Lyrics for Do You Remember The First Time? as interpreted by silent jess

Do You Remember The First Time? Lyrics
You say you've got to go home
'Cause he's sitting on his own again this evening
And I know you're gonna let him bore your pants off again
Oh now it's half past eight, you'll be late

You say you've never been sure
Though it makes good sense for you to live together
Still you bought a toy that can reach the places he never goes
And now it's getting late, he's so straight

Do you remember the first time?
I can't remember a worse time
But you know that we've changed so much since then, oh yeah, we've grown
Now I don't care what you're doing, no I don't care if you screw him
Just as long as you save a piece for me, oh yeah
You wanna go home

Well at least there's someone there that you can talk to And you never have to face up to the night on your own
Jesus, it must be great to be straight

Do you remember the first time?
I can't remember a worse time
But you know that we've changed so much since then, oh yeah, we've grown
Now I don't care what you're doing, no I don't care if you screw him
Just as long as you save a piece for me, oh yeah
You wanna go home..
[repeat]

You all are probably right about the meaning of "straight" in this song, but that's not going to stop me thinking of this as a lesbian talking to her first teenage romance who later went on to be straight.

Way more interesting.

Firstly, the "straight" in this song has nothing to do with sexual orientation. It's to do with having a "straight" or dull personality (in the guys opinion).

Though, it could actually be a girl singing, and her ex-girlfriend turned out to be straight.

I dont agree wtih you guys. I think the song is about him with this chick. the line i dont remeber a worse doesn't nessiceraly mean it was bad he's just saying it got better and better. and now that they're through she gets better sex with a dildo then her husband casue he's so "straight" or boring. I looovee this song and i know for a fact my first time wasn't bad but it got better and better and better everytime =]]

JEmma.Daisy your first comment was hilarious!!!! Anyway Jarvis Cocker is a lyrical genius and is still super sexy with his electric elbows and razor sharp wit.
This chick is cheating on mighty fine Jarvis with her husband.. a total square. He resents cause deep down he Really wishes he was with him, but since she's not... at least she can be before it's 8.

also, it seems to be a bit about growing up and losing the illusion/ideal of love.
He used to want this girl to leave her boyfriend and fall in love with him, but now he sees that love isn't like that and there's all kinds of practicality involved.

basically:

i know the first time we had sex it was shit but we've both grown up now and i think we should do it again. When I'm alone at night and you're with your boyfriend I wish that I was more stable like he is, but looking at the situation as a whole I'm pretty glad I'm not. I just wish that you'd see how much better I am than him and leave him.

i know i used to complain about you being with him all the time and i still think he's a boring twat but, you know what, I'd rather share you with him than not have you at all. I'll settle for just a piece of you.

I think everyone's been pretty spot on so far.
Basically saying the first time we had sex was pretty crappy but we've both gotten alot better/had more practice. You're boyfriend's really boring but he's more stable than i am so i get why youre with him, but said very sarcastically, of course.
Part of me feels like he's not sleeping with her, and maybe it's like the song is his attempt to get her to sleep with him again even though she's seeing someone else, because the saying she's going to be late makes me think that there somewhere together but havent necessarily slept together yet, but save a piece for me makes me think that they are, so i'm not sure, i think it's probably supposed to be ambiguous
also it's definitely implied that the boyfriend doesn't really meaure up, the toy that reaches the place that he's never been and i think maybe the "we've grown" part is implying more than just emotional growth...

thrill seeks the security that will inevitably return home to offer it to someone else...; ouch. maybe that's what they need to get it for themselves.

mutual abuse. nice.

I'm with Marcus7 (and samadriel). It's jubilant because, although there's a horror in 'facing the night on your own', would you rather be the straight guy that never reaches the places she wants to go?

Nah, 'dont...' you got it right first time. In addition he also envies the security she has at night because she doesn't have to face a lonely night like he does.

I think i'm wrong with my comment above i recently bought the Pulp Hits DVD and there's a documentry which has interviews with celebrities about loosing there virginity with the same title, so i think it;s just about him feeling bitter towards the girl he lost it to.

I recon this about jarvis having an affair with a woman, who goes back to her husband every night. He doesn't care if she's still sleeping with him as long she saves a piece for him. He's remembering the first time they had sex, which would have been awkward and guilt ridden so it was the worse time. that's just my oppinion, could be wrong.

'Straight', as Jarvis uses it, tends to have a meaning more like 'square', or otherwise un-groovy. 'it must be great to be straight', in this context, would refer to his envying the security that she feels, now that her life has become more dull and routine after settling down.

This song is about encountering an ex- I think we can safely say that.

The lines "he's so straight" and "Jesus, it must be great to be straight ", lead me to believe she left the narrator because of his sexual orrientation.
