What's going on?
Could this be my understanding
It's not your fault, I was being too demanding
I must admit it's my pride that made me distant
All because I hoped that you'd be someone different

There's not much to know about you
Fear will always make you blind
But the answer is in clear view
It's amazing what you'll find face to face

I turned away 'cause I thought you were the problem
Tried to forget until I hit the bottom
But when I faced you in my blank confusion
I had to see it was just a mere illusion

It really didn't make sense
Just to leave this unresolved
It's not hard to go the distance
When you finally get involved face to face

(Repeat above)

    My Interpretation:In my interpretation,

I know exactly what this song means. And... to be honest, not a lot of songs can have that connection to me. Basically, I can have some connections, and understandings of songs, but no song has ever struck such a chord with its lyrics, hit so deep, as this song.

No one word or sentence can describe the song.

But to show you my interpretation, I must first give you my story.

A few years ago, I met the love of my life on the bus. I got to know her, talked to her, and then, as what was the most popular way to connect with people back then, and even now, I added her on Facebook. We'd talk a lot. But one day, she stopped responding. I was in surprise, I was desperate to keep her, desperate to get a chance. Mind you, this was the girl of my dreams, just a perfect being in my mind. She was Katrina. And she meant everything to me. So, I responded back, tried to get her attention, however, my attempts to talk to her through our most common form of communication, Facebook, was unsuccessful. She would not respond, despite her seeing my messages. After three or four messages I sent with her not responding, she unfriended me. I had other girls in my life, ones that liked me back, and ones that rejected me, there were other girls in my life. But none like Katrina. She was a goddess to me. When I heard this song, I immediately related, because I learned one thing. The only way I would be able to confront her, was in person. Looking her in the eye and asking her why she hid from me would be the only way I'd figure out. To this day I still don't fully understand why she did what she did, and I can't easily summarize what happened in this comment. But it was much more deep and complex.

    1* "What's going on ?
    Could this be my understanding
It's not your fault I was being too demanding"
This Relates to my surprise and attempt to gather what had happened.

2* "I must admit it's my pride that made me distant
All because I hoped that you'd be someone different"
This relates to my idea that I still had the chance, that she was still the one. That she'd be the girl.

3* "There's not much I know about you
Fear will always make you blind"
I never knew much about Katrina, she would hide these things, sadly from us never having much of a connection.

4* "But the answer is in clear view
It's amazing what you'll find face to face"
The only way I'd talk to her... is face to face.

5* "I turned away because I thought you were the problem
Tried to forget until I hit the bottom"
After rejection, I looked away, I felt that it wasn't true that I had done wrong. That it was impossible. She was to be at fault. But the pain of heartbreak was unbearable.

6* "But when I faced you in my blank confusion
I realized you weren't wrong, it was a mere illusion"
When I finally confronted Katrina, I realized, she was never wrong. I was at fault. I was too demanding, too pushy, I wanted love. She wanted friendship. And because I went too far, I lost everything. I lost Katrina.

7* "It really didn't make sense
    Just to leave this unresolved
It's not hard to go the distance
when you finally get involved face to face"
During that unbearable pain of trying to forget, it didn't at all make sense for me to leave this 'unresolved'. But it was never too hard to reach a conclusion, all I had to do was get involved 'face to face'.

Nevertheless, that is my story. I lost the girl of my dreams, and no matter how many women I have met and dated. No one will ever compare to Katrina. She was everything to me. And to this day, my heart remains in pain. But at least now I know the conclusion, the reason, what I did wrong, the answer. And I found it face to face.

My Interpretation:My idea is that the song's about how lots of people meet each other and get to know each other over the internet, often in chatrooms (that's how I interpret the little voice clip, which always sounded to me like "Mr. Footlong." As in, Mr. Footlong, that dude in the chatroom trying to advertise his dick.)

"When you finally meet face to face," the person isn't what you expected/things are awkward ("I must admit, it's my pride that made me distant/All because I hoped that you'd be someone different.")

When I was in middle school I had a few relationships that developed over facebook and AIM rather than in person, so a lot of the lyrics relate to that in my interpretation. "There's not much to know about you," -you can only learn so much about someone from chatting/texting with them.

"I turned away 'cause I thought you were the problem/Tried to forget until I hit the bottom." - You get to know someone on the internet, and sometimes it feels like that's the only way you CAN get to know them. "But when I faced you in my blank confusion/I had to see it was just a mere illusion." When drama happens, it finally becomes clear how shallow those relationships/friendships are.

"It's not hard to go the distance." -Face to face communication isn't hard, and in fact it's much, much better.

"It's amazing what you'll find face to face."

My Opinion:It's obvious that the speaker is addressing someone in particular here. I suppose most people will say it is a girl, a lover, a would-be lover, etc. However, that explaination doesn't fit as well as I'd like. I think a better fit is a deity.

So, yeah, I think this song is about a guy finding God.

"I must admit it's my pride that made me distant
All because I hoped that you'd be someone different"
People may have their own ideas of what/who G/god(s) may be like. And let's be honest, prideful people have a harder time worshipping something, no?

"There's not much to know about you"
But we still admit we don't really know, because, how can we?

"I turned away 'cause I thought you were the problem
Tried to forget until I hit the bottom"
Many times, people will become religious after they hit a tough spot in their life

And of course, the song is about getting up close and personal, face to face, with who/whatever the speaker is addressing. It's clear to me that it is a deity.

My Opinion:I think now a days this song can be applied almost perfectly to the whole social-networking/facebook fad (hopefully it's just a fad). As lame is it sounds, I know so many people, guys and girls, that are interested in someone but see something on their myspace/twitter/facebook and are instantly turned off by them. I think the lyric: "All because I hoped that you'd be someone different" perfectly describes that.

"There's not much I know about you, fear will always make you blind" is a great lyric as well I think Daft Punk is trying to tell us that we need to stop judging people over the internet because "it's amazing what you'll find face to face"...No matter how good an online relationship/friendship can be it'll never be as good as a relationship that is face to face or in person.

I don't know why you are trying to say the Beatles suck in this forum but, I hate to break it to you, they don't. The Beatles do drugs?? So What! So do most musicians electronic artist, rock stars, hip hop stars, pop stars, etc.

Also, relephora, I completely disagree with you 100%. Yes, the Beatles do have poetic lyrics but so does any artist that has very good lyrics because they are almost the same thing. These are amazing lyrics and I think Daft Punk's are often shadowed by their amazing live shows and electronic dance music because no one really listens to the "deeper" meaning into a song when they are at a live show with flashing lights everywhere.

Daft Punk > Beatles? Come on, why can't we appreciate both? I'm sure they both appreciate eachother.

General Comment:The cut-up female voice is saying:

    'It's the 3rd law'

    Why? Because -

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

Haha, I realised this in science class YEARS ago. I listened to Discovery all the time and tried to work out what she was saying....and then my science teacher taught us Newton's 3rd law and suddenly it clicked. A revelation :)

''To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction: or the forces of two bodies on each other are always equal and are directed in opposite directions''.

My Interpretation:I found one source about the woman's lyrics in the background

    "You're gone~
    You're stuck now
    You're stuck-

    You're gone~
    You're stuck now
    Take it easy"

I believe this makes sense according to the song's context. Although i have a hard time believing I hear "stuck". I swear to hear "alone" and "To feel".

    General Comment:i love this song
Discovery was the first CD i ever had ^^
i'll never grow tired of it
this is probably my favorite song
and i believe it talks about the fear of going into a relationship or into something serious with a person
the singer says that his pride made him distant
maybe he is afraid to commit
there's things about the other person that he dislikes a lot and that he doubts a lot
maybe rumors he's heard of them
and they're growing apart because of that
but he realizes that the only thing he can really do to make the situation better is to confront this person to find out the real, actual truth; otherwise, they might both get caught up in just more lies and rumors and stuff like that
i think it's something like that
i must say i'm going through something similar and that gave me the chance to think on this song a little mor deeply
    DAFT PUNK FTW!
