The Reflex
The Reflex
The Reflex

You've gone too far this time
And I'm dancing on the valentine
I tell you somebody's fooling around
With my chances on the danger line
I'll cross that bridge when I find it
Another day
To make my stand
High time is no time for deciding
If I should find a helping hand

Why don't you use it?
Try not to bruise it?
Buy time don't loose it

Why don't you use it?
Try not to bruise it?
Buy time don't loose it

The reflex is a lonely child
Who's waiting by the park
The reflex is a door to finding
Treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover
Isn't that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does
Must be answered with a question mark

I'm on a ride and I want to get off
But they won't slow down the round-about
I sold the radio and T.V. set
Don't want to be around when this gets out

Why don't you use it?

The reflex is a lonely child
Who's waiting by the park
The reflex is a door to finding
Treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover
Isn't that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does
Must be answered with a question mark

Why don't you use it?
Try not to bruise it?
Buy time don't loose it

The reflex is a lonely child
Who's waiting by the park
The reflex is a door to finding
Treasure in the dark
And watching over lucky clover
Isn't that bizarre
Every little thing the reflex does
Must be answered with a question mark

General Comment:Read the song with "teenage erection" in mind (well so to speak), and see how much of it makes sense. Then reconsider why Simon Le Bon said he doesn't know what it means, or that it's about a "friend they all lost"!
Made a lot of sense to me.

General Comment:I think one of the meanings is about gaining confidence. It says "I'll cross that bridge when I find it. Another day to make my stand." I think he means that when he finds what he's looking for-his confidence-he'll challenge his fear.
It says So "Why don't you use it? Try not to bruise it. Buy time don't lose it." I think this bit means that someone wants him to hurry up and make up his mind and gain his confidence quicker, but he's saying that if you do something to quickly it'll get spoilt.
It also says "I'm on a ride and I want to get off. But they won't slow down the roundabout. I sold the Renoir and the TV set. Don't want to be around when this gets out." I think this means he tried to sell his things for confidence-or whatever he's looking for-but he doesn't want anyone to know.:)

General Comment:I always thought previously that the lyrics sounded a complete load of nonsense when hearing the song, but reading them, I think there is a deliberate meaning, even if Simon le Bon didn't think about the song for too long: the "reflex" is about his inspiration, muse or philosophy, which is based on living for today, optimism (the lucky clover), taking risks, mystery (hiding all the cards), living the high life (he needed to sell the Renoir and the TV set), sex (treasure in the dark), some bright-eyed innocence (the only child in the park) and relying on reflex action rather than dwelling too long on things or being cautious.

General Comment:Probably Duran Duran's biggest ever hit, but is it certainly not one of their best! Yuk!

My Opinion:Someone earlier said that this song had no meaning. They were probably right. Trying to analyze this song is like reading Alice in Wonderland you just don't get anything out of it. Psycho-babble nothing more.

General Comment:I agree with topazbluegirl, this is about drugs.

"You've gone too far this time" > as somebody telling him to stop doing it.
But I'm dancing on the valentine > he cares, but he's just too high.

Also the whole verse about being on a ride and selling stuff is a sign too.

General Comment:I was a huge Duran Duran fan but I have never liked this song as the lyrics are just rubbish and don't make any sense. I see Kylie Minogue has made a remake of it and most of her songs are rubbish too. I don't understand why it was such a big hit. But I logged on to see what other people made of the lyrics and I thank you for your insight.

General Comment:I think it's "lonely child." It's about inspiration.
