There's a girl in my yard
Reading to me my tarot cards
She don't know anything
But she's beautiful to me

My eyes are opening again
I see you as you're marching in
I'll bring you cover when you're cold
You'll bring me youth when I grow old

Do you remember when you were small
How everybody would seem so tall
I am your shadow in the dark
I have your blood inside my heart

General Comment:"There's a girl in my yard, reading to me tarot cards" means that a girl telling him his future possibly implying a relationship or tempting him with a future with her. "She don't know anything but she's beautiful to me" implies that she's wrong because he is in control of his own future or possibly that he is not ready for one but that he will love her no matter what. "My eyes are opening again I see you as you're marching in I'll bring you over when you're cold You'll bring me youth when I grow old" means as long as he keeps her safe and comfortable she will stay with him and make him feel young until death do them apart. "Do you remember when you were small How everybody would seem so tall" means we are no longer young and have grown up. "I am your shadow in the dark
I have your blood inside my heart" seems to be implying that the girl has touched his heart in some way and he can't seem to break away from her.

General Comment:Upon reading the Cobain theory, and realizing my first thought of this song was its grunge sound, I think I can partially throw out my interpretation relating the lyrics to Alice in Wonderland(tarot cards specifically).

General Comment:it's funny about the interpretations of the word "bean," I always think of the bean in chicago. maybe that's just a regional bias ;)

I agree though, it seems this is about a man and his daughter. the writers above have done a good job elaborating.

General Comment:i love this song dearly. although it's probably about a relationship or something similar, i've always hoped it was about Mr. Bean.

General Comment:this song is chillingly beautiful, no matter the interpretation.

here's mine: a naive girl swept up in the grandeur of gothicism, living it all through a veil of naïveté. he takes advantage of her childish infatuation, and forgives her for her meaningless playtoys (ex: tarot cards) that he knows are silliness. he doesn't mind that she buys into such foolishness, she is beautiful to him in spite of all that because he is a vampire, and she, his source of life. "you'll bring me youth when i grow old" & "i am your shadow in the dark" & lastly,

"i have your blood inside my heart."

General Comment:Britt didn't write this song. I can't remember who did but if you look in the liner notes to Kill the Moonlight, you can find out for yourself.

General Comment:I'm not sure but it seems to me that this song is about Kurt Cobain's daughter; Frances Bean Cobain.

For a start this is an incredibly Nirvana-like song (for spoon) britt daniels is doing a very good cobain impression and the musical arrangement (bar keydoards) is entirely lifted from "Lithium", down to the "Woah-oh-oh-oh"s in the chorus of both songs.

The lyrics are quite obviously in referance to a man's feelings towards his daughter. She's young, so doesn't know anything, is beautiful to him, and "reading (his) tarots cards"; she represents his future. He describes protecting now she is young, and hopes she will care for him when he is old.

In the final verse he in emphatic with the child; remembering in himself how the world must seem to her. Then, right at the end, he pronouces clearly the relationship he has been speaking of. He is her "shadow in the dark", he will constantly stand behind her, out of the limelight, throughout her life. And finally, he tells us it is truely a familial bond, for he "has (her) blood inside (his) heart", showing he sees her as a continuation of himself.

Since, as mentioned above, Britt daniels has no children, the unmistakably nirvana-like feel to the song, and the very fact that Cobain's daughter's middle name is bean, i think the song could well be daniels singing in the shoes of cobain, someone whose influence on the band is well acknowledged.

Interestingly, if the song is truely about frances bean, the line "i am your shadow in the dark" serves to predict cobain's suicide and his constant presence as a dark shadow she can never escape as she grows up without him.

General Comment:To me this song is entirely indicative of the human condition.

The title is, after all, "Me and the Bean," which ultimately suggests that the self is defined from something much more than just the brain.

A few lyrics highlight this idea, but as previously stated, "I have your blood inside my heart" is incredibly poignant. The singer is crying out to his rational mind [brain, bean, whatever], "can't you understand my heart's blood [my emotion, my 'soul'] is the very same blood that flows through you?" With this central theme in mind, some more of the verse becomes clear.

An amazingly angsty song about the battle between reasons and emotions. Beautiful.
