Lyrics for Better Man as interpreted by dsfire

Better Man Lyrics
Waitin', watchin' the clock, it's four o'clock, it's got to stop
Tell him, take no more, she practices her speech
As he opens the door, she rolls over
Pretends to sleep as he looks her over

She lies and says she's in love with him
Can't find a better man
She dreams in color, she dreams in red
Can't find a better manx4

Talkin' to herself, there's no one else who needs to know
She tells herself

Memories back when she was bold and strong
And waiting for the world to come along
Swears she'd do it, now she swears he's gone
She lies and says she's in love with him
Can't find a better man
She dreams in color, she dreams in red
Can't find a better man
She lies and says she still loves him
Can't find a better man
She dreams in color, she dreams in red
Can't find a better manx3

She loved him
She don't want to leave this way
She feeds him
That's why she'll be back again
Can't find a better manx5

I believe this song is about a women in a abusive relationship, realizing she's stupid for staying. But to scared to leave.

i also think its a woman whos been with the same guy for so long that she thinks theres noone else better out there for her. shes just so used to being with him.

i think this songs about eddie vedder's step father also.. i think he might have been abusive...dont quote me on that though.

vedder once introduced this song at a concert by saying "this is for the bastard who married my mama", so yeah, its partly about his mom and step dad

Yeah, it's tied w/ his mom marrying some abusive guy and her too scared to leave. Eddie said he would ask her to leave but she would say "No I can't." (That's what I heard anyway."

This is an awesome song, though horribly sad. I always liked it, but it's recently taken on a deeper meaning to me. There is this girl who is one of my best friends that I always had slightly deeper feelings for. Anyway, she keeps settling for these guys whose league she is far beyond. And when she started to get the impression that I had feelings for her, she withdrew and went back to her self-destructive relationship patterns. Even when an opportunity for true happiness presents itself, she still withdraws. She can't find the better man.

This is my favoritist of many Pearl Jam favorites...

I love this song, because it is sooo true. Sometimes people just don't have the strength left in them to get up and leave..

"She dreams in color, she dreams in red" is my favorite Pearl Jam lyric ever. To me it means that despite the quote-unquote hell she is living through, she can still dream about a love and passion that she deserves, but feels she can't have...

My friend told me that this song summed up her relationship with her bf. I know he doesnt abuse her, but she says she loves him because she doesn't think she can do much better. Like having the best car on the market, but u don't like it all that much but u don't wanna get rid of it cuz it the best. Shitty metaphore but.

i dont think the red part is about love, i think its more about the pain she is living through, not about the love she can still see no matter what, because when you think of pain and being stuck in a hell, you can think about the color red very easily, when he says she dreams in color she dreams in red, its likeat first he wants you to say, oh she dreams in color how happy, but then he says, no all she can dream in is red, and that proves just how bad this relationship is for her, because it is invading her sleep.

I agree with some of you. The song is about a woman in a bad relationship. She's says she will leave him but does not have the strength to do so. And if she does, she will end up going back to him, because she cannot find "A Better Man." Greatly sung by Vedder.

I think the line "She dreams in color, she dreams in red" is just an ironic little line thats saying "She can see everything, once you narrow it down to red." In other words, she can only focus on one man but knows there are others there for her.

maybe since red is an anrgy colour it's about the anger she has stored up inside of her because of him. Or maybe its about her dreaming that one day she will take action since red is the colour of war.

Hmm I dunno about the "she dreams in color she dreams in red" part. I could see how it could be about her anger towards the man. But also, I could see it be about her dreaming of love, since red can also signify love. And how she may one day find true love, but for now she thinks she has no choice but to stay with him.

Great, great, great song. Such beautiful music, and great vocals. And I love the end part where the music speeds up and he says "That's why she'll be back again!" oh fuckin love it!

i love this song soo much... one of my favourite of all time
its just about a woman... too scared to leave this guy..
because she just doesnt want to end up alone
i love the beginning the best
"its got to stop.. tell him.. take no more she practices her speech as he opens the door.. she rolls over.. pretends to sleep as he looks her over"
she was prepared to stand up to him and end it... but then when the moment came she backed down
and about the "she dreams in colour she dreams in red"... i think it does actually mean that she dreams of love... because she doesnt have it in her own life
red has always, traditionally, symbolised love and passion... not blood...
but i could be wrong. everyone is entitled to their own opinions
this song rocks

At first i thought this song was about a girl who really couldnt find a better man. but after looking into it a little more, i think its much deeper. maybe could be showing some inner homosexual emotions, i dunno.... maybe it really fucked eddie up, the whole thing with his stepdad that is. Oh well its a decent song, sounds too much like alot of their other songs though..

Its great how vedder can understand the problems of a battered woman. He describes it from a third peson omniscient perspective , that unless it was a burning issue to him, couldnt have been accomplished. However, i ? how much eddie, as a man, could really understand her plight; I mean hes not the only male who tries to comment on a mans abuse of his wife/gf. [another example is R DOYLES "the woman who walked into doors" which gives a very similar portrait]. I dont think eddie is gay at all but, once again stinkiin fart, LP is not god. they may sound good to u but they cant do everything perfect [they cant even play their own music that well for christs sake].
