Lyrics for Meat Is Murder as interpreted by YtseJam

Meat Is Murder Lyrics
Heifer whines could be human cries
closer comes the screaming knife
this beautiful creature must die
this beautiful creature must die
a death for no reason
and death for no reason is MURDER
and the flesh you so fancifully fry
is not succulent, tasty or nice
it is death for no reason
and death for no reason is MURDER
and the calf that you carve with a smile
is MURDER
and the turkey you festively slice
is MURDER
do you know how animals die ?
kitchen aromas aren't very homely
it's not "comforting", "cheery" or "kind"
it's sizzling blood and the unholy stench
of MURDER
it's not "natural", "normal" or kind
the flesh you so fancifully fry
the meat in your mouth
as you savour the flavour
of MURDER
NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER
NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER
who hears when animals cry ?

Yeah this song is about vegetarianism. And even though I'm not vegitarian I like the some of the ideas behind the lyrics (The industrialization of the food industry for example). Still whenever I listen to it I can't help but start laughing when the Mooing starts at the end. Sorry.

mmmmmm ill aggree to this song one hundred percent.

i know people who say they aggree, but they 'cant help but go back to that wonderful steak'. i tried to eat it again, but guess what? i gagged as soon as it went near my mouth to think that im putting something that was once a part of a live animal.... a beautiful live animal...

god. no one should take advantage of meat.

Worst song in the Smith's catalog, but I can't help singing that line about "savoring the flavor of murder" every time I slice up a nice, juicy New York Strip. The song really stays with you.

I always thought it was impossible to write a good song about animal cruelty (I've tried!). Apparently I was wrong.

This was my theme song for becoming a vegetarian. This and PETA go hand in hand

i'm willing to accept that i am an animal, and that animals eat other animals. its just part of nature, and besides, steak is goooood.

although this song was able to make a lot of people go vegetarian, it also proves that some people seem to stay ignorant forever. i live vegan now for 1 1/2 years, before that i was vegetarian and i am so tired about people talking this bullshit seen above. there is nothing, simply nothing that can justify the murder of animals, who definitely have the same abilities like humans to suffer as much in a physical as in a psychical way.
this song's lyrics are really great. morrissey perfectly describes the disgust that you have when imagining that this piece of meat was an animal that should have a right to live.

the line that really upsets me is "this beautiful creature must die". i can't really see how anyone can listen to this song and not consider becoming a vegetarian.

this song is good as are most smiths songs, but i seriously can't understand how people are so moved by this song or become vegetarian as a result of it. i am a vegetarian (not for animal rights whatsoever, for health and taste reasons), and even being a vegetarian and knowing how disgusting meat is, why?... ask yourself, why succumb to some stupid moral crusade like meat is murder? good song, however, but its pretty damn funny hearing the cow whine at the beginning and end of the song. oh, and you know the song would've been better if johnny marr had more imput, he can usually more effectively counter morrisey's excessive whining.

I was a vegetarian before I heard this song, but I played it for my meat-eating friends to gross them out.

worst song in the Smiths CATALOGUE (spell correctly if you are going to criticise). No its not the worst song they ever performed and that is a fact. Morrissey and Marr both admit that Golden Lights gets said title.

Eating meat is part of nature, becoming a vegetarian is like asking a lion to eat salads for the rest of his days. Although it's true that animals need to get treated better, and not tortured like they are now.

Meat is Murder does preach vegetarianism BUT more importantly and powerfully it actually is Morrissey identifiying with the raising, slaughtering and consumption of defenceless creatures by their superiors...so it can relate to Morrissey himself whilst at school in Manchester, where kids had their brains fried ("heifer whines could be human cries"). It is a metaphor for the violence society wreaks...hence the soldier on the cover of the album with Meat is Murder written on the helmet by Morrissey...The army is another institute of civilised barbarism....another part of the MEAT industry...Morrissey is preoccupied by Institutional Violence

you know, I am a vegetarian and I love the Smiths SO much, and I still think this song is horrible.

Treefinger: Humans, like bears, are omnivorous, so we can survive on just vegetables. Lions, on the other hand, are carnivores and will actually die a miserable death if forced to eat a vegetarian diet.

I know half of you Smiths fans spend your time dreaming about the time you will bump into Mozza and he'll realise you're the sensitive soul-mate he's been avoiding all these years. I have no such dreams however as I know he would hate me because I like cheeseburgers! It's quite strange to admire someone who would loathe you if they met you. Fortunately I know a song about that!

I adore this song. I was vegetarian before hearing it, but it probably would've converted me if not..............Morrissey's great with his lyrics. It's just so heart wrenchingly real....and stuff. I've never found the animal sounds funny, but I did laugh when I just read about other people finding it funny, heehee...Ooh, it's not funny.

I love the video for Morriesseys Everyday Is Like Sunday - the girl has a t-shirt with "I Don't Eat My Friends", plus she writes that postcard with "Meat Is Murder", and stuff...I really do like that video. Girl's a bit TOO miserable, though, I guess.

Interesting that many Smith's Fans have dismissed this song for being melodramatic - such is the power of Morrissey that a fan may be a carnivoure, and hetrosexual, and right-wing but they still followed him..
I always felt the animal and abattoir machinery sounds were needless additions to the song. At the time of its release there were few musical artists known to be vegetarians (Paul McCartney, Chrissie Hinds) let alone singing about it. The song highlighted the subject and allowed adult debate.
The song is hypnotic, a plodding sound, similar to a reggae beat with some wonderful hammering piano chords
