Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting will be close at hand
Don't believe the church and state
And everything they tell you
Believe in me, I'm with the high command

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

There's a gun and ammunition
Just inside the doorway
Use it only in emergency
Better you should pray to God
The Father and the Spirit
Will guide you and protect from up here

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Swear allegiance to the flag
Whatever flag they offer
Never hint at what you really feel
Teach the children quietly
For some day sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Can you hear me running (can you hear me calling you?)
(Can you hear me) hear me calling you?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running babe?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running?
Calling you, calling you

General Comment:I may be waaay off but here is my opinion.
The songwriter, like I, grew up in troubled times. We were raised by parents and
taught by educators who witnessed the holocaust. We went through school during
the height of the cold war. McCarthyism was very prevalent. The belief of the time
was that Communism would not be thrust upon us by violent takeover but by the
silent indoctrination of America’s youth. We studied the Constitution, Declaration of
Independence, and the founding principles of the republic. This study was intense
and was mandatory. We had a Constitution test to advance from 5th grade. We were
tested again in 8th grade and failure to know the material was grounds enough to be
held from advancing to High School. Further education and testing was required for
    High school graduation.
We also witnessed for ourselves the civil unrest during the Vietnam war and the heavy
hand of the government to quash dissent. Our generation feared an all powerful
State. A single, State run, religion was also feared.
They were troubled times and shaped us into what we are today.

Like I said, I may be way off. These are just my views.

General Comment:Don't take any meaning from MTV style videos. Hardly any of them had any relationship to the song. It was a tool for promoting album and for upcomming film makers to try out new techniques. What did Tom Petty's songs have to do with Alice in Wonderland??? Still they were cool and it is stupid that MTV is still known as Music Television when they don't play videos. Should be TTV - Teen TV.

General Comment:The song dates back around 1985. It could be a inspired by the book written by George Orwell's "1984" which forebode a doomsday totalitarian society. A movie with the same name is also based on this book which paints the doomsday world in broad strokes.

General Comment:It doesn't come from a film called "On Dangerous Ground." That's the alternate song name. However, it is a reference to the 1986 movie "Choke Canyon", which, in other countries, is titled "On Dangerous Ground".

Song Meaning:I believe this song deals with future refrences that will occur during the "End Of Times" as mentioned in the Bible in the book of Revolation, and other various books in both the old and New Testement. They mention the dealings with the church and state, and don't believe everything they tell you, as we see happening today. Also it mentions pledging allegiance to the flag, whatever flag they offer; and I believe that they are refering to our country in that aspect, and the loss of freedom we are being faced today. We can see now that people do not respect and have pride in both our flag and our counrty, and we take these freedoms for granted. When we lose the pride we have for our country, then we take our eyes off of what is important, which leads us to our own destruction. That is my interpretation and belief!

Song Meaning:Well. Now it's 2011. There are reports of a FEMA catastrophic earthwuake exercise to be done in the region of the New Madrid fault line in May. Massive bird die-offs and strange en masse flights there recently. Some claim that HAARP is the seret weapon of the U.S.DOD, and is to blame. The U.S. budget deficit is out of control, and respected economists are increasingly talking about the dire consequences of the Congress' bickering and lack of action. The economy is set for a second wave of the 2008 recession, due to ARM schemes that are about to kick in after the first Subprime debacle. Some believe that all of this is being done by design - by the NWO. The last post here was in early 2009, and since then much has happened. If you believe the Bilderberg group exists, and is the shadow Government above all governments, then this song seems way ahead of its time, in relation to the establishment of a tyrranical One World government, which includes sway over media, church, and state. I agree with the last post by Letmein, that the speaker refers to the internal establishment of a dictatorship, and that he is part of an organized resistance about to be put into action.
