Lyrics for Savior as interpreted by The Marine

Savior Lyrics
Dusting off your savior
You were always my favorite
Always my man-All in a hand

To celebrate you is greater
Now that I can-always my man

Now you see what I came for
No one here is to blame for
Misunderstand- All in a hand

Just like you cause you make me
All that I am-All in a hand

A butterfly that flaps its wings
Affecting almost everything
The more I hear the orchestra
The more I have something to bring
And now I see you in a beautiful
And different light
He’s just a man and any damaging done
Will be all right
Call out my name
Call and I came

Dusting of your savior
Forgiving your behavior
He’s just a man-All in a hand

Your hero’s designated to waver
Anyone can-Always my man

I would never betray you
Look at me who could raise you
Face in the sand-Safe in your hand

You were always my favorite
Always my man-All in a hand

We are the read hots
And we’re loving up the me nots
The flowers in your flower pot
Are dancing on your table tops
And now I see you in a beautiful
And different light
He’s just a man and everything he does
Will be all right
Call out my name
Call and I came

Dusting off your savior
The life you have narrated
You were my man

i feel its about someone who died close to anthony or the band, and how he never fully appreciated the man until he was dead and he sees him and life overal differently now that this man is dead

i believe it's a commentary on Christ. before all the proud-to-be-atheist people jump on me, why don't you reread the lyrics with this in mind.

"to celebrate you is greater"
"now you see what i came for"
"and now I see you in a beautiful and different light"
"forgiving your behavior" / "any damage done will be all right"
"look at me who could raise you"
"the life you have narrated"

come on... with the title of 'Savior'? seems clear the meaning of the song.

Or - you can gloss it over if you wish.

cheers, dubya

The song may be about God, but it doesn't ever say anything to make one think its about Jesus. It could just as well be to Allah for all you know. It is a spiritual song, but I doubt its about Jesus because the Chili Peppers don't seem like the guys who would write such a song, based on their other (kickass) song Shallow Be Thy Game. Read the lyrics to that song and then see if you still think they would write a song dedicated to an organized religion.

If this has anything to do with any organised religion, my guess is that it was kind of... mocking it? The tone of the song just strikes me as really sarcastic, especially with the line "dusting off your saviour", as if maybe people only turn to religion when they feel they need to.

Anthony laughed it off when and interviewer asked him if the song was about christ. And seeing as the man wrote 'Shallow Be Thy Game' on the previous album I would sincerely doubt it! ('I will be your heretic')

I always thought it was about John too until I read an interview with Anthony in which he says it's about coming to peace with his father. And not blaming his father for any of (anthonys) personal demons. Because it was his father who introduced him to sex, fame and the hollywood party life at an early age. (dare i say drugs too, yes i believe drugs have a slight relevance in this song but i dont want people jumping on me for saying that)

Some of the lines must have been written with John in mind, John had just returned to the band after a seven year silent conflict with Anthony. Saving the band from a possible near breakup.

i thought it was about john at first, then possibly hillel, but i guess it could also be about his father

i love this song.
and i think its about comming to terms with who you are.
and even though your parents made you and gave you personality traits and what not genetically and with how they raised you.
it's still your choice to be who you are.
and maybe this songs about no longer blaming other people with what you hate about yourself
but admiting that its you.
and theres no other way you'd have it.

or maybe its about being who his dad wants him to be...

i dont know...

Some people mentioned that this couldn't be about religion because of the views Anthony displays in Shallow Be Thy Game, but to me this song seems to be about rediscovering Christ or God or whoever. "Dusting off your savior" It's like after such a long time of not beilieving in God he is now, and he's comparing that to taking something off the shelf and blowing the dust off cuz your ready to use it. However, I also like the father theory cuz a lot of people blame God for their problems and then have an inner hatred for him like I'm assuming Anthony may have had with his father, and then when he was ready to talk to his dad again he prolly felt like it was the same kind of relationship that people have with God, they think that everything bad that happens is their fault! I don't know, just some brainstorming on my behalf!

it is impossible to recognize dubyas comment as valid when bits of lines are being quoted out of context. after 'to celebrate you is greater' they go on to say 'Now that I can-always my man', which too me pretty much solidifies that its about a human being dying. hillel prolly. it seems if a higher power were being discussed then there wouldnt be the many references to a man. in terms of the title, a savior doesnt have to be a greater power- i consider many of the people in my life saviors. to me he is talking about knowing someone who has such an intense effect on you that they change your life. regardless this song is beautiful especially the call out my name bit, one of my favorite rhcp lines.

hey calloutmyname aka maya, i love you darling
(sorry for the interuption of personal matter)
boozm, you are totally right, its about reconcialition with his father, i think its so obvious.

to respond to the whole christ theory thing
how could you say "He’s just a man-All in a hand" about christ that would be so irrational.

and "Just like you cause you make me" how could anthony claim to be like jesus?

(dubya, Shroomin15, sexwithoutfury, boozm, and all...)

i don't consider myself as a christian ("a follower of christ"), but i believe there's a connection to jesus in this song. as i interpret it, jesus wasn't saying we should become "followers of jesus", but that we are all god's children, brothers and sisters, and therefore we all are jesuses in a way (which is to say no-one is jesus). talking about "shallow be thy game..." herecy is not "anti-religious", it's rather a radical critique of *institutionalized* religion and power - power of people over each other, power of the priest over his flock, power of the human being over the non-human living. but it's a critque in a religious context, calling for an emancipatory re-reading of the message of jesus. or rather it is a call to search for a personal mystical experience of unity-of-all-in-god, which i think is in the core of all religion. modern, a-religious human can find the same intuition in much of existentialist philosophy, or even in quantum physics. (physics of course doesn't say anything about ethics, love, empathy or forgiving)

so the message of this song can be connected to jesus, but still it's not a song about jesus (anyone who considers jesus as "the" savior is playing to the hands of the power hungry), it's a song of us - you and me. we all can be saviours to each other if we decide so (and we must be, if we want to live in freedom and peace), and that is what i believe jesus, for one, wanted to say.

i don't read the bible, i think it is full of s**t. when i want to get to a spiritual, loving or joyous mood, i listen to rhcp.

and onceagain, i like your words

some recommendations on this subject:
-the novel "Q" by Luther Blissett, about radical heretic movements during the reformation and much more
-the movie "Waking Life" - just awesome, you must see it!
-and of course, Monty Python's "Life of Brian".

"no priests, no masters!"

"A butterfly that flaps its wings affecting almost everything." This is the chaos theory, or 'butterfly effect.' The idea is that something so subtle as the flapping of a butterfly's wings can cause tornados in Iowa. Especially over long periods of time, it's rather interesting really.

for me this is a song about someone (maybe anthony himself or another band member) loving somebody so much that it kills them. and someone they thought theyde never have but finally did get. "to celebrate you is greater now that i can" shows that its greater cause he can finally have them instead of dreaming of them. i think that the idea of "hes just a man and any damage done will be alright" means that to them no matter what the person they love did its fine cause in their eyes this person is god, he is their saviour. "call out my name, call and i came" he wished that they would call out his name and when they eventually did he was there. i can relate to this song so much and my views may be wrong but thats how i feel bout it.
i saw them last sunday mua haha they were immense

I see this song in 2 parts. The first part is the part of a man and the higher pitched parts are from a god figure. Notice how the parts from the man are kinda harsh and sorrowful sounding. The god parts are peaceful and smooth.

"Dusting off your savior
You were always my favorite
Always my man-All in a hand
To celebrate you is greater
Now that I can-always my man
Now you see what I came for
No one here is to blame for
Misunderstand- All in a hand
Just like you cause you make me
All that I am-All in a hand"

So this part is about how a guy who has sinned and led a bad life in the eyes of his choice of god realizing that he need his god. He thinks he can just pull the god off a shelf dust it off and get salvation from him. He tries to reassure his god by telling him that "you were always my man" and that he wants to celbrate the god. He is accepting his religion after rejecting it for a long time.

"A butterfly that flaps its wings
Affecting almost everything"

This part is from the perspective of the god. He is saying everything you do has an affect on everything and everyone around you and to watch yor thoughts and actions.

"The more i hear the orchestra the more i have something to bring"

The more you praise me the more ill bless you

"And now I see you in a beautiful
And different light
He’s just a man and any damaging done
Will be all right
Call out my name
Call and I came"

I used to think you were a lost soul but know i see you in a beautiful and different light. Your sins are forgiven. If you call me ill come to you.

and the rest of the song is pretty much the same as this...sorry this is so long

I think its nota bout Jesus, but about God. After all, look at this part
"I would never betray you
Look at me who could raise you
Face in the sand-Safe in your hand "
the part about he who could raise you. God is often thought about as the Father...so that's where it hits me. but then again as said above, it could be about Allah....truly, unless you ask him (the writer lol) but then again...i think that dank22 has a good point too.

I believe this song is about John. He left the band in 1993, and they were glad to have him back for this album.
