Truth covered in security
I can't let you smother me
I'd like to but it couldn't work
Trading off and taking turns
I don't regret a thing

I've got this friend, you see
Who makes me feel
And I wanted more
Than I could steal
I'll arrest myself
And wear a shield
I'll go out of my way
To prove I still
Smell her on you

Don't, tell me what I wanna hear
Afraid of never knowning fear
Experience anything you need
I'll keep fighting jealousy
Until it's fucking gone

I've got this friend, you see
Who makes me feel
And I wanted more
Than I could steal
I'll arrest myself
And wear a shield
I'll go out of my way
To prove I still
Smell her on you

Truth covered in security
I can't let you smother me
I'd like to but it wouldn't work
Trading off and taking turns
I don't regret a thing

I've got this friend, you see
Who makes me feel
And I wanted more
Than I could steal
I'll arrest myself
And wear a shield
I'll go out of my way
To make you a deal
We've make a pact
To learn from who
Ever we want
Without new rules
We'll share what's lost and what we grew
They'll go out of their way
To prove they still
Smell her on you
They still, smell her on you
Smell her on you

General Comment:What i get out of these lyrics are that he's talking about heroin, "I've got this friend you see who makes me feel, and i wanted more than i could steal" he's talking about getting high and wanting more of it. He wants more to feed his addiction and make him feel good, and "we'll share whats lost and what we grew" i think he's talking about how him and Courtney grew their own poppy plants and them sharing the crop equally among each other. that's what i get out of this song, but hey everyones interpretations are different.

My Opinion:this might not be it, but you know its possible, and just my opinion, but I've read up on my nirvana history pretty well. this sticks out in my mind when i hear this song: kurt cobain and krist novoselic had a bit of a romancish thing going on before kurt met courtney. they made out as the outcome of boredom, and kurt began to like krist more than a friend. the problem? krist was married. so i think kurt wrote this song about that, how they kind of liked each other, but he was not very happy about krist's wife.

"I've got this friend you see who makes me feel"
kurt was manic depressive, and krist wanted him to be happy so thats why they started their relationship, so he might be saying he makes him feel happy

"and i wanted more than i could steal"
    him saying he likes him

"ill go out of my way to prove that i still smell her on you"
like i said kurt was not happy about krist's wife, so he's saying he can smell her on him.

General Comment:This song, in my opinion, is about a guy knowingly lying to himself to avoid the pains of a break up.

The verses some-what implies that he knows where the relationship has gone but he can't accept it(he is smothering himself(the truth covered in security) with lies and he knows it wouldn't work but occasionally does it to forget the pain).

The chorus tells me that he has this "friend" who makes him feel(somebody close or somebody who gives affection) and he wants more of this "affection" but he can't so he has to steal. He knows this is wrong that is why he would arrest himself if he was a cop(shield & arrest). "Smell her on you" - I figured that this could mean that he remembers her.

General Comment:It's about Tobi Vail. He loved her and Courtney hated her. To this day she is still a jealous cow and lies about Tobi.

General Comment:Say what you want about Nevermind as an album, to me this is the finest song. Probably my favourite Nirvana song lyrically, it reeks of jealousy and paints the feeling of pure frustration very well.
Really feels like being on a ship going nowhere, and you can't steer the wheel.
I'll keep fighting jealousy until it's fucking gone.

General Comment:If Kurt killed a cat he did it in a manic episode, and I can guarantee he felt very fucking sorry when the depression kicked in.

I have the exact same mental conditions as Kurt and I've been charactarized as "highly intelligent" my IQ is 130, and I think I can relate to him like few others. This song also describes a past relationship of mine perfectly down to every last sentence.

    anywho, here's my intepretation:

Truth - covered in security : Telling the truth to the extent it's making you look bad.

I can't let you smother me
I'd like to, but it couldn't work : I think this one speaks for itself.

    Trading off and taking turns
I don't regret a thing : Not regretting getting high behind her back?

And I've got this friend, you see
Who makes me feel and I'm
Wanted more than I could steal
    I'll arrest myself, I'll wear a shield
I'll go out of my way to prove I still
I still smell her on you : Drug-euphemism, possibly mary jane. Cops use more resources on
busting addicts than on petty criminals and thieves (wanted
more than I could steal)and he would turn himself in and
tell the cops she's on drugs too and would go out of his way
to prove it. (maybe he had drugs hidden at her place, and/or
Maybe he had smoked weed while wearing her clothes.

Don't - tell me what I wanna hear
Afraid of never knowing fear : Dont give me false hope.

Experience anything you need : This I think is his girlfriend nagging him about wanting to
live her life and experience things while she is young.
    (Fuck other guys)
    I'll keep fighting jealousy
Until it's fucking gone : Bipolar love, no self-respect.

We've made a pact to learn
    from whoever we want
without new rules : Agreeing that they can fuck around, even though she is the only
one who actually wants to. (Don't tell me what I want to hear)

If this does not make sense to you, then you are probably not bipolar, or I am just too stoned to make sense.
