When I was younger
I thought the world circled around me
But in time I realized I was wrong
My immortal thoughts turned into just dreams of a dead future
It was a tragic case of my reality

Do you think you're indestructible
And no one can touch you?
Well I think you're disposable
And it's time you knew the truth
Cause it's just one of my lies!

Why does my life have to be so small?
Yet death is forever
And does forever have a life to call its own?

Don't give me an answer cause you
Only know as much as I know
Unless you've been there once
well I hardly think so

I used to pray all night
Before I lay myself down
My mother said it was right
Her mother said it too...
Why?

General Comment:Sounds like he realizes his existence as a human is much smaller than he previously realized. Then he speculates on death, whether there is life after death. He rejects anyone answering him, because who has seen what is after death? Much like Ecclesiastes. He goes into religion a little bit at the end where he mentions that he "used to pray at night". We can infer that he didn't know why he was praying at the time nor now knows why people pray, through his final question, "why?". Instead he realizes he prayed only because his parents taught him to, and in addition questions their reasons.

Theres obvious truth and hope in this song where he declares life as short, and even meaningless, as dreams are just a "dead future". Everyone dies. Yet, he wonders is there more to life than just the here and now? He comes away with no answer, but some sentiment towards how religion is incorrect.

General Comment:Great song, I think its about all the stuff you realize as you get older, as a number have mentioned. Not much you can build on that, so rock on

General Comment:Best Green Day song ever.
I watched a very old gig when they just came out with Kerplunk! and they played this. Before they played it Billie Joe says "This next song is called One Of My Lies. It deals with you realizing your mortal and stuff like that, this songs called "One Of My Lies" *BJ starts raging the power cords.

General Comment:^^i think that's exactly it...

and i like the Holden Caulfield comparison...cuz BJ is often compared to him, but by saying this you prove that he's not exactly the same...
