I'll come down to get you high
Or maybe sing you a lullaby
Sing you to sleep, a sleep you'll never wake from
Sing you to coma so to speak

When I fall down I'll fall apart
Trade in my bike for a shopping cart
And beg change from a world that needs some
Like I need someone
So where are you my little needle?
The stack's been burned away
But I'm so inebriated that I cannot see
Three feet in front of me
Between the moon and you, lunacy is setting in

Lately I've been feeling dead inside
Like my guts have dried up and died
But every night I water them back to life
Yeah every night I water them back to life

When I fall down I'll fall apart
Trade in my bike for a shopping cart
And beg change from a world that needs some
I'm tired of sleeping alone
So where are you my little needle?
The stack's been burned away
But I'm so inebriated that I cannot see
Three feet in front of me
Between the moon and you, lunacy is setting in

General Comment:99% of alkaline trio songs are about girls, drugs/booze, or both. so 1) anyone dismissing either outright is deluding themselves. 2) as metaphors go, there are concrete, stated meanings and implied meanings. in this song, HEROIN is the CONCRETE topic. the numerous references to the drug (coma, stack, needle, water, dead inside, inebriated, high, etc) are clearly spelled out and have been explained by others' posts. this is not alkaline trio's only song about the drug, and the abuse history is documented.
    3) IF (all caps IF) there is an implied meaning, that is, that something besides the insight to kick a bad drug habit is the "needle in the haystack" i really have to doubt it's a girl. for one thing, he addresses "it" as you (which is to say, he's speaks as if he's familiar with it/her, which would not be the case with seeking one's "soulmate") and then calls it/her insane (lunacy; great line) which is not exactly love song material. nor is the general negative tone of the song or using a brutal drug habit as a metaphor for a girl you are supposedly dying to meet.
i'll say it's possible. there are admittedly some pretty dark songs about girls in the alkaline trio catalog, but they're typically not as good with the extended metaphors as they are with clever wordplay (moon/lunacy and needle/stack are both pretty terrific here). it's unquestionably about heroin though.

General Comment:So where are you my little needle?
The stack's been burned away but I'm so inebriated that I cannot see
three feet in front of me
Between the moon and you, lunacy is setting in

This is probably my favorite refrain from any Trio song. I know the heroin path is tempting but im going to try to go the other route.

So where are you my little needle?
Looking for someone who is perfect for him and understands him

The stacks been burned away but I'm so inebriated that I cannot see three feet in front of me
Shes right in front of him but he cant realize it because he is so drunk from his sadness for not being able to find her

Between the moon and you, lunacy is setting in
Probably one of the best double meanings out there.
Lunacy is a term meaning mental illness, stemming from the prefix Luna. A term leftover from ancient times when the moon was thought to cause insanity and mental problems.
He feels so far away from her that he is going crazy.

General Comment:Guys i wanna end this debate right now. I def thought it was about heroin until i watched the goddammit dvd. Check out the bonus shit where Skiba and Dan explain each song. And I quote from Skiba "Its about finding a needle in a haystack" So all you heroin users im sorry but thats the true meaning of it.

General Comment:im not sure how many of you on here have actually done/are addicted to heroin or know someone who is addicted to heroin, but i think this song describes it perfectly. i understand the link that some are trying to create between the lyrics and losing a girl, or never finding her, but that is why we listen to songs to figure out their meaning. theyre like poems, everyone has their own interpretation.

    now for mine:

"When I fall down I'll fall apart"
--anyone addicted to heroin doesnt just do it when they want, they "fall apart" and cave to the addiction.

"and beg change from a world that needs some like I need someone
So where are you my little needle?
The stack's been burned away but I'm so inebriated that I cannot see
three feet in front of me
Between the moon and you, lunacy is setting in"
--anyone whos addicted to h is addicted for a reason. those who choose opiates [narcotic painkillers] are in pain, usually not physical, however its just as damaging. he is "begging change" probably from himself, and those around him. his addiction has pulled him so far that he is alone, other than his "little needle". the lunacy is his battle with the addiction. it puts him in a state of relaxation and ease, however, when sober hes even worse than before, creating a giant cycle. also "not being able to see three feet in front of him" just adds to him being high. a heroin high is pretty much just nodding off. in the short time before that, to say that youre sedated is an understatement.

"Lately I've been feeling dead inside
Like my guts have dried up and died
But every night I water them back to life
yeah every night I water them back to life"
--again, heroin addicts for the most part are "dead inside". before i get bitched out for this statement, tell me any heroin addicts you know who do h just because. his "guts have dried up and died", there is nothing else to do but shoot up. he is "watering them back to life" by shooting up or drinking, regardless hed rather feel no pain at all than have to deal with the reality of it all.

in addition, his voice almost sounds like hes done with everything. that can go any way, but i am convinced its about heroin.

General Comment:After reading what everyones wrote.
I will say it's not about a girl, i acn see why you think that, but with ALK3 everythigns not as clear as you first think..!!
Reason why its about drugs is becasue, he was addicted to drugs...

And this line "The stack's been burned away but I'm so inebriated that I cannot see
three feet in front of me" isn't about not seeing the Girl in front but, when you turn Herion into Liqud form to inject you Burn it in a spoon, so the powder Heroin "The stack" is heated to trun in to liqud and then it's injected.
So technically the stack of powdered heroin which he's used a falme (lighter or candle) has burned the stack away).

And the "trade in my bike for a shopping cart" i think thats to do with, him being a biker corrier (delivers packages) and most homeless people have the shopping carts with all their posessions in..

and also the part "Lately I've been feeling dead inside Like my guts have dried up and died But every night I water them back to life yeah every night I water them back to life"

I'd say is abuot alcohol, mainly becasue a lot of there songs deal with Alcohol abuse or to escape reality with it...just look at...Cooking wine, My friend peter as examples..(also many more)

But this is just my opinion...
Take from it what you'd like^__^

General Comment:ok i have really thought about this and it is definitely a girl because they were never into hard drugs and they always sing about girls and always use metaphors.

General Comment: it could be the needle in the haystack thing.they use metaphors a lot. but i think the trio means to do that they want you to really think about it and make the songs personal to everyone so it could be a love song or a drug song or however you think of it. it is whatever you see it as
