i dunno - i may be soooo wrong - but i always thought it was about self harm - right from the first time i heard it!

Its about lonelyness - how people are never there - how sometimes people do feel sooo alone - like there is no1 around. But i dunno - i just get the impression it is self harm - because it is lonelyness..........

"Scar tissue the I wish you saw - Sarcastic Mister know it all" --- kinda like he/she is cutting - because of this person - wishing they could see what their doing to them

"Blood loss in a bathroom stall - Sounthern girl with a scarlet drawl" ---- cutting in the bathroom - bleeding - having nowhere to go - stuck in a world - with what feel like 4 walls.....

"Wave goodbye to ma and pa 'cause...." ------ this maybe the end - things have got to much - cant take it any more.

"I'll make it to the moon if i have to crawl" ------ they will be free - away from everything - kinda like there mision to get there.

"With the bird I'll share - this loney view..." ------ there is no1 esle there - all alone - looking at things but knowing cant be a part of it

So yeah - i am not sure though - maybe its just me.......being stupid - and completly getting the wrong end of the stick !

I had never thought about that angle Puddle (self-harm), but it seems to make sense - I think more generally it is about solitude, isolation and the inability to open oneself to the world. The verse about the "Southern Girl" shows one side of isolation - depression and loneliness, where self-harm or suicide is a way to show your pain to the world. Being with the birds could mean the afterlife in this context, seeing the world from above. But then the later verse about "autumn's sweet" and "I'll make it the moon if i have to crawl" seems optimistic to me. It's still about isolation and loneliness, but it's saying that it's okay to be independent and be yourself. This verse reminds me of the book "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" by Richard Bach about the struggle a seagull has because he is different than any other seagull. He strays from the flock and does what he wants and in the end he finds true happiness. To me this song seems to be about the struggle to open up and move from despair to acceptance of who you are.

I read in Kerrang that he wrote the lines: "With the birds I share this lonely view" during recording, after going outside for some respite, and seeing the birds in the sky represented where he was at the time. The song "fell into place" after seeing the birds.

This song is so good. I think it's about being alone also, no people around. "birds" as he says are the only living things that are near him and with him. "Wave goodbye to ma and pa" ya...I don't think it's the end, I think it's the beginning of a time he has to get through alone, all by himself. Great song. Long live RHCP, can't wait for the new CD

I think most of you are right. This song is really amazing, it's just incredible... i love it, and i love every single thing the red hot did. they're teh best band ever.

Awesome song, I love it to death. I think that some of you guys are kind of right about the meaning. I think it's about feeling alone, with no one to talk to, but then realizing that it's okay and you canbecome more optimistic, like tubesocks said. That's my opinion about the meaning, but other then that I just wanna say that I love this song!!! :)

I think the song goes deffinately with feeling isolated--I believe that's how Anthony felt when he wrote this. I think it's about his past addiction to heroine, and how alone he can feel so alone.

I guess its expressing a sentiment of incomprehensible differences. I get the vibe that, well...he'll share a kiss with you if you close your eyes, cos with the bird I'll share this lonely view...they share a love, but cannot relate, and those differences still bring them together...

well tubesocks "autumns sweet but we call it fall" seems really depressing to me because it could be bitter sweet and why wouldn't they just keep calling it autumn if it were so sweet, plus fall could mean emotionally and autumn is the season where thing begin to die so I think it would be more depressing that optimistic

I think the lines "Fallin' all over myself
To lick your heart and taste your health" is to do with sex her heart being her breasts and her health to do with oral sex. Maybe it's about having cheap affairs with people you don't really care about so you are not so alone or when you are trying to get over some one. But after reading the other comments I sort of agree with the self harm theory.Bird could be taken on two levels, bird as in the literal term or as in a female that does not really have any significance it's just another "bird" that he has picked up. But whatever it means it is a excellent song.

Here is my interpretation:

Scar tissue - at first I thought it was about drugs/heroin, which is what most of their songs are about.

After reading the complete lyrics, I think it is a man in prison ("with birds I share this lonely view"). Maybe he got mixed up with this southern girl and gave her some bad heroin and she OD'ed and he got blamed or she was his girlfriend. Now he is in jail for selling or using.

i love anthony kiedis and the rest of the chili peppers as well!! this song is amazing..i first heard this song driving in a car with my mom...tears just started pouring from my eyes and i couldnt stop it..the song is just so beautiful especially on the nice summer day i 1st heard it on.this song reminds me of summer .and i believe the meaning is...lonliness...feeling like theres no1 to turn to...trying to get away from ur hometown perhaps .and starting a new life though it will be a struggle on the way.say goodbye to ma and pa could mean he is finally on his own..facing the world on his own without the help of those who have cared for him all along.he needs to get through this on his own and in the end he will be happy with himself.
