Lyrics are just so cool, I don't know why. :)
I've only heard the singers make mentioning of their mother, but never their father. So it sounds like he bolted, and his excuse was that he was "incomplete."
And the part where he/she is telling her to hold on tightly to love, I interpret as her parents each sitting her down and talking to her.
I'm probably way off.
But Tegan has used her parents as an example before, once when she was explaining one of her other songs (I know, I know, I know).

About a year ago, there was a very possible chance that I may have been moving to the other side of the country. One night, my girlfriend played this song for me, and it just completely blew me away. I love everything about it :-).

To me, that sounds like the girl she was in love with loved her but Tegan (or Sara, I don't know who wrote this) wasn't "made" for anyone else but herself.
Also, the part about her buying a car to drive to get her girlfriend back is awesome :)
