Broad is the sea
The salt enters the wound
My take on you is simple

So heal (here)
You're free
To hear (hear)
You're free

Time spent waiting off shore
The calm before the storm
My take from you is simple

So here (here)
You're free
To hear (hear)
You're free

You're such a comfortable liar
You're such a comfortable liar
You're such a comfortable liar
You're such a comfortable liar
You're such a comfortable liar

You're so calm
Cause I said wrong
You comfortable liar
You comfortable liar
You comfortable liar
You comfortable liar
Liar

Song Meaning:For me, this song is about knowing someone is a liar, and then calling that person out.
    "Broad is the Sea"
-Pete recognizes a liar and the liar's sea of lies

    "the salt enters the wound"
-if you have a sea of lies, some salt is going to enter people's wounds..kind of like lies adversely affecting relationships

"my take on you is simple".....
    .....your a comfortable liar

    "so heal here you're free"
-Pete watches the liar feeling free because he/she has lied and no one knows. the liar feels free because of the illusion that the lies have made

    "time spent waiting offshore"
-Pete maybe enters a relationship with said liar or at least stays around them and avoiding the problem and confrontation

    "the calm before the storm"
-Pete notices everything is calm for the liar because he/she doesn't know that they will be called out,

he repeats how the liar is free and then calls them out...

    "you comfortable liar"
the phrase is so compelling because it shows how the liar has had time to establish themself with a sea of lies, becoming something that they are not

    "your so calm"
-his anger begins to mount as the liar seems so content

    "CAUSE I SAID WRONG"
-calls out the liar and chaos ensues, just like he said it would when he said "the calm before the storm"

I feel like I recognize what he says here because I can relate with the liar and have always been nervously anticipating the storm

General Comment:What I get out of this song....

Broad is this sea, (a long term of lying)
The salt enters the wounds, (everything is starting to kick in, more painful lies are told)
My take on you is simple, (Pete already can see "she" is a liar, and is good at it)

So heal your fear (calm down and relax. The worst is already done)
    To heal your fear

Time spent waiting offshore, (a long term waiting in a sea of lies, looking for truth)
The calm before the storm, (things start getting worse suddenly)
My take from you is simple, (similar as to above)

You're such a comfortable liar, (Whoever Pete is talking about, that person has no problem lying to get away with things)

    So calm, (barely noticable)

Cause I said WRONG! (He isn't gonna put up with the bullshit anymore)

General Comment:The sea symbolizes the social interactions that the subject experiences, and the salt entering the wounds is the hurt this person experiences on a daily basis. Constantly and pervasively, actually. Lying is the subject's self defense against these injuries. Someone who lies constantly becomes very comfortable with lying.

General Comment:Sounds like someone really wants to do something but is scared to because they had a bad experience with it before "salt enters wound... Waiting offshore" and he's saying you can't just wait until your fear fades, you need to face it yourself "heal your fears to heal your fears" then maybe the person is saying there's about to be a storm or something bad so I'll wait "time spent waiting offshore the calm before the storm" but the person is just using that as an excuse to stay away from what he fears, staying in his comfort zone, making him a comfortable liar.

General Comment:What the fuck guitaranalyzer55? You call Chevelle bullshit nonsense?

May I first say that you are purely unintelligent and have obviously very shit knowledge of what good music is (if you think Chevelle are nonsense).

Secondly, if this song is nonsense - then I doubt you are capable of playing guitar any better than Pete Loeffler since you only analyze them. Prove that you can play guitar better than Pete and maybe I can sympathise - actually, don't it'll be a waste of your time considering you probably think Avenged Sevenfold is "kickass metal".

    FUN FACT: A7X are boooooring!

And I couldn't help noticing that you said Chevelle should "settle down and find a new job". Well mate, firstly they get paid a lot for simply being in the music business; and they happen to be one of the most successful alternative metal acts (just look at their sales) and how three family members can produce such a badass sound in basically all of their songs is something which loyal fans would admire. Just listen to the riff of "Family System" and I dare you to tell me that that song is poor...

So if I were you I'd save your comments for people who actually agree with you - because you're just weaving yourself a tangled web. Just appreciate more music, mate. Anyway I've said enough...

P.S My interpretation of this song has already been said basically. May I also add that it's a damn good song as well

General Comment:First off, this is certainly one of my favourite chevelle songs in terms of the crushing riffs to the sheer emotional intensity that is so lavishly spread out.Ok now for the meaning…seems like a troubled relationship in a way. the salts enters the wounds, the lies that hurt more and more but this is because he/she fears something will happen if the truth is known *so heal your fear* well you can’t since your in this state where your fear controls every motion and action that you do. The calm before the storm , before the shit hits the fan *your such a comfortable liar*but that’s alright I can still keep this going a few more times.Repetition is seriously put to great use in this song.I must have heard Pete Loeffler say you’re such a comfortable liar at least 500+ times now and im still not sick of it.

General Comment:I agree with so many before me,

This CD is mainly about Relationships.
The life of these three brothers and what went on at home, behind closed doors.
A lot of the writing is dealing with an abusive relationship (in this case their parents, more so their father.) and their anger, and how they dealt with it.

I – like others - can relate alot to what Sam has written. They are great musicians and I am blown away by their positivity through seeming darkness at home and in life.
Because of this positiveness, some may see them as Christian messages, as with all music and writings you can read anything into it if you desire to do so. You must take the good out of it, and leave the rest for the writer to deal with. – don’t however; go through life pushing your beliefs onto me or anyone for the matter.

Chevelle were marketed as a Christian band at one time, they are not “Christian”.

Can we please drop this discussion?
I love the band and I really hope the best for them.
I want to enjoy it just as much as anyone else.
Please don’t ruin it for everyone, trying to read YOUR messages into THEIR music.

    **End of Rant**
    peace. laterrr.

General Comment:I thought it was pretty cool when I saw them back in June and Pete said at one point in the song, "She's such a comfortable liar."
