Lyrics for Californication as interpreted by The Marine

Californication Lyrics
Psychic spies from China
Try to steal your mind elation
Little girls from Sweden
Dream of silver screen quotations
And if you want these kind of dreams
Its Californication

It’s the edge of the world
And all of western civilization
The sun may rise in the east
At least it settles in a final location
It’s understood that Hollywood
Sells Californication

Pay your surgeon very well
To break the spell of aging
Celebrity skin is this your chin
Or is it war your waging

First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Cailfornication

Marry me, girl, be the fairy to the world
Be my very own constellation
A teenage bride with a baby inside
Getting high on information
And buy me a star on the boulevard
It’s Californication

Space may be the final frontier
But it’s made in a Hollywood basement
Cobain can you hear the spheres
Singing songs off station to station
And Alderaan’s not far away
It’s Californication

Born and raised by those who praise
Control of population everybody’s been there and
I don’t mean on vacation

First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Cailfornication

Destruction leads to a very rough road
But it also breeds creation
And earthquakes are to a girl’s guitar
They are just another good vibration
And tidal waves couldn’t save the world
From Califonication

Pay your sugeon very well
To break the signs of aging
Sicker then the rest
There is no test
But this is what you’re craving

First born unicorn
Hard core soft porn
Dream of Californication
Dream of Cailfornication

This song seems to me to be about how California, or more specifically, Hollywood helps to "control the population" by selling it false dreams of things like eternal youth ("to break the signs of aging") and other false and corrupt ideas ("sicker than the rest/there is no test/but this is what you're craving").

Kiedis' lyrics in this song are impressionistic, or in other words, sloppily written, but there is a bit of cryptic language in there that I think has additional meaning, whether it be referencing movies, songs or other. With those he's either just throwing stuff out or he is not laying all his cards on the table.

Could this song just be referencing other movies and songs? and when they say tidal waves couldn't save the world from californication, could that mean that God cannot help us now?

I think it's about California's obsession with fornication. And the fact that everyone appears to be so happy in Hollywood and the outsiders are deceived by this appearance -- "Little girls from Sweden
Dream of silver screen quotations"

"Destruction leads to a very rough road
But it also breeds creation
And earthquakes are to a girls guitar
They are just another good vibration
And tidal waves couldnt save the world
From Califonication"

^ Meaning that with destruction always comes creation, everything has a good side. Tidal waves couldn't save the world from Californication because it's already corrupted America. Since so many people are zombied by it, if you will, there's no hope that people could be saved from it.

Californication is the dream or desire to become rich and famous that most people have at some point or another, furthermore, it can also be seen as a place of mind where people delude themselves with this dream. Due to hollywood and the entertainment industry, california almost exagerates this dream, makes it into a comodity and tries to export it outside itself. America is extremely materialistic and so many people desire to be rich, famous and good looking like so many famous moviestars and musicians. Many of those people coming to california are trying to get into the entertainment industry and so are in a state of californication, hollywood of course merely plays into this, and it is suggested in the song that the dream of fame and being able to acheive it is nothing but a hollywood myth that is destroying society, people go through all types of operations (botox, boob jobs) to succeed in hollywood, and of course this is just insanity. The lyrics all make perfect sense when one views californication as a state of mind or dream most people entertain at some point, something that is summed up in the line, "we've all been there and i don't mean on vacation," of course thinking about being rich and famous could be a vacation from ourselves, which may be why we go on this mental vacation often.

Kurt Cobain, David Bowie's album Station To Station, and Alderaan - the planet princess Leia was from in Star Wars. Alderaan was destroyed by The Empire, implying that the world is being destroyed.

Well I do agree with the song talking about the corruption of Hollywood, I also think it's saying that so many people want to move to California, because they think it's such an amazing place to live. California is always said to be great place in general. And people not only in the US but also in other countries hear of California and think if they move there they could have a chance at a perfect life. But the truth is it's full of drugs, sex, money, and some of the people that live there will do whatever it takes to get what they want. I think the song is trying to tell people how it really is and not to get there hopes up.

I'm just putting this together with what someone else posted but if David Bowie had something called 'Station to Station' maybe it has something to do with the Kurt Cobain line because Nirvana did do a cover of The Man Who Sold the World and...I don't really know where I'm going with this but there seems to be alot of references in this song. "And earthquakes are to a girl’s guitar they are just another good vibration" that could be a Beach Boy nod.
I think the real thing is that when they were writing this they wanted to mention alot of things every knew so it would hit people on a deeper level and so you would actually see that Californication is like in everyones mind and it affecting everyone.

it was weird that after Pandora played this song they played All Apologies by Nirvana. Anyways, its the glorification of California, the whole American Dream and life in general. People are gullible to look like this and that when they see it in movies, tv and magazine. Also, how everyone think California is this dream state and in a way it is but when you finally see past the glitz and glamour you'll see reality. Then the idea is the best damn country and how everyone gives an arm and limb to get here only to realize that it isn't what its cut out to be. Living in Cali, i too was fooled when i moved here, but thankfully i snapped out of it and saw the real side of cali.

What does the refrence to kurt cobain precicely mean?
Is he asking him a question about it?
Is it somewhat a tribute?
This song makes me sad.
I wish cobain were still alive.
