Lyrics for Otherside as interpreted by The Marine

Otherside Lyrics
How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don’t
I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

I heard your voice through a photograph
I thought it up and brought up the past
Once you’ve gone you can never go back
I’ve got to take it on the otherside

Centuriees are what it meant to me
A cemetery where I marry the sea
Stranger things could never change my mind
I’ve got to take it on the otherside
Take it on
Take it on

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don’t
I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

Pour my life into a paper cup
The ashtray’s full and I’m spillin’ my guts
She wants to know am I still a slut
I’ve got to take it on the other side

Scarlet starlet and she’s in my bed
A candidate for a soul mate bled
Push the trigger and pull the thread I’ve got to take it on the otherside
Take it on the otherside
Take it on
Take it on

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don’t
I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

Turn me on take me for a hard ride
Burn me out leave me on the otherside
I yell and tell it that
It’s not a friend
I tear it down I tear it down
And then it’s born again

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don’t
I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

How long I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

I love RHCP and this is my favourite song of theirs! :) I love how Anthony's voice is in this song, it's coolness.

It means when you're screwed over, You can't just go on living through it. (How long will I slide") You have to move on and try something different ("Take it on the other side")

I think it's a justification for the use of drugs. When you're fucked up and your life is a mess, you want to go to the "otherside", that means the other reality induced by the drugs.

Incredible son of the Red Hot Chili Peppers... I really love this band, and this song, i've heard every sigle song of this band and i love them all. Since their first album until californication u can notice the way they've evolved in their music (and Anthony in his voice)... i cant wait for the next album "By The Way". RHCP is definitively my favorite band, i love this guys.

Yep, this is a pretty kikazz song. As I was reading the lyrics though, I think it might be about suicide, or just death in general. "Slit my throat" Otherside could be relating to the afterlife. "Once you've gone you can never go back"

Also, I think it may be relating to drug use because of the line, "Burn me out leave me on the otherside" Burn is a term for smoking marijuana, so "Burn me out" would be like, "get me stoned" and "leave me on the otherside" could mean that he likes being in that other state of mind, or being stoned, the drug world is the otherside and he wants to stay there.

Just my two cents though.

anthony says that when he wrote this song they were in a good moment, an they felt very close to each other.
but what it's the meaning of "she want to know if i'm still a slut". ok everybody says that they are gays or somethin like that, but i don't believe that.

fuck you!!! i love RHCp, their are the best. but we must consider that the prens has the idea that they are gays, Why i'm saying that???? cause if in the video Warped Anthony give a kiss to Dave, a very passional kiss. So fuck you, and please try to understand that somebody don't think as we are. i think the same, that they are not gays. And saw his girlfriend a blond hot girl. but well when i defend the band what the fuck am i supposed to say? that they he gave him a kiss causes they are good friends, no!! well but i still believe that they are not gays.

to me, this song is about a guy that was just dumped by a girl, hence the reference to a picture talking to him, and maybe the "i yell and tell that it's not a friend" is reffering to his drug addiction, which could be a result of his depression from being dumped, but then again ive heard anthony say plenty of times his songs dont really have one meaning, they are different to everyone, which is why they kick

DEPRESSION!!!!!!

OBVIOUSLY anthony was very emotional when writing this, and since i think when hes emotional he thinks of Hillel, since he was the closest friend anthony ever has )look at the lyrics for Me and my Friends-

at this point
in this friendly verse
I've got to sing a little something
that I haven't rehearsed
it's about my man
and his name is Hillel
for who my love
is woul brother sacred

I think the song is about his continuing depression for the loss of Hillel and him thinking about when he'll move on from his past life- 'how long, how long will i slide to seperate my side..?'
Who knows.. maybe anthony had a suicide attempt when Hillel died- 'Slitting my throat is all i ever'

And this would explain most of the song if u read the lyrics

Its about a person's depression. Anthony's singing about how he thinks so little of himself..... hence the lines

Pour my life into a paper cup
The ashtray’s full and I’m spillin’ my guts
She wants to know am I still a slut
I’ve got to take it on the other side

Scarlet starlet and she’s in my bed
A candidate for a soul mate bled
Push the trigger and pull the thread I’ve got to take it on the

someone wants to know about whether or not he's as abusive as he was. Slut is meant in a figurative sense i think, as is the line about the scarlet starlet.... they could mean anything from drugs to just low self esteem. The question is does the person in the song still bring this bad thing on himself?

The singer realizes that he is still bringing it on himself, and has been for awhile (how long will i slide) and through this realization slips back into depression and comes to the realization that whatever it is he's been doing will kill him in the end no matter what, so why not kill himself now?

Basically he's in depression in this song. Most people, maybe even Anthony, says it's about dying.

I dunno, but it's not "burn me out" it's "turn me on, take me for a hard ride, throw me off meet me on the otherside" anyways, I think the song is about pushing and stuffing pain down, but then it comes back "I yell it tell it that it's not my friend I tear it down I tear it down and then it's born again" he's torn up inside and he's not recovering. The video helps too. he's in a cycle sort of.

Polak, I remember reading somewhere that Kiedas and Flea were best friends. I mean, don't get me wrong, Hillel and Kiedas were good friends, but I thought the original drummer, i don't remember his name, was Hillel's best friend, and when he died, the guy left the band to mourn, and then he later joined up with Pearl Jam. But yeah, this song is definitely about depression, the Chili Peppers kick ass, can't wait for "By the Way" to come out, So soon...

I hadn't ever thought about this as a song about drugs before, but it makes a lot of sense. I always thought it was about suicide. "Seperate my side" and "slit my throat" are obvious references to death, coupled with "I don't believe it's bad" makes it sound like suicide. "Pour my life into a paper cup." He's condensing everything that's happened to him into a passionate little shpeel. "The ashtray's full," he's stressed out and nervous and therefore smoking quite a bit. "And I'm spilling my guts." self-explanatory. "She wants to know am I still a slut." The one person he trusted and opened up to is mocking him.
Then the scarlet starlet bit: he fucked around with somebody, and his semi-serious significant other "bled." i.e. killed herself or just got hurt and left, making him want to "push the trigger" or "pull the thread." And then the interlude before the last chorus, when he goes, "I yell and tell it that it's not my friend. I tear it down. I tear it down, and then it's born again," I think he's talking about his will to live, which prevents him from the peace of suicide. But, like stillwater said, Anthony is a genius, so all of their songs mean a million different things.

To me it is about death in some way or another..."a cemetary where I marry the sea"..when he dies he gets buried in a cemetary and becomes part of the ground which meets or "marries" the sea..or it could be about someone he loves dying who he wanted to marry and he throws the ring into the sea. "Once you've gone you can never go back" and the line about the photograph meaning he's remembering her and that she can never come back..and "candidate for a soulmate bled" can be about her death. So it could be either about him dying or a girl he loved very much that died. Or I could just be completely wrong.

The lines "I yell and tell it... then it's born again" remind me of my ex-bf. He suffered from depression and sniffed glue to escape from reality. When he was high he'd see a goblin and he'd shout at it telling it to leave him alone but it would never go until he'd come down from his high. I'm not sure what Anthony was trying to say in this song but this is my interpretation.
