to marijuana rolled in a cigar paper, specifically "Dutch Masters" cigars, hence the name "dutchie".

General Comment:bloodybitch is right, a dutchie is a pan but you can also call it a pot. they had to change it to dutchie because young kids like that couldnt release a song about Koutchie, real pot. they explained it all on vh1's greatest one hit wonders.

General Comment:I had originaly heard the dutchie being a pan (food bowl)....but now im not so convinced :p

The line's "There was a ring of dreads and a session was there in swing" and "It a gonna burn". These lines dont sound very inocent to me lol

And if you listen carefuly, throughout the song, you can clearly hear the sound of someone sucking in air....like they're smoking something :p

General Comment:Actually, the song is 100% for sure about smoking marijuana. the original lyric was "Koutchie" in this song, but they had to change it because the UK would not air the song on the radio or on tv because of the drug reference. So, they changed the lyric and made it "dutchie." As seen and told on VH1s Top 100 One Hit Wonders.

General Comment:Actually, Dutchie is also the nickname for a Dutch Master Cigar -- (makes more sense than a song about passing a cooking pot considering where it came from)

    This online dictionary:
    urbandictionary.com/…

...mentions cigar and also the pot definitions... it looks more like they just swapped one smokable for another - but hey - I wonder what Musical Youth would say about it ;)
