Catch your breath hit the wall scream out loud as you start to crawl back in
Your cage the only place where they will leave you alone 'cause the weak will
Seek the weaker until they've broken them could you get it back again
Would it be the same fulfillment to their lack of strength
At your expense left you with no defense they tore it down and i have
Felt the same as you, I've felt the same as you, I've felt the same
Locked inside the only place where you feel sheltered where you feel safe
You lost yourself in your search to find something else to hide behind
The fearful always preyed upon your confidence

Did they see the consequence when they pushed you around
The arrogant build kingdoms made of the different ones
Breaking them 'til they've become just another crown
Refuse to feel, Anything at all refuse to slip, Refuse to
Fall can't be weak, Can't stand still you watch your back,
'Cause no one will you don't know why they had to go
This far traded your worth for these scars for your only
Company don't believe the lies that they told to you
Not one word was true you're alright, You're alright,
You're alright

General Comment:Being the unpopular kid in school, I know how well this song can relate to bullying and how it can damage your self-esteem and confidence. I didn't get anything TOO bad I guess but my friend got it really bad and this song pretty much sums up her life :(

General Comment:I am absolutely in love with song. I actually bought the NNF album on it's tenth anniversary without even knowing it about a month ago, anyways, Simon is on repeat all the time.

I completely understand that everyone is different. This creates a beautiful diversity among people; you can interpret a song you are listening to and connect with it on a very intimate level and it simply never rejects you, even if people do.

Being a pretty strong Christian I, PERSONALLY, interpret this song from a Christian standpoint.
With that being said, the personal connection I've developed leads me to wonder if it is possibly about Peter (Simon) from the Bible. One of the three pillar.

Peter's name was always Simon, until he met and started following Jesus. Jesus then gave him this new name Peter meaning the 'rock'. Simon Peter was not much of a 'rock' though because he often stumbled.

Crushed, overwhelmed, devastated, we all have felt before,so did Simon Peter.

    "Catch your breath
    Hit the wall
    Scream out loud
    As you start to crawl
    Back in your cage
    The only place where
    They will leave you alone"

Simon Peter was beaten, jailed, and threatened often fighting for his beliefs and the beliefs of other early Christians dealing with their Christianity.

"Fulfillment to their lack of strength
    At your expense
    Left you with no defense
    They tore it down"

When Jason talks about "they tore it down" he might be talking about the early church and Christians being scattered and in dire need of faith. This started first in Jerusalem, spreading to the rest of the world which ultimately hitting a peak in Rome with Caesars kingdom which killed all that would not bow down to Caesar (early Christians). Simon Peter's purpose was to provide encouragement to those who suffered.

"The fearful always preyed upon your confidence
    Did they see the consequence
    When they pushed you around
    The arrogant build kingdoms
    Made of the different ones
    Breaking them 'til they've become
    Just another crown"

Simon Peter knew Christ, and that made him extremely confident, better said, he had unmovable faith and trusted in the Lord.
Simon Peter saw the church scatter and watched Caesar ("the arrogant kingdoms") grow and torture early Christians. Simon often explained the right way to deal with persecution and to expect it.

"Refuse to feel, anything at all
Refuse to slip, refuse to fall
Can't be weak, can't stand still
You watch your back, 'cause no one will"

Simon Peter's confidence kept him going to give encouragement of faith to those suffering and refused to do anything less than his best, even though he often stumbled or was persecuted. His faith in Jesus Christ kept him from backsliding or giving up spreading the good news to the rest of the world, no matter the consequences.

    "You don't know why
They had to go this far
Traded your worth for these scars
    For your only company
Don't believe the lies that they told to you
    Not one word was true
    You're alright, you're alright,
    You're alright"

Simon Peter, being one of the very close three disciples of Jesus, he probably questioned why the kingdoms and people who did not believe would torture early Christians for their personal religious beliefs and refusing to praise the kings and kingdom's. The believers in Christ were told many many hideous lies about Jesus, and some glorifying lies about themselves that reined untrue.Simon Peter sent out warnings about internal attacks such as complacency. He wanted believers to hold on tight to their faith and to reject all who would distort the truth.
Simon Peter was always encouraging hence the 'you're alright' at the end of the verse.

    Sorry that was so long.

I don't believe it was about the Simon from Cyrene who carried Jesus' cross. There isn't that much information about him and his story, but hey, you never know I guess.

You can certainly believe that this song was written about a friend getting bullied, or interpret it any other way you'd like. I am just putting my interpretation out there because it means a lot to me, mainly because I have felt the same as Peter has for my faith. I hope this all makes since:)

Read 1 and 2 Peter in the Bible. If you know this part of the bible it might connect:)

My Interpretation:This song certainly has personal meaning for me.
I think it's great that it works with a Jesus interpretation, but that's not what this is to me, it's so much more--
    It's my own personal story.

    Catch your breath
    Hit the wall

--This is anger at inability to change things. This person is so mad at the world he literally punches the wall

    Scream out loud

    --Frustration. 'Nuff said.

    As you start to crawl
    Back in your cage
    The only place where
    They will leave you alone

--Pretty self-explanatory, and one of the few places where my story and this one deviates. I didn't really have a place to hide.

'Cause the weak will seek the weaker
    Until they've broken them

--Low-lives seek the weak in self esteem, and just mess with them to make themselves feel better.

Could you get it back again
    Would it be the same

--This is sort of looking back. Once you're bullied, in any sort of way, you can never get your life back the way it was before. Everything is different. Just like when you try to fix things (see above--broken), they're never exactly the same again.

Fulfillment to their lack of strength
    At your expense
    Left you with no defense
    They tore it down

--More pretty self-explanatory stuff. In order to build up their own ego, they use yours. When they do this, they tear down one's physical, emotional, or otherwise barriers (attacking, name calling).

And I have felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same

    --Empathy.

    Locked inside the only place
    Where you feel sheltered
    Where you feel safe

--I guess sometimes you have to lock yourself up in order to hide. Again, I didn't really have a "safe place."

    You lost yourself
    In your search to find
    Something else to hide behind

--In trying to hide yourself, you end up losing yourself. I personally almost completely lost my feelings. For me, this was purely on the inside. Now, whenever people insult me or something, I just don't care. I stopped caring about a lot of things.

The fearful always preyed upon your confidence
    Did they see the consequence
    When they pushed you around

--Yeah, this is pretty much repetition of a few other things. Bullies and the like take what they want from people, and push them around.

    The arrogant build kingdoms
    Made of the different ones
    Breaking them 'til they've become
    Just another crown

--This is probably the most complex part of the entire song. It shifts the focus from pretty specific to very, very broad. He says that the arrogant [bullies] "build kingdoms" (figurative--"rule over" might be a better word choice. It's hard to explain. But they do this to people who:) are different "ones." "Ones," here, refers to people. So here it means, perhaps, the nerd/geek, the emo, the goth, the racial minority, something along those lines. Now, they break them, in the way a person would break an undomesticated horse. They break them until they're... "just another crown."

And I have felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same

    --Empathy again

Refuse to feel, anything at all
Refuse to slip, refuse to fall
Can't be weak, can't stand still
You watch your back, 'cause no one will

--The first line goes back to my problems with caring and feelings. The next refers to the fact that you have to act tough all the time, or at least you feel you do. The third adds to it. The last one... Actually, I relate to this sentence really well. I had two best friends. One of them became the bully. He sure as hell didn't watch my back. The other best friend, more or less, helped him. At least, he only stood up for me once or twice, but not nearly enough. So yeah, when you get into positions of being bullied, nobody ever watches your back, unless you're really, really lucky.

    You don't know why
They had to go this far
Traded your worth for these scars
    For your only company

--*Whew* Almost done. Obviously, there is a lack of understanding as to why these bullies to it. They trade all that you have for emotional scars. I'm not sure what "For your only company" means, though.

Don't believe the lies that they told to you
    Not one word was true
    You're alright, you're alright,
    You're alright

--Bullies put people down by lying to them about how terrible and so forth they are, and that sort of thing. The last two lines, "You're alright, etc." is the person being comforted.

And I have felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same
As you, I've felt the same

As you, I've felt the same

--And of course, the empathy again.

I love this song. It has such personal meaning to me.
Take what you will from it, but this is what this song means to me, and you can't take that away from me.

General Comment:This is such a beautiful song, such a great example of Lifehouse's work. However the meaning is so "meaningful'.i felt the same feeling so I relate a lot to this song. I also can see how people tend to relate to Simon and Jesus too. A song can be seen in so many lights.Awesome song. I love Lifehouse.

General Comment:This song is about someone who is broken through years of being tormented by others. Someone who can feel nothing but self pity and wants to hide away from the world - all because of the way they've been treated by other people. Being pushed around to the point where they don't feel they have anything to offer the world any more.

'Cause the weak will seek the weaker
    Until they've broken them
Could you get it back again
    Would it be the same

    and

Refuse to feel, anything at all
Refuse to slip, refuse to fall
Can't be weak, can't stand still
You watch your back, 'cause no one will

    are my favourite lyrics.

The song writer is telling this person that they've been through similar feelings and emotions and that it's going to be ok. It doesn't matter how much people might try to grind you down and do things that make you feel like you don't matter - you really do. If you let yourself be open to it, others will show you that you're going to be fine, like many others who have had to endure the same feelings in their lifetime. Never give up on life.

General Comment:Not all of Lifehouse's songs are based on religion, most of them are, but there are some where it's about a girl! Please stop jumping down people's throats and saying it's all about religion when it's not. I know there are many songs about girls like you and me, first time, whatever it takes, etc. Broken is about his friend who had a kidney transplant, so don't assume things you don't know. do the research first. this song could be about over coming troubles, the bible, or his friend.

General Comment:first off, people need to stop saying "its not about god." or "its not about life." ...did you write the song? no. so let people put their own opinions down, thats what this site is for.

at first i thought it was about somebody understanding someone else who isnt fitting in or is getting picked on all the time; however, i think this song CAN be about simon from the bible - if you look at it that way. you have to be familiar with the story to understand it tho. but i didnt think that until i read it on here. so the song can mean whatever you want, thats the beauty of it.

General Comment:I'm extremely surprised that only one person thought of the character Simon from The Lord of the Flies. That's who I immediately thought of, at least, and it made this song special to me since that book was absolutely amazing and that character is so special to me. I would hope some people on here are old enough to have read that book in class and remembered Simon. He was actually a Christ figure as well.

As for Jason writing it about his friend, that's touching. But I doubt songwriters expect every person to know every personable meaning behind the song. Take it how it comes to you, especially with a song as emotive as this.
