Lyrics for Demolition Lovers as interpreted by a scar in the sky

Demolition Lovers Lyrics
Hand in mine, into your icy blues
And then I'd say to you we could take to the highway
With this trunk of ammunition too
I'd end my days with you in a hail of bullets

I'm trying, I'm trying
To let you know just how much you mean to me
And after all the the things we put each other through and

I would drive on to the end with you
A liquor store or two keeps the gas tank full
And I feel like there's nothing left to do
But prove myself to you and we'll keep it running

But this time, I mean it
I'll let you know just how much you mean to me
As snow falls on desert sky
Until the end of everything
I'm trying, I'm trying
To let you know how much you mean
As days fade, and nights grow
And we go cold

Until the end, until this blood
Until this, I mean this, I mean this
Until the end of...

I'm trying, I'm trying
To let you know how much you mean
As days fade, and nights grow
And we go cold

But this time, we'll show them
We'll show them all how much we mean
As snow falls on desert sky
Until the end of every...

All we are, all we are
Is bullets I mean this

As lead rains, will pass on through our phantoms

Forever, forever
Like scarecrows that fuel this flame we're burning
Forever, and ever
Know how much I want to show you you're the only one
Like a bed of roses there's a dozen reasons in this gun

And as we're falling down, and in this pool of blood
And as we're touching hands, and as we're falling down
And in this pool of blood, and as we're falling down
I'll see your eyes, and in this pool of blood
I'll meet your eyes, I mean this forever

Am I the only one who thinks this may be the most romantic song ever?

Man I'd love to go out like this.

Just me, the girl I love, an open road of possibilities...

and a hail of bullets.

Obviously, on the surface this song is about loving someone to death but the background to this track is a story that Gerard has conceived about two characters, he and his partner. They are both killed but he ends up in purgatory and the only way that he can get to her is if he kills 1000 evil men. This is the story of how they died. Part of "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge" follows up the song, and also part of the "Demolition Lovers" epic is the song "Drowning Lessons" as it touched upon "1,000 bodies piled up". But of course, there are imagery ties to "Natural Born Killers." Also it's about how Gerard would die for the one he loves. In the inlay of the album it says "To K: I'm sorry I write all these songs about killing you, I hope the last track makes up for it." The last track is "Demolition Lovers." "I'd end my days with you in a hail of bullets."

I love this song, it is sang with such emotion. And like most of you have said I think that it is about loving somebody so much that you'd die for them(including that other person dying too). I love the middle. The drums and the guitar pieces are absolutely awesome. I love it. MCR for life!

This is definitely one of my favorite MCR songs. It brings such vivid scenes to life in my mind. The way I see it, it's sort of like Romeo and Juliet, but with a twist. These two lovers run off to Vegas to get married (that's why this takes place in a desert) because their families are against the relationship. They plan to kill themselves together to "show them all how much we mean". As in they're gonna show their families how much they mean to eachother by committing suicide in the name of their love.

With this overview set up, I'll go verse by verse.

"Hand in mine, into your icy blues
And then I'd say to you we could take to the highway
With this trunk of ammunition too
I'd end my days with you in a hail of bullets"

This could be the guy explaining the plan to the girl. He takes her hand in his, looks into her eyes, and recites his ideas. (Note that the music is creating a sensation of suspense. The slow lingering strokes of the guitar and the drums building, then dying out quickly again, make me suspect something big. Also, Gerard's vocal sound distant, as though these lyrics are a memory.)

"I would drive on to the end with you
A liquor store or two keeps the gas tank full
And I feel like there's nothing left to do
But prove myself to you and we'll keep it running"

So now they're driving out to the desert. Stopping every once in a while for booze. If they're really gonna do this then they might need some convincing (a.k.a. alcohol). The man feels that life is pointless unless he can prove his love for her.

"But this time, I mean it
I'll let you know just how much you mean to me
As snow falls on desert sky"

This has a double meaning for me. As I said before they will show they're families how much they mean to each other, as much as snow falling in the desert is rare and spectacular, so is their love. Or the line "as snow falls on desert sky" may also describe nighttime. The "snow" reffered to could actually be stars. Since stars stand out best in deserts, they would be littering the sky like snowfall.

"I'm trying, I'm trying
To let you know how much you mean
As days fade, and nights grow
And we go cold"

I think that this means he's been trying to show her how important she is to him, but he's failed up until now. The days were fading, the lovers were missing their opportunities to truly love one another, away from the eyes of their dissapproving families. They were growing cold to each other, forgetting their passion, until the man concieved this plan of dual suicide. (Note that the music has finally reached a crescendo)

"All we are, all we are
Is bullets I mean this"

I feel as though this part of the song is an interjection by Gerard, an interlude. Since he's stated in many interviews that he and the band are opposed to suicide, these lines are warning against this sort of behavior. He's saying not to get too caught up in your love for someone else, since every one's a bullet, capable of killing. Whether they're killing you in love or in hate, the point is they're killing you. Your love for yourself, your life, must come first. This is not selfish. (Note that the song has returned to slow, deliberate strokes.)

"As lead rains, will pass on through our phantoms
Forever, forever"

Now we cut away from Gerard and are back to the story of the two lovers. The lead rain, of course, refers to bullets. The phantoms, I see as their fears, their inhibitions, their enemies. So the song is saying that as the bullets pass through their flesh, they also pass through the things that make them human, alive, inadaquate. That in death they will be perfect together, without fear and hate, they will only have their love. (Note the song is back to loud, quick strokes.)

"Like scarecrows that fuel this flame we're burning
Forever, and ever"

Another double meaning, I think the scarecrows refer to their families again. They are fueling this fire that's causing them to prefer death together over life apart. Or the scarecrows could be the lovers themselves, ignited with love and passion.

"Know how much I want to show you you're the only one
Like a bed of roses there's a dozen reasons in this gun"

These lines sum up the whole emotion of the song. LOVE in DEMOLITION. ROMANCE in DEMOLITION. Comparing a bed of roses to a gun is the kind of thing that makes MCR the band we all love. It's dark and terrifying and romantic and poetic all at once. Much like Romeo and Juliet. A man gives a woman he loves roses to show his undying devotion. Roses aren't enough for the Demolition Lovers, who want to escape everything but their love for one another. They must make a choice between life and love, because these are separate options.

"And as we're falling down,"

Probably describing the strange sensation of knowing you are going to die. Of holding a gun in your hand before pressing it to your head and pulling the trigger. It must be an unreal sensation of falling a long distance. (Note the song is now very rhythmic, like the quick beating of a heart, or an adrenaline fueled pulse.)

"and in this pool of blood"

Obviously describing the pool of blood they will die in together.

"And as we're touching hands, and as we're falling down
And in this pool of blood, and as we're falling down"

"Touching hands". I picture the man in the driver seat of the car (as he planned this whole affair), and the woman in the passenger seat (as she is along for the ride, but not at all in control, possibly she is having second thoughts). The car is parked along the shoulder of the desert highway. Each has a gun in their hand, pressed ready against a temple. Their hands are touching, ensuring that they will travel the afterlife together. They're "falling down", experiencing the adreneline rush that comes with knowing the end is near, and thinking about the "pool of blood" their lifeless bodies will drown in once they've crossed over the other side together. (Note also that the pace of the guitars and drums speeds up, and that Gerard's voice sounds pained and constricted. Like he's suffocating with the wieght of this decision.)

"I'll see your eyes, and in this pool of blood
I'll meet your eyes, I mean this forever"

The man looks into the eyes of his lover. Hers don't meet his. She is thinking of the pool of blood and she is hesitant. She looks up and their eyes lock. I think he actually speaks "I mean this forever".

The genious of this song, I believe, is that it ends abrubtly. Like a life. Right here. After he's spoken his last words of devotion. After this great crescendo of sound. And I am left thinking that he surely pulled the trigger, but wondering whether or not his lover did. The reason I question the woman's devotion is because the song is angry. Gerard screams the words, as though the woman broke her promise. He yells "I'm trying, I'm trying to let you know how much you mean" as though the man is frustrated at her. This whole story seems like it is being told after the events that occur in it. Perhaps the man is looking back on the life he wasted, narrating his downfall. This woman, who betrayed him, was his bullet, his femme fatale, his reason for suicide, the only justification for his death. This could also mean that the segment of the song which I deemed as Gerard's interlude may, in fact, be the man interrupting his own story, and warning the listener against making the same error. The quick shift in tone and pace that the song makes suggests regret. That the now-dead lover grows impassioned with his storytelling (the loud crescendo of sound) , before realizing suddenly his great mistake (his realization would be symobolized by the slow, winding strokes of the guitar, followed, then, by Gerard's vocals, which personify his anguished cries of resentment toward himself). He let his love for this woman cloud his judgement, and push everything else out of him. He forgot his true mortality, and the possibility of her fatality.

However, because the song ends abrubtly, it's really a cliffhanger. One of those movies that ends right when it shouldn't. All options are left open, and it's up to the person listening to decide the fate of the characters.

Sorry this was so long! I feel like I just wrote a college thesis. I really didn't mean to write so much, it's just that I've been waiting to get my thoughts about this song down on something, and know I finally had my opportunity! If you read, thanks for reading! I hope you agree with something of it.

i recently saw natural born killers. I had to stop the movie when they were in the desert. So perfectly described. When they're both fighting about how he killed the indian. This movie is inspirating and worth making a song as good as this one for.

The ultimate 'death do us part' song. He loves this girl so much he'd die for her, and his only wish is to die, looking into her eyes and telling her how much she means to him.
Beautiful.
Though, admittedly, far-fetched. I prefer Kyo's writing (Dir en grey) because he just writes down the raw feelings and doesn't dress them up as movies. This one's a lot like Ain't afraid to Die, maybe the girl is already dead? So he ants to be with her, and is his last moments he sees her face, as if her spiret's greeting him.

Love this song. Kinda reminds of 'Join Me' by HIM. About two lovers that love eachother so much that they would kill themselves so they could be together for eternity. Or maybe she pulled out at the last second so she was the reason he died (explaining the 'all we are is bullets' part) That we are the reason people die/commit suicide
I bought 'Bullets' the other day and this is defenatly one of my favourite songs!
Speaking bitterness: Your explanation was fantastic and really made me think about the meaning of this song again.
