Lyrics for Simon as interpreted by dsfire

Simon Lyrics
Catch your breath
Hit the wall
Scream out loud
As you start to crawl
Back in your cage
The only place where
They will leave you alone

'Cause the weak will seek the weaker
Until they've broken them
Could you get it back again
Would it be the same

Fulfillment to their lack of strength
At your expense
Left you with no defense
They tore it down

And I have felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same

Locked inside the only place
Where you feel sheltered
Where you feel safe
You lost yourself
In your search to find
Something else to hide behind

The fearful always preyed upon your confidence
Did they see the consequence
When they pushed you around
The arrogant build kingdoms
Made of the different ones
Breaking them 'til they've become
Just another crown

And I have felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same

Refuse to feel, anything at all
Refuse to slip, refuse to fall
Can't be weak, can't stand still
You watch your back, 'cause no one will

You don't know why
They had to go this far
Traded your worth for these scars
For your only company
Don't believe the lies that they told to you
Not one word was true
You're alright, you're alright,
You're alright

And I have felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same

As you, I've felt the same

Yeah, that's the uniqueness of this song. Almost anyone can sing it with absolute truth in their lives. Whether it be Jesus, me, you, your bully, an old man, or a middle school kid, it just seems to fit into every one's lives.

i think this song is about bullying to be honest. i think jason said once that it was about a guy he went to school with who got bullied and jason saw the guys demise i guess. this song is so beautiful live.

"Catch your breath
Hit the wall
Scream out loud
As you start to crawl
Back in your cage
The only place where
They will leave you alone "

<--- People reacting to what theyve been told or if people are being nasty, its how they are feeling, it feels like they are being physically hurt..

"'Cause the weak will seek the weaker
till they've broken them
Could you get it back again
Would it be the same "

Thats what bullies and just people in general do, they prey on the ones weaker than them to make themselves feel good.

"
Fulfillment to their lack of strength
At your expense
Left you with no defense
They tore it down "

again it makes them feel good, fulfills them, because they are also weak and have no strength.

"And I have felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same "

He's been through the same thing, lots of people have.. Jason was a target of bullying kind of when they lived in

"Locked inside the only place
Where you feel sheltered
Where you feel safe
You lost yourself
In your search to find
Something else to hide behind "

You hide yoursel away from everything to try and make yourself feel better so you dont keep on getting hurt.. you create your own little world.

"The fearful always preyed upon your confidence
Did they see the consequence
When they pushed you around
The arrogant build kingdoms
Made of the different ones
Breaking them 'til they've become
Just another crown "

The people that do it are scared, they are afraid, fearful.
They didnt think wbout what might happen if they treat you like that do ( people in general im on about)
The arrogent people group together they try and become the same, the different ones, but they are really just the same, breaking the people who go with them, they do just the same as the other and it starts all over again.

"Refuse to feel, anything at all
Refuse to slip, refuse to fall
Can't be weak, can't stand still
You watch your back, 'cause no one will"

Don't give in to them, dont become like them, just dont let them get to you, your a better person than they are. Look out for yoursel, stand up for yourself coz if you don do it no one else will.

" You don't know why
They had to go this far
Traded your worth for these scars
For your only company
Don't believe the lies that they told to you
Not one word was true
You're alright, you're alright,
You're alright "

You dont know why theyre doing, hell probarbly they dont even know. They are all alone, they do it to make themselves feel good, ( "for their only company") Dont listen to them if they slg you off or tell you that your crap or rubbish, because none of its true... ur alright, ur alright ( the repetition is like he is reassuring them)

This is what it means to me..... its about PEOPLE IN GENERAL most people are like that, maybe me sometimes, but this song has made me think and try not to be like that if i am

It is such a great song. It's about people trying to put others down. It's an inspirational song, saying people make fun of others because they feel self conscious about themselves. It's a very well-written song.

First off, those of you who keep arguing about what this song's about and putting each other down are doing exactly what the aggressors did to the speaker in the song. Whether or not the song is about Simon in the Bible or Jason's friend is really not a huge issue. The song is amazing regardless. But I'm pretty sure that all of you are right. Jason wrote the song about his friend after speaking to him, and then entitled the song "Simon" because he was comparing his friend's situation to that of Simon in the bible.

this is my all time favourite lifehouse song. it doesn't really matter what way you look at it, it should be open to interpretation, and that way you can get what you want out of it. so appreciate the song for what it is and stop arguing!

This song is one of my favorite Lifehouse songs, in fact one of my favorite songs, period. Of course, everyone has mentioned that he had a friend named Simon, and it's probably about him. You also can't deny that it has pretty significant references to the biblical figure, and given Lifehouse's Christian themes, it shouldn't be at all surprising. Also not surprising is the fact that it could easily be both- symbolism, allusion, and comparison. That's just called good songwriting. Something they're so good at.

I really liked Mixiblob's interpretation of this song. I fully feel that that interpretation is relevant in the kind of world that we live in today. The world is so caught up in selfishness, self-centeredness, and arrogance that they do anything and everything for them and only them - - even if it means damaging people around. There are so many factors in our world today that come up against us and try to damage our lives and this song highlights (very well)
just one of the damaging factors. Whatever the song is talking about whether it be "Simon" his friend or Simon from the Bible, the song's ability to be relevant to us today shines through. I am a Christian myself, and I personally thought the whole theory about the song being about Simon from the Bible was a bit far-fetched. mmm . . .Nobody will really know exactly what the song is about, unless you can personally ask Jason himself. Its really hard to tell what goes through the minds of song writes sometimes and I think its awesome that som many people can express their views and perspectives of so many songs. Whatever the background of the song may be, it is still quite an uplifting and inspirational song and its good nature will apply to most of the people who listen to it.
Thanks for listening to me yall!
Seeya later.

I love to hear the stories behind the songs that these bands write, but just because EVEN THE BAND says this song is about a specific thing, doesn't necessarily negate the symbolic content that might reveal itself to someone else.

However, a song cannot mean ANYTHING. For instance, Lifehouse's 'Hanging By A Moment' doesn't have anything to do with Raging Cannibals in Istanbul. So to say a work of art can mean anything makes it essentially meaningless, doesn't it?

Anyway, my initial thoughts when first hearing this song was about a child who never really felt love. The cage, being the crib, was the only place where the infant felt really safe from the insanity that raged around it. The song seems to be told from a perspective of a loving person who could never really do enough..perhaps an older brother. The brother is imparting the little bit of advice he can, telling his brother to watch his back, because no one else will. Such is the case in abusive families, where the children are forced to become bitter and hardened early on to survive. Surviving from the bullies of the world, whether its on the playground or in the home.

Anyway, thats just my thought. As for the biblical reference..I think thats a bit far-fetched. I mean, the song is called Simon. First of all, Simon was ASHAMED to carry the cross, and feared persecution by the crowd. He was no great man. He didn't help Jesus willingly, the centurions impressed him into their service after Jesus fell the second time on the road to Golgotha. And how has Simon felt the same? We know nothing of Simon's life, surely nothing of persecution or suffering under the pagan rule of the Romans. Jesus and Simon share little in common other than the road to Calvary.

Again, if you MUST tell other people that their interpretations are incorrect, at least back up your own interpretation with better evidence than:

"Duh..it from the bible..dur.."

It detracts from the positive atmosphere of the site, and it makes YOU look like an idiot. If you don't know what the song is about, or you don't have an interpretation, then just read what everyone else has to say and be enlightened. Don't act like a jerk.

I'm not going with the bible theory but I figure that if that's what makes it special to you then stick with it. For me the song is about the whole high school experience. It sums up perfectly the way the so-called in-crowd that believe their social status is gained on how many people they can put down. It also shows how through being picked on you get stronger:

"Refuse to feel anything at all
Refuse to slip, refuse to fall
Can't be weak, can't stand still
Watch your back, 'cos no one will"

This song blows me away. I've listened to it about a million times and every single time play it, it brings tears to my eyes. There are times in my life when i can relate to that song word for word. I remember when i saw them live, and Jason said his motive for writing this song was his friends' life when he was young. And then he said he wrote the whole song in about 15 minutes...AMAZING!!!

okay people.... EVERYTHING IS NOT ALWAYS CHRISTIAN!

thank you

this song, to me, is what the non-christian half of the room is saying. someone named simon going through a hard time. with other people. simon probably has low self esteem. other people probably make fun of him, pick on him, whatever. the singer (aka jason) sees this, takes pity on simon, tells him he knows what it's like.

no bible necessary.

"You lost yourself In your search to find Something else to hide behind" sometimes we feel so lost, hurt, that we dont fit in. And we become the lie we create, just to fit in. we become wot hurt us. And even that hurts. To know that its all a lie, and we try to find what we had.. "Could you get it back again, Would it be the same" What a mess we make of our lives.. We all hide from our insecurities. We hardly share them, and we take it out on others. Making each other feel small. If we would just stop, and realise that we are all imperfect. We are all simon. But we all deal with it differently.
Fear will destroy the most important things in our lives if we let it. As for the overall meaning, i can't be sure. It could be that it was NAMED coz of the simon in the bible, coz jason is religious. And it could also be that it was written for his friend, but that does not mean that the friends name is simon. so yeah, could be both.. He could have wrote it, then realised that it simon would be a perfect title.. anyway, thats just me and my take on things... :P

It reminds me of Simon from Lord of the Flies. His character was a Christ figure in the book, so I can see how it makes people think of the bible. It'd be too easy for it to just be about the bible Simon, though.

I thought it was talking about
Simon from Simon Says, honestly.
Be a Christian and all...wow.
Now did I feel stupid or what.
Anyways, this is my cry yourself...
or pity yourself to sleep song.
Every time I hear it or play it on guitar,
I start thinking about my whole life.
I think it's a very encouraging song to
people who've been bullied and left
out of the crowd...and I'm one of
those people. I personally think when
Jason's saying "And I have felt the same
as you," it's implying that you're not the
only one. In a way, it kind of has a
romantic edge to it. I made up a music
video for it in my head (yeah, I'm a
weirdo) and it's kind of romanticish.

Anyways, fantastic song.

Oh, and by the way...I'm getting married
to Jason Wade.

When I first heard this song (years back), I thought it was amazing because, having been through the experience of being badly bullied, I felt it captured everything...and...it amazed me that this song could pin everything down/understand. The parts that got me the most was "You lost yourself, In your search to find, Something else to hide behind" and "Refuse to feel, anything at all. Refuse to slip, refuse to fall. Can't be weak, can't stand still. You watch your back, 'cause no one will" I still don't believe he's felt quite the same though lol. I always wish I had heard the song earlier. Thankyou, Lifehouse. I have to say, after buying NNF because it had Hanging By A Moment on it, this song was a nice surprise.

I also need to add, I heard that he Jason Wade was listening to the radio and there was some kid called Simon who'd been/was being bullied on air and so he was inspired to write the song.

wow... another amazingly perfect song by lifehouse. i dont know one song by lifehouse that anyone cant relate to in one way or another no matter how popular they are or how much society tells them that they are a loser...this song is my favorite of their songs by far... i love the lyrics

Refuse to feel, anything at all
Refuse to slip, refuse to fall
Can't be weak, can't stand still
You watch your back, 'cause no one will

i can relate to that from when i had no self confidence, no friends, just me looking out for #1. this song probably kept me alive...

I don't reckon it's the biblical Simon, or Jason's friend Simon. I think the Simon of the Song is Simon Cowell; it describes how he belittles people, destroys thir dreams and generally preys on their insecurities.

The whole 'I have felt the same' refers to the fact that Jason and Lifehouse have been at the struggling musician just breaking out stage.

Awesome song, completely describes the world towards any sort of people who are trying to be remotely "good"

'Cause the weak will seek the weaker
Until they've broken them

Fulfillment to their lack of strength
At your expense

The fearful always preyed upon your confidence
Did they see the consequence
When they pushed you around
The arrogant build kingdoms
Made of the different ones
Breaking them 'til they've become
Just another crown

Can't be weak, can't stand still
You watch your back, 'cause no one will

Don't believe the lies that they told to you
Not one word was true
You're alright, you're alright,
You're alright

One could not say it any better, those my friends are a perfect set of words!
