Sitting still as stone
Watching, watching

People walkin' by me, wondering why
No one ever stops to talk or thinks about if
They ever did

What if God shuffled by
One day, we might see
Of doing not a thing
Breathing just to breathe
We might find some reason

But rushing around seems what's wrong with the world
Don't lose the dreams inside your head
They'll only be there 'til you're dead
Dream

Lying on the roof, counting
The suns that fill the sky
I wonder is
Someone in the heavens looking back down on me
I'll never know

So much space to believe
Funny, when you're small
The moon follows the car
There's no one but you see
Hey, the moon is chasing me

I worried if I looked away, she'd be gone
Don't lose the dreams inside your head
They'll only be there 'til you're dead
Dream

Walking through the wood
No cares in the world
The world she's come to play
She's all mine, just for a day

And there's not a moment to lose in the game
Don't let the troubles in your head
Steal too much time, you'll soon be dead
So play

Oh, fall down
It won't be so long now
Out of the darkness comes light
Like a flash
You think you can, you think you can
Sometimes that is the problem
Dream, little darling
Dream

Spinning on the wind
The leaf fell from the limb
And every day should be a good day to die

Oh, fall down
It won't be too long now
Every fire dies
I find it hard to explain
How i got here
I think I can, I think I can
Then again, I will falter
Dream

Oh, I think I can, I think I can
I think I can, I think I can

Dream, little darling
Dream

Spinning on the wind
The leaf fell from the limb

General Comment:Annnd, I definately think this song has at least two levels. The first is simple. Seize the day! Carpe diem! Don't spend too much time dwelling on "what-ifs." Live with a purpose. Don't just drift through life.

The second level is childhood. This song seems like it's being looked at through a child's eyes. I'm 19, almost 20. I'm sad to say that my generation was probably one of the last to really play outside. It seemed like when I was about 8 or 9, video game madness struck. I was one of the losers with parents who didn't get us every new thing that came out. At the time it frustrated me, but now I'm forever grateful and plan on doing the same thing with my future kids. Outside, I grew imagination. I had adventures, with the scars to prove it. My friends (with similar thinking parents) and I would spend hours on end coming up with games and ideas. Dave is viewing life like a kid. That is, full of wonder and honesty. When you're a kid, the world is big and mysterious and above all, magical. Dave is saying that as adults, we should try and think like a kid. Not jaded and bored, but with curiousity and awe.

General Comment:“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?"

    -Matthew 6:25-34

This song always brings these verses to mind for me :) I know people get annoyed when comments get too Biblical, but I just wanted to share this.

General Comment:This is my favorite DMB song! I believe this part goes:

    Lying on the roof, counting
The stars that fill the sky
    I wonder if
Someone's in the heavens looking back down on me?
    I'll never know

General Comment:This has been one of my favorite songs of all time. The delicate balance of despair and hope in the words as well as in the music itself seems to so closely emulate the contradictory thoughts and emotions that seem to plague everyone.

It starts out with someone sitting and observing people, recognizing the self-imposed isolation so ingrained in people they don't even realize there's another option. With the theme of the song seeming to revolve around death and a search for meaning and/or God, the connection is made that in this condition people wouldn't even recognize the answer if it shuffled by. Yet, we find the person lamenting this is, themselves, doing much the same -- not interacting, just lamenting the sorry state of affairs.

It's interesting to note, too, that it is said Abraham sat counting the suns in the sky the night he died, counting the number of descendants God had promised him. That story seems to sum up the song pretty well in and of itself, with Abraham having been given a dream by God. Yet, for all of his life, he had hope and faith alone that God would do so. God said Abraham's descendants would number the sands on the shore and the stars in the sky. Even though he died having but one son God had promised (and possibly 2 grandchildren by that time), he died dreaming and believing.

The reference to all falling down could hold two meanings, in one being death, but the other being falling into a depravity or darkness. Yet, out of that darkness comes light like a flash, that realization that it can change, or the discovery of what has been missing. We surge forward suddenly, thinking we can break free from the chains of darkness holding us, but sometimes we fail, which can send us spiraling further into that darkness.

The most profound line for me was that every day should be a good day to die, because it's true. You never know what's lying on the other side of 24 hours, so every day should be lived without regrets, taking advantage of every opportunity, knowing it could be your last, yet still hold onto your dreams of tomorrow.

Finally, we have the crux of the issue -- it's hard to explain how we got here. Were we created? If so, by who? We so often think we have the answer. We think we can explain it. Yet, so often we falter in doing so. As the writer of the book of Hebrews in the Bible wrote, faith is believing in what is unseen. Yet, at times that faith may falter for that very reason.

An excellent song, if I do say so myself. As to the everyday should be a good day to die reference to the album Everyday, the song is much older than Busted Stuff. I have a CD someone left in my story shortly after Crash came out of a bootleg concert where this (and The Maker) were played.

Also, I believe the lines, "Oh, fall down" are actually, "All fall down," though I could be wrong. It seems like that would fit better with the topic of the verses they kick off as well.

General Comment:"dreaming" takes place during is a process of shutting down your consious and awakening your subconsious mind. as in day "dreaming".

our problem is that we are lulled to consious sleep and we allow unsuspecting ideas to enter into our subconsious. like prejudices, greed, and potential failures through negative thought. we are robbed of our innocence and positive thought.

we turn into agressive consumers. sugar junkies. reminds you of "too much" and "sugar will"..dont it.

notice daves positve messages in most of his songs.
thats a good thing cause most of us switch off our consious mind while listening and our subconsious takes in the positve messages...

daves smarter than we give him credit for.
he effects us via positive subliminal messages while were day dreaming.

heres something special..The mind of Christ is our subconsious. we never know who we are until we investigate whats happening to us and how...

when dave says my "head wont leave my head alone"...he's arguing with himself..in his mind.
between his consious and his subconsious.

General Comment:This song seems to be from the standpoint of a child, what with "The moon is chasing me," and "so, play." It's also very dreamlike, as you wouldn't notice a leaf falling from a limb unless you were dreaming. Dreaming enhanses your senses, even though you're not actually using them while dreaming.
