Lyrics for Under Pressure as interpreted by Novartza

Under Pressure Lyrics
Pressure pushing down on me
Pressing down on you no man ask for
Under pressure - that burns a building down, splits a
family in two
Puts people on streets

That's OK
It's the terror of knowing what this world is about
Watching some good friends screaming "Let me out!"
Pray tomorrow - gets me higher
Pressure on people - people on streets
Chippin around - kick my brains around the floor
These are the days it never rains but it pours
People on streets (twice)

It's the terror of knowing what this world is about
Watching some good friends screaming "Let me out!"
Pray tomorrow - gets me higher
Pressure on people - people on streets

Turned away from it all like a blind man
Sat on a fence but it don't work
Keep coming up with love but it's so slashed and torn
Why-why-why
Love
Insanity laughs under pressure we're cracking

Can't we give ourselves one more chance
Why can't we give love that one more chance
Why can't we give love.....
Cause love's such an old fashioned word
And love dares you to care for the people on the edge
of the night
And love dares you to change our way of caring about
ourselves
This is our last dance, this is our last dance
This is ourselves
Under pressure
Under pressure
Pressure

The song actually explain different kind of pressure.
The first verse being about *your* kind of pressure, might it be work life, school life, family life.

That's OK so far. But there is also the pressure of knowing what happens to other people, whom you can't help.

Some of the days are just light gray, some are dark gray. That's why it is so easy to ignore the real big problems. Because we are stuck in our own problems. We can try to solve it with love. Brotherly love. If we give love, we can feel we are humans still.

It's our last chance: what else could we give? Only ignorance is easier to give. To turn away from it all like a blind man.

I was always under the impression that this song was about Gays coming out of the closet. Freddy Mercury (Gay) and David Bowie (Bisexual). And when they say "Watching some good friends screaming "Let me out!". then they are referring to coming out of the closet but they can't because of the pressures of society. And what they are saying is that you don't need to be afraid, just come out because there's no pressure.

I think the song is about the struggle and heartache Mercury endured because of his sexuality and what he and other gay people endure in a world that doesn't always accept them:

"Pressing down on you no man ask for
Under pressure - that burns a building down, splits a
family in two
Puts people on streets"

- could be interpreted literally as homosexuality being something "no man ask for" (i.e. can't "choose" to be gay).....and revealing something like that to a family that doesn't understand could cause splitting of families and the individual being disowned and put on the street.

"That's OK
It's the terror of knowing what this world is about
Watching some good friends screaming "Let me out!"

- could mean he's referencing the first lyric and indicating that he'd rather go through the heartache and trouble of revealing his true self to those loves and suffer their anger and ignorance, than go through the terror of life like some of his gay friends who suffer in silence.

"Turned away from it all like a blind man
Sat on a fence but it don't work"

- he tried to deny his true self by pretending he was something he wasn't, but "it don't work."

"Can't we give ourselves one more chance
Why can't we give love that one more chance
Why can't we give love.....
Cause love's such an old fashioned word
And love dares you to care for the people on the edge"

- here, I think when Mercury is singing about "why can't we give love that one more chance," I think he wants to help his family/friends understand who he is and that he's still the same person, he wants to reconnect to the people he loves - he's saying please love me for who I am

- then David Bowie's lines about "love's such an old fashioned word, etc." his "character" is the voice of Mercury's family/friend/society indicating that they can't accept his homosexuality because it's not their understanding of "proper love." And if they try to give their relationship with Mercury a chance, i.e.: let him back into the fold so-to-speak, they'll be forced or pressured to understand his homosexuality and they're unwilling to give up their fears. I think the latter is meant by the line, "love dares you to care for people on the edge." Maybe "people on the edger" are homosexuals as society sees them.

First of all...to Thinkitbeit..If you weren't too damn lazy to find out when this song was released you would know there was no possible way this was about his Aids.

Secondly...Freddie and David Bowie aren't the only ones who sang on this. It is listed as a Queen and David Bowie song....not a Freddie Mercury and David Bowie Song. Don't forget Roger and Brian's vocal contributions to this song.
aND yES vANIILA iCE SUCKS.

I first thought this song was about suicide and people giving up....

but then I just read the last few lyrics
"
Can't we give ourselves one more chance
Why can't we give love that one more chance
Why can't we give love.....
Cause love's such an old fashioned word
And love dares you to care for the people on the edge
of the night
And love dares you to change our way of caring about
ourselves
This is our last dance, this is our last dance
This is ourselves
Under pressure
Under pressure
Pressure "

AMAZING! I have a new found respect for this song...
maybe because I'm at a point in my life, where I'm ready to love a new woman, but scared shitless about it...hahaa.Perhaps it's a sign?

To me it is about bring back the ideas of the sixties: "Why can't we give love that one more chance?"
"Cause love's such an old fashioned word"
"And love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night"
"And love dares you to change our way of caring about
ourselves"

By the time this was written, the 60s movement had been gone for a while, along with caring for "People on the streets."

its the terror of knowing what this world is about, watching good friends screaming ' let me out '

makes me think hes referring to people wanting to get out of the world , as in suicide and im sure everyone had friends who wanted to commit suicide

NO NO NO.

This song means that it is hard to change for someone when the pressure of the relationship is on. But you have to keep trying. David bowie said that love is such an old fashioned word he is refering to the younger generations that are falling in love with each other and getting bored quick then not being in love. Because love will make you WANT to fit into each others lives. Not from the pressure of being Under Pressure. If you dont want to change for someone you are not in love. It makes you see the entire world differently. and to top it off...to all you fags are here talking about vanilla ice sampling this work of art.... WHO GIVES A SHIT?

Powerful song, why can't we give love that one more chance?

I've heard the Used and MCR version and they just don't have the feeling that was put into the original.

a duet between freddie mercury & david bowie is the stuff of legends. an epic song that relates to my life perfectly right now! ;) i'm a freshman at university, and the pressure rests on me (and other fellow freshmen) pretty literally. "why can't we give love?" is the kind of line that hits me like a thunderbolt, and "this is our last dance" is possibly the best conclusion to a song. gosh, i can't thank mercury (rip) and bowie enough for this song. AMAZING.

This song is about being sexuality ( being gay) as I seen mentioned once in the comments i glanced at.
Burns a building down;splits a family in two; puts people on streets..explains itself there.
Watching some good friends screaming "Let me out!"
- They don't want to accept how they are, but they have to face it.. Mostly this song is about how 'gay people' are not excepted in a 'normal' society. And what the disadvantages of coming out are.
Keep coming up with love but it's so slashed and torn
its tainted love; no one is accepting it. and im pretty sure the rest is self explanitory. Anywho. Great freakn song. love it. I dont care what it means cause its so freakin fantastic

according to bowie, this song is about the boring subject called LOVE :D (so he probably wrote the love parts... just guessing) :D

funny how none wants to take credit of the most recognizeable and most controversial part of the song... the bass riff..
according to john deacon, david bowie created it. according to david, it's already there when he arrived... then brian and roger credited it to john. oh well, i guess it's enough for them to know they made one GREAT song, they don't care who gets the credit... and i guess it's true that imitation is the sincerest/greatest form of flattery, that's why Queen did not wish to get involved when Hollywood records sued vanilla ice.

this song rocks!!!

Queen were vastly overrated and heres one of the prime examples, a boring song so good it was nicked by that multi hit wonder vanilla ice, the bass sends me to sleep after a stressful day at work.

first off, Vanillia Ice toatlly ripped this song off. secondly, this, next to Stairway to Heaven, is one of my most favorite songs just because of the meaning behind it. it talks of growing up "Under pressure" and dealing with it all.
