I always thought this song was about trying to find a a partner or sex partner. Kind of like when your at a club or bar and trying to find someone to sleep with, you're on the hunt and you're hungry for sex like a wolf is hungry for prey.

The song is more about someone trying to complete a mission. In doing so, he becomes frantic as he finds obstacles and cannot control the beast within.

Aside from that, this is one of the first Duran Duran songs I ever heard and was instantly swept away with the awesome beat and sound. It is truly a song one must hear to fully enjoy.

The funny thing with these songs are that they use similies rather than metaphors but the similes I don't think are meant to be at the heart of the song, like with Rio being primarily about America, not a river. The same works here I think.

I've read that this song was inspired by Jim Morrison's whole aura. But anyway, I also notice how this title is used all the time in Duran Duran articles, about how they're hungry for fame. And I think that's maybe what the song is about, besides just being about a love affair. There is a line in the song "burning the ground, I break from the crowd". Now I'm not quite sure what "burning the ground" is referring to. I've heard it used in context with the harvest and in Duran Duran's video "Burning the Ground" they show fiery forests in the background which seems to be a reference to the burning down of forests, actually. But they made that video at a time when their lineup had undergone a change but also they were heading into a new decade so it was like a fresh start. I see the meaning in the song as being they're burning the ground on which the previous bands grew from and clearing the way for themselves. And so I see that as being what the wolf symbolizes, not so much being hungry as but as a force that desecrates something. I don't think Duran Duran saw it as a bad thing but I'm sure many were horrified at the idea of the band taking over.

Oh yeah, and the video was kind of interesting to watch for this song. Like where Simon gets scratched near the end. It's interesting because he's the pursuer, he claims he's the one on the hunt like a wolf and yet he is also the pursued. It also reminds me of that scene in the beginning of the extended version of Wild Boys where Simon throws his head to the side as if he's been bitten by a vampire or something. I know they've got the vampires coming in later in that video. Duran Duran is big on vampires and zombie images I think and being pursued and turned into monsters.

This is my favourite Duran song. Brilliantly written. I think it's about oral sex.

"Straddle the line in discord and rhyme"
a metaphor for sexual play.

"Mouth is alive with juices like wine"
Her vaginal fluids in Simon's mouth.

Originally, this song creeped me out because I thought it was about a stalker. The sound of the woman breathing at the beginning of the song originally sounded like someone panting from fear. I guess she could be aroused, though. I really like Anthony's interpretation.
