Lyrics for God Put A Smile Upon Your Face as interpreted by zygoticmynci

God Put A Smile Upon Your Face Lyrics
where do we go, nobody knows
i've gotta say i'm on my way down
god gave me style and gave me grace
and put a smile upon my face

where do we go to draw the line
i've gotta say, i wasted all your time, oh honey honey
where do i go to fall from grace
god put a smile upon your face, aww yeah

ahh when you work it out i'm worse than you
yeah when you work it out, i want it too
now when we work out where to draw the line
your guess is as good as mine...

where do we go, nobody knows
don't ever say you're on your way down, well
god gave you style and gave you grace
and put a smile upon your face

I saw it live. Since then I've liked it much more. You can't really appreciate Coldplay till you've seen them live.

This song is IMMENSE! After seeing Coldplay in Glasgow at Bellahouston park, front row centre thank you very much - this song just means the world to me now. I I begin jumping up and down and swaying madly like I did at the time, whilst the bad hippy beside me blew weed in my face and elbowed me in the face. GOOD TIMES BABY!

Love song comes to mind when I hear this played. The relationship and the collapse of it has him on his way down and he is trying to save face and asking God for style and grace. He is looking for help.

its good but not as well as "clocks", "the scientist" and "in my place"

the GODSMACK's "serenity"(2003) is so similar to this

Fuck all you pea brained songmeaning memebers saying oh this song is a love song. I mean get a brain. The world DOES NOT FUCKING revolve around romances. You have been mind zapped brainwashed by to many sitcoms & Hollywood movies. Study philisophy, politics, sociology, psychology. Read a book, but for godsakes STOP this inane 'oh this is a love song'. "I HATE REPEATING MYSELF" - MEL GIBSON -'CONSPIRACY THEORY' by Loose Tongue on 11-14-2004 @ 04:44:49 AM As opposed to the spiritual The Scientist, GPASOYF is an agnostic song. See the reverse psychology of the Coldplay titles...TS being 'believing' is contradictory to the traditional Science/Religion wars/debates '...now when we work out where to draw the line your guess is as good as mine...' This is the essence of the song, as it's sung many times. In the end, all the atheists, deists, nihilist, anarchists, Muslims, Christains, Buddhists, Evangilicals etc et al have something of value to say, as it all tries to find the answer to the Time Immemorial (a glorious mission to find The Invisisble One?/Crowded House/Neil Finn) question of whether there is a God. So in the end nobody really knows, and we all are AGNOSTIC: undecided/sitting on the fence to some degree. The opening verse is about uncertainity, there are too many choices, human beings don't know which road to take, there's too much clutter in today's rat race capitilist society. The third verse is stating the infallible human insecurity/inferiority complex/loneliness, we always put ourselves down, we devalue our opinions for fear of rejection...so when one of us works it out, finds all the questions to life problems/mysteries/puzzles...we all all want to know that answer...so please share it: long live bi-polar Ambivalent Agnosticism (ala John Lennon's Imagine)...sometimes believer, sometimes skeptic.

Wow, I think this is Coldplay's masterpiece......its "Poppie, yet can appeal to Critics and Hippsters". I'm suprised it doesn't get more praise.

It took me a long time to see the depth in this songs meaning. I realize now that it's very much an agnostic song (I didn't know it had any philosophical or religious connotations before).

We don't know what's going to happen after death...your guess is as good as mine, if there is a God...where do we draw the line between heaven and hell?

dont you people know anything? its about those who are prayed apon by the secret world. they dont know where to go and no one will/can tell them. "when you work it out im worse than you" is about how they feel that the people sending them insane are worse than what they did to get in trouble with the secret world in the first place! i can say no more. its secret.

amazing song I interpret as happy! Like no matter what happens God loves me and gave me style and grace and even tho I may be unrighteous he saved me! Loose tongue we all have our oppinions on way this song means...but u don't have to tell everyone that they are pea brained just because they interpret this song differently haha

CORRECT LYRICS:

***God GIVE me style and GIVE me grace
***GOD put a smile upon my/your face

The song was actually not even intended to make the final cut of the album. Its original title was “Your Guess Is As Good As Mine. This song really doesn’t have as much religious content as people put into it but I’m all for religion and getting into philosophical discussions/debates just not over a song that didn’t even have that much content in it.

It’s about social dilemmas and losing yourself in your status and reputation, not knowing who you are, disappearing into everything else (your surroundings & circumstances). If you live in the world and for the world and don’t live for something more than trying to find your space in it, you become nothing, losing your individuality- you’re not real you’re just nothing & nobody.

So, it’s a waste of time fighting for material substances and gain that is only something to pay off. But we’re so unaware of it… of being caught up in our own life and our own temporary pleasure; we can’t see the big picture, so when’s it going to stop? How can we stop something that we all were born into and we all live in? Where do we draw the line want and need? Your guess is as good as mine.

I really don't think the main theme is religion, I think it's more about the line between right and wrong.
In the first stanza, the speaker made some sort of mistake. Maybe he lost his job or something... And he's asking for the strength to keep his head up on his "way down". He wants to have style and grace about it instead of being a sore loser. His situation gets him thinking about his life/opinions.

In the second stanza I get the feeling he's having a discussion with someone, and admitting that he was wrong. That his lectures about the right way to do things were a waste of time. He's realising that things aren't black and white. That sometimes there isn't a clear line between the correct way to lead your life and the incorrect one.

3rd stanza: He used to think he was better than others, perhaps because he's richer, a harder worker or more successful then them, but now he realises he might be worse off. He's fallen from grace and no longer has everything figured out.
"*now* when we work out where to draw the line"
it seems they worked it out before, and he was sure of himself, but now this confusion is a new thing.

At the end he starts to regain hope. Maybe, just like his friend, he doesn't have to have his life's plan ready. Even though sometimes you feel all is lost, you never actually know where life and God will take you.
