Can I get your hand to write on
Just a piece of lead to bite on
What am I to fly my kite on
Do you want to flash your light on
Take a look its on display - for you
Coming down no not today

Did you meet your fortune teller
Get it off with no propellor
Do it up its always stellar
What a way to finally smell her
Pick it up its not to strong - for you
Take a piece and pass it on

Fly away on my zephyr
I feel it more then ever
And in this perfect weather
Well find a place together
Fly on my wing

Riddlin on liberator
Find a way to be a skater
Rev it up to levitator
Super mainly aviator
Take a look its on display - for you
Coming down no not today

Fly away on my zephyr
I feel it more then ever
And in this perfect weather
Well find a place together
In the water where the scent of my emotion
All the world will pass me by
Fly away on my zephyr
Well find a place together

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa - do you
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa - wont you
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Fly away on my zephyr
I feel it more then ever
And in this perfect weather
Well find a place together

In the water where the scent of my emotion
All the world will pass me by
Fly away on my zephyr
Were gonna live forever
Forever

My Interpretation:I¨ve always interpreted this song just as a song about FLYING. Zephyr is a light aircraft used by amateur pilots. This is a confession of an enthusiastic pilot! I feel it like a kind of dialogue of pilot and his beloved plane. "Do you want to flash my light on..." "take a look, it´s on display..." "super friendly aviator"... "what a night to fly my kite on"... "coming down not, not today"...
Maybe you won¨t agree with me, but it¨s not by accident that pilots often use words that can be used also for love or drug trip... to try to describe the magic of flight. I just feel the emotions of a enchanced pilot in this song :)

General Comment:By the Way is their greatest album to date! Lyric-wise is phenomenal and the depth of these songs musically is over the top. The song are played with such passion that I haven't been able to find on another rhcp album. I know a lot would argue that Stadium Arcadium is the best one, but I beg to differ. Yes Stadium Arcadium is obviously a masterpiece but it has something missing which is the great lyrics that were featured on By the Way. Now, I'm With You, I believe that is grand on the scale that is so much bigger than anything they ever done. Musically, the album takes you over a wide range of different musical stylings and the way it is composed and arranged would make anyone's heart melt. But call me old fashion, (not really, I'm only 18), By the Way is still one of the greatest piece of music I ever heard.

My Interpretation:I know everyone says this is a love song, but this song screams LSD to me. First of all there's the crazy, colourful video accompanied by some bizzare lyrics in the verse which seems to be like a wild chain of thoughts. Then you get to the chorus, 'Fly away on my Zephyr, I feel it more than ever, and in this perfect weather, we'll find a place together' - the 'Zephyr' really meaning to go on an adventure through drugs and him feeling it more than ever being his addiction. The perfect weather and finding a wonderful place mix in with this hallucination of a perfect world. Furthermore, you get to the 'In the water where I center my emotion, all the world can pass me by...' which is saying he's oblivious to the outside world. However, I still think that love can be mixed in there with him inviting someone else to come on this hallucinogenic journey, and for them to be happy and free from reality. Just my take on it :)

General Comment:Did you meet your fortune teller - drug dealer
Get it off with no propellor - cut to the chase
What a way to finally smell her - if ur a junkie too u know what he's talkin bout
Pick it up its not to strong - for you
Take a piece and pass it on - you pass blotter pages of LSD around and you rip off a square.

General Comment:in alot of mythology a zephyr is also a healing wind, weather its the love of his healing him, o drugs healing him i believe that zephyr is being used not only as a ship or wind carrying him, but also healing him. and im also leaning towards it being both drugs and love, just me personally though take what u want from my late ass post

General Comment:Ok so here goes. I think he means for his audience to fly away on his zephyr. His zephyr being his music. Whomever wrote these lyrics is a very advanced in what I call enlightenment. References to light are found throughout the chili peppers song. I feel it is an invitation for us to join him on a our journey towards enlightenment. I also believe a lot of the flying in chili peppers songs are about astral travel and he's inviting us to join him. The lyrics are not accurate. It should say "in the water where I center my emotions". This is a reference to the nervous system and in particular the pineal gland in your forehead. The water where you center your emotions is the water around the pineal gland. This is what meditation does. Anyways, as someone who is into Theosophy and meditation and has done a lot of drugs, I assure you that whomever wrote these lyrics is in fact a priest. Not a priest like at your local church, but priest the way Bob Marley, John Lennon, Bob Dylan are priests preaching through their music and changing the world for the better.

General Comment:only reason i think its bout getting high is that 1: lyrics. 2: Anthony even said and i quote "John [Frusciante] and Flea wanted something incredibly, just kind of obscure and psychedelic. Finding true psychedelia in this day and age is really hard to do, because everyone wants to rely on computers and all the stuff that really doesn't know how to find the core of psychedelia. So I had my reservations, but, uh, there are some moments in this video where I think it's captured"

now psychedelia is related to trippin..so maybe its the case, maybe not.
its your interpretation of the song that makes it unique.

General Comment:I think the reason people think it's a drug reference and others think it's a love song is because it's about feeling like he's on drugs when he's with this girl. "Take a piece, it's not to strong-for you" it's the perfect drug, it's not too strong but it keeps him high for days ("Coming down, no not today"). He wants to run away with her and maintain this sense of euphoria forever.
