Lyrics for Sad Lisa as interpreted by Novartza

Sad Lisa Lyrics
She hangs her head and cries in my shirt,
she must be hurt very badly,
Tell me what's making you sadly.
Open your door, don't hide in the dark,
you're lost in the dark, you can trust me,
'cause you know that's how it must be,

Lisa Lisa, sad Lisa Lisa.
Her eyes like windows,
tricklin' rain upon her pain, getting deeper
though my love wants to relieve her.
She walks alone from wall to wall, lost in a hall,
she can't hear me, though I know she likes to be near me,

Lisa Lisa, sad Lisa Lisa.
She sits in a corner by the door.
There must be more I can tell her.
If she really wants me to help her,
I'll do what I can to show her the way,
and maybe one day I will free her,
'though I know no one can see her.

Lisa Lisa, sad Lisa,
Lisa Lisa, sad Lisa Lisa.

The first 30 times I heard it I found it such a sad but in the mean time oh so beautiful song. I wished someone would sing those words to me, I wished I had such a friend. Now I have what I wanted then but I still recognize myself in Lisa from time to time...

This song sounds like to me that he feels bad for this girl. He wants to help her but there is no way to help her unless he was dead his self. To me it sounds like she had done something to where she is stuck in purgatory for a sin that she has committed ... maybe suicide. The part in the song where he says
"I'll do what I can to show her the way,
and maybe one day I will free her,
'though I know no one can see her."
That gives me hint that she is not alive and he is the only one that can see her either because she is a ghost or she is just in his mind. Either way the song is very sad and the meaning is unclear. you can only interpret what you think it is and that is what I hear when I listen to this song.

This is SUCH a beautiful song. This song reminds me of when I was depressed, which I was for years and years, and everytime I'm sad again, or someone's wronged me I listen to this and brings back memories of old pain, and I know it may seem a little odd but it feels good to remember times like those, just cos I got through them. But now I'm just rambling :p lol. I love the way he uses a kind of pun...dunno if anyone else noticed it. "Her eyes like windows, trickling rain, upon her pain getting deeper", pain could also be seen as window PANE.

Anyway, this song makes me cry. My mom played it to me when..well something really bad had happened to me, something I couldn't tell ANYONE about, and I kept holding it back and then one night I just sat with her and cryed on her shoulder. I still couldn't tell her, but I think she could relate this song perfectly then. "Open the door, don't hide in the dark" "Tell me what's making you Sadly"

This is just the ultimate song for deep and beautiful sadness. If you could call it that.

This is the most beautiful song. I first heard it about 3am coz i put this album on when i was going to sleep, then had it so it repeated the entire album over and over. I woke up and heard the piano and freaked out coz i didnt know where it was coming from. But I loved it from the minute i heard it

"Open your door, don't hide in the dark,"
"Her eyes like windows,
tricklin' rain upon her pain, getting deeper"
"She walks alone from wall to wall, lost in a hall,"

They are my 3 favourite lines. I love this song and Cat Stevens is a legend

"Though I know no one can see her" might meen that nobody sees her the way she really is.
He is the only one who actually knows her, this fits with the "open the door, don't hide in the dark" part.

Strange, I always assumed this song was about his dog, and I see here nobody thinks so.

The line "She sits in a corner by the door" makes me think of a dog sitting on the floor by the door.

"she can't hear me, though I know she likes to be near me" doesn't seem to refer to a human being, but to a dog that cannot understand language, but loves its owner.

"you can trust me, 'cause you know that's how it must be" seems to me like he's talking about someone who is not his equal, someone that completely depends on him.

And using sad eyes to get whatever they want is something that dogs are experts in.

And I agree about "Though I know no one can see her" meaning that nobody sees her the way she really is to him, since many people don't see dogs as being deserving love.

Great song, whatever the "true" meaning is.

I think Loial was right that Stevens wrote it for his dog, but it can apply to humanity just as easily as his dog. But this song is just purely beautiful.

this is one of the most beautiful song i have ever herd. i could listen to it over and over. i can relate to it sometimes, i think alot of people can. i can remember me in the car with my family, them saying something like " ok we are going to listen to a mama and daddy tape" and me and my sister would sortof groan, we didnt like the music they played when we were small, but then they put on cat stevens, and we really liked his music :). and now that im older i really love his music. plus i share the same birthday as him! 21 july. i think its about this girl he knows, secretly loves, but she is to deep in her depression.

This song is about and autistic girl, his sister.
No one sees her, means everyone lese has stopped trying.
She is locked in an institutuion. Only he comes to visit any more. She know he is all she has left, but cant reach out to him.

This song always makes me think of my mother. Her life has never been a bed of roses. She was badly abused in her youth (and then again throughout her married life) and, just like many other women, she felt she couldn't tell anyone about it. My feelings are exactly the same as those of the speaker in the song and, well, I listen to it and it's just as if it had been written for her...only her name is not Lisa, but Theresa.
My favourite part:
'There must be more I can tell her
If she really wants me to help her
I'll do what I can to show her the way
And maybe one day I will free her'

Such is my hope.

Several years ago I saw a movie about a psychiatric disabled girl (depessed or authistic) in which this song was an underlying theme. I don't recall the title, but i have loved the song ever since.

David and Lisa was the movie. And yes, that was the basis for the song.

Goodness. This song's so beautiful.

This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It seriously made me cry the first time I heard it. Not to mention my name is Lisa so it makes it that much better...

I always thought of this song as the third in a trilogy on the album. First is "Hard headed Woman" where he is looking for the woman of his dreams; then is "Wild World" where it seems he has found her but now she wants to leave and explore the world outside and he is warning her and then this song, "Sad Lisa" where she returns a broken person. It is very sad. I was always drawn to this album because these songs seemed so connected.

I just love how the piano comes „trickling rain“ into the song.

“There must be more I can tell her”
this helplessness can ruin a man. wanting so much to ease her pain, but not being able to help. it destroys you.

one very subjective comment:
the melody that goes with the line “Though I know no one can see her” always had me picturing the singer smiling. some smug smile perhaps, knowing that he is the only one.

@ RWaters:
nice one. “no one can see her” the way he does, because he knows her very well and can look into her heart.

@ Loail:
you let your dog cry in your shirt? ugh, that’s gross…

I think the lyric is "sad, Li" and not "sadly". The first is an affectionate short name for Lisa and the second is just messed up English.
