Take me home, country roads
Almost heaven, West Virginia,
Blue ridge mountain, Shenandoah river,
Life is old there, older than the trees,
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong,
West Virginia,
Mountain mamma,take me home
Country roads

All my memories, gather round her
Modest lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong,
West Virginia,
Mountain mamma, take me home
To the country roads

I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me
Radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road I get a feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong,
West virginia,
Mountain mamma, take me home
Country roads

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong,
West Virginia,
Mountain mamma, take me home
To the country roads

Take me home, that country road
Take me home, that country road

General Comment:Although the song is very stereotyped for West Virginia, and I'm assuming the negative comments have come from those hill folk, or someone here just plain hates the song. and that's fine, but I'd rather listen to this than what you young-ins listen to today.

The song is mostly about wanting to get back home, after being on a tour for a long time. Why West Virginia? Well, EVERY song can't be about Colorado I guess.

General Comment:It's funny because West Virginia is not that great but he opens the song saying it's just like "Heaven." I know whenever I'm away from home long enough I sometimes have those feelings as well, and exaggerate the positive aspects of my hometown. Definitely a song about longing for home, or what used to be home.

General Comment:This is such a beautiful song. It stinks that most other people my age (grade 9) don't usually appreciate the oldies :\

Can someone explain what this means? I work for a Japanese company, and one of my Japanese coworkers asked me....I'm stumped!

General Comment:I love this song. I am one of those college kids that sings this song at the top of my lungs at midnight, it's what we do.
I don't think he means someone has died when it says 'I get the feeling that I should have been home yesterday.' I think it's more like he feels he has stayed away for too long.

General Comment:Its true neither john denver or the songs co writers had been to west virginia, and it certainly shows. the shenandoah river and the blue rige mountains are in western Virginia not west virginia. The blue ridge is the eastern most ridge of the appalachian chain. But he does mention a "miners lady" I would asume to be coal miner which would be charateristic of west virgina's coal fields in the allegheny mountains far to the west of the blue ridge and the shenandoah valley.

General Comment:also where it says "i get a feeling that i should have been home yesterday" i think it means he was going home to visit a loved one who was sick and he didnt make it in time.
