I don't know if I'm correct or not, but I have been told by people over the years that this song is about Vietnam Vets (in general).
Anyone have any input on this?

From what I could gather with various interviews, the song itself is based on a movie in which a man goes to the future and sees total destruction. He goes back to try to attempt to alter the end of the world, yet the end of the world is caused by his attempt to stop it, and the song is based on his struggle to stop the destruction.
That's what I heard on Ozzy DVD's, I guess you have to read into the lyrics a lot, because it is in no ways obvious.

i dont know, but this is one great song. how can you not love this song. im all into saves the day and thrice and all this emo stuff, but there comes a time when you have to lay on the classic loud stuff, and it doesnt get any better than this.

soma, your on the right track. Its about a man who travels into the future, where he sees the apocalypse. He returns, going through a magnetic storm, where he turns to iron. He tries to warn the people of the apocalypse, but no one listens to him. He decide to have his revenge and he later finds out he was the reason for the apocalypse.

One thing I would like to add; If you play guitar and you learn this song (which everyone should), please learn the whole thing and not just the main riff. I work at a music store, and it pisses everyone who works there off when some punk kid just plays the riff to any Sabbath song and not the rest. If you want to pay homage to the godfathers of metal, learn at least more than the popular part.

This song isn't about the Marvel Iron Man, but a completely different Iron Man that Sabbath made for this song. The song is about a man who travels through time into the future and sees the end of the world. When he goes back in time, he goes through the great magnetic field mentioned in the song, turning him into Iron Man. When he tries to tell the world what will happen, nobody cares becuase he can't talk. Being so enraged by this, he goes on a killing spree, creating the end of the world that he foresaw. A great song! I AM IRON MAN!
