So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
And through the life force and there goes her friend
On her Nishiki it's out of time
And through the portal they can make amends
Hey would you say whatever we're blanket friends
Can't stop what's coming
Can't stop what's on its way
And through the walls they made their mudpies
I've got your mind I said
She said I've your voice
I said you don't need my voice girl
You have your own
But you never thought it was enough of
So they went years and years
Like sisters blanket girls
Always there through that and this
There's nothing we cannot ever fix I said
Can't stop what's coming
Can't stop what's on its way
Can't stop what's coming
Can't stop what's on its way
Bells and footfalls and soldiers and dolls
Brothers and lovers she and I were
Now she seems to be sand under his shoes
There's nothing I can do
Can't stop what's coming
Can't stop what's on its way
Can't stop what's coming
Can't stop what's on its way
And now I speak to you are you in there
You have her face and her eyes
But you are not her
And we go at each other like blank ettes
Who can't find their thread and their bare
Can't stop loving you
Can't stop loving
Can't stop what is on its way
And I see it coming
And it's on its way
On her Nishiki it's out of time
And through the portal they can make amends
Hey would you say whatever we're blanket friends
Can't stop what's coming
Can't stop what's on its way

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
The song is about friends and how they thought they'd be best friends forever, but now they hate each other because of some betrayal. At one point, the friend wanted to be just like her, hence the "I have your voice line", to which the narrator of the song responds that she is beautiful and individual, and doesn't need to be like her. It sounds like a relationship with a man tore the friends apart, but the narrator has accepted it. However, she's still worried, even though she says they act like "blankettes", I thought that was her way of saying they acted like a word she can't even bring herself to say.... But somehow, she can't stop loving her friend
@j-love
As an aspiring poet and Singer myself, in my opinion there never has been and possibly never will be a talent comparable to Tori Amos. I have studied many of her songs/poetry for about 25rs. Your interpretation of Bells For Her is 100% Spot On!
I'm not in any way a know it all, But when it comes to this Particular song, I not only can relate,.... I've lived most of it! Not the parts in relation to being friends as young children. But the lyrics(now she seems to be sand under his shoes) I felt it and lived it myself as I was sand under his shoes. As for the lyrics (I said you don't need my voice you have your own), it's impossibly hard for me to this day to hear those lyrics and so many others, as it brings me to tears.
The man I loved and still do, as she still does too also (as I just recently found out) and all of my insecurities ripped mine & her friendship to threads. She was so confident, intelligent, and with all her natural delicate beauty.... How could I begin to compare??? I met Maria through my husband as the 2 of them were friends about 13yrs before I met her and from the 1st moment meeting her, we bonded immediately and deeply in a way that no words can begin to explain.... After about 4 yrs into hers & my friendship (so I'd thought), I began to see a deep connection between her and my husband. Looking back on it now, although it was about14 yrs back is tremendously painful. The song, the lyrics, & memories still haunt me. The 1st time that I have allowed myself to hear Bells for her in about a decade.
