Let's admire the pattern forming.
Murderous filigree.
I'm caught in the twisting of the vine.
Go ascend with ivy,climbing.
Ignore and leave for me the headstone crumbling behind.
I can't help my laughter as she cries.
My soul brings tears to angelic eyes.
Let's amend the classic story, close it so beautifully,
I'll let animosity unwind.
Steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefully.
I'll still feel the violence of the lines.
I can't stand my laughter as they cry.
My soul brings tears to angelic eyes.
And miles away my mother cries.
Omnipotence, nurturing malevolence.

Let's amend the classic story, close it so beautifully,
Steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefully.
I'll still feel the violence of the lines.

its about the story, pages and lines of the bible.

I can't stand my laughter as they cry. - i think he is laughing at religious people as they weep and wail for jesus.

even thorugh his new songs you can see the views he has on relgion. eg. "dont tell them you can walk on water or they will drink your blood.

General Comment:Well, the ivy and the vine were considered spirits in ancient times, and enemies. okay like, ivy, it can climb and flourish under any conditions, crawl up the biggest tree and become powerful that way, but it always needs a host to suck the life force out of and such. the ivy was thought to represent the path to soul and self. . If the Vine would allow you to foretell events, then the Ivy was a way to be in touch with inner resources, with the ability to see through the eyes of the soul, extremely stubborn, just as the vine, and loyal. its really easy, apparently, to become addicted to the vine's intoxicating nature. the person of a vine looks like a cool and detached individual but can be vulnerable and self critical.
at the begininng, "let's admire the pattern forming, murderous filigree." it is ironic, the filigree representing the ornate and intricate patterns that are involving himself, and maybe someone else. the pattern is killing him on the inside, everything becoming too complicated and painful 'murderous'. he says admire, because it leaves him in awe at everything that has happened. He himself is the vine becoming detached but still cares on the inside, and whoever else is the ivy. maybe they are not enemies, but are choosing different paths, the writer choosing the vine, whose nature is sensual and bipolar, darker side and the ivy is a more a spiritual path to self and mind. She ascends with ivy; he is caught in vine, just going around in circles. however, the ivy is still loyal to him, and he tells the ivy to ignore him because he cant be saved. He is probably making the ivy feel hurt and betrayed because they might still care for each other but are becoming different. He doesn't show it, just acts cool as if he doesnt care. . the headstone marks the end of something, left behind in memory and crumbling, because it died long ago, maybe a relationship which has been over.
"I can't help my laughter as she cries, my soul brings tears to angelic eyes."
He laughs at the ivy maybe because theres no poin in feeling bad b/c either him or the relationship cant be saved.. Maybe he laughs to protect himself from showing feelings. His soul brings tears; just by being himself, everything he does and his own being makes her sad, angelic eyes, pure and innocent eyes that see him purely and innocently, hurt by the writer. She sees the good in him, his soul all of him. he might think its wrong to do this to her but doesn't care, yet wishes he did.
"Let's amend the classic story close it so beautifully. I'll let animosity unwind."
The classic story is their history. He wants to fix it, or reopen it and give them closure, or a beautiful ending, but an ending. The animosity he feels is just anger at her or the problems, or anything that happened that has still left him hurt. Maybe it is she who has hurt him and he still cares in a way for her and even though wants her is still feeling bad feelings towards her.
"Steal away the darkened pages, Hidden so shamefully. I'll still feel the violence of the lines."
the bad part of the relationship. Maybe he is angry (unwound animosity) and is trying to change their story by bringing up the darkened pages, the time when it all went bad, all the things that were hidden with shame and sadness. but no matter if they are taken away, stolen away by anything, he'll still feel the destruction that it has caused him, the intense feelings of the past that has led him to the point of melancholy.
"I can't stand my laughter as they cry. My soul brings tears to angelic eyes."
The laughter is now inseparable from him, he has no control over his self defense mechanism and the people that care about him cry, and though he acts like he doesnt care, he still hates himself for it. The path that he has chosen has sunken him lower, and he cant protect himself from it.
"And miles away my mother cries. Omnipotence nurturing malevolence."
He has left home, and that which has created the new person is a sad memory now. Everyone that has created the new person is a beautiful and sad memory. The power that he gets through his deeds, through not having or showing emotion has taken a turn and forms evil, and he has become evil.

General Comment:I always thought it was about the bible...

"Steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefully, I still feel the violence of the lines"

The pages of the bible... you know.. certain verses are dark? And the bible is VERY violent at times? Maybe he was trying to hint at that?

"Let's amend the classic story, close it so beautifully. I'll let animosity unwind."

Let's rewrite the bible... put an end to all the hatered people have for people of other religions?

General Comment:Davey is a very dark figure indeed.
His songs tell one big story that very few know.
I was told by a fan that Indeed used to hang out with Havok and AFI back in the day about this story, but he doesn't want ANYONE to know. So he keeps it to himself and uses it in his writing.
I guess its something about how evil the world was to him or is to him, who knows, EVEN the new stuff he writes reflects the older AFI, I really want to know this story.

General Comment:i think that this song is about life and how it is horrific and how we are unable to make it good or worthwhile
"lets admire the pattern forming murderous filagree"
muredering for our own profit for possesion, power
    etc
"in caught in the twisting of the vine"
im caught in the middle of this
so to be caught in the middle
    "go accend with ivy climbing"
ok fuck this just go mix up and become part of this horrible reality
"ignore and leave for me the headstone crumbleing behind"
    a headstone is a gravestone
the stone placed on the grave represents the memory of that person
when it crumbles the person is forgotten
so ignore the dead great people and leave their memories to be kept with me
"i cant help my laughter as she cries"
although he is some devine perfect soul, he gets a sickening uncontrolably pleasure from others pain and he loathes this
he hates the evil of himself
"my soul brings tears to angelic eyes"
even though he is divine, his one and only flaw brings pain to even the most angelic being who cannot overlook it
"Let's amend the classic story, close it so beautifully,
    I'll let animosity unwind."
    animosity is a strong dislike/hatred
so he is beggining to bcome more evil and more with the world
his godlyness is being reduced to the rest of the bastards like us
so he lets his hatred take over
"Steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefully."
then he tries to cover up everything
    make us look perfect
    disguise our flaws
    what makes us human
"I'll still feel the violence of the lines."
    even thought he tried to
he is unable to hide away the 'darkened pages'
the violence int he lines is the violence in out story
because life is like a book
"I can't stand my laughter as they cry."
once again as before when it was 'she' now its they
"My soul brings tears to angelic eyes."
once again its the same as above
"And miles away my mother cries."
she cries for what hes become
    "Omnipotence, nurturing malevolence."
    omnipotence is unlimited power
malevlence is wishing evil to others
so he is a divine being who now wishes for evil
ok thats my oppinion feel free to disagree
im only a naieve 12 year old of course

General Comment:I agree with afi23, I think it's anti-religious, which other AFI songs also appears to be.
"I can't help my laughter as she cries. "
It could be "his" (the person the song is about(possibly Davey)) mother who cries because he's not religious anymore. That's the first thing I thought about.
