Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please

Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven

General Comment:Eric Clapton had written this song because his son (which was a toddler), had fallen out of a window because his maid had accidentally left the window open, and he passed away. He wrote this song for encouragement, saying "Beyond the gates, there's peace I'm sure", he is trying to encourage himself in saying that his son is living the perfect life in heaven.
And him asking the questions such as "would you know my name", because his son was just so young, he wasn't sure if he'd even remember him.
This song can be both sad and really encouraging. :)

General Comment:This is coming from someone who is not a big Eric Clapton fan so I hope that registers with people here. I love this song. It's moving and to me I think it is a great song. I am currently learning to play the guitar and I hope that one day I will be a good enough guitar player to do this song justice.

General Comment:One of the most beautiful (and beautifully sad) songs ever written by a musical great. He misses his son (it's obvious from his emotion in the song) but knows his child is safe and at peace in Heaven...a place he's not ready to enter yet but where he will one day join him. Faith is a remarkable strength...

Memory:This song perfectly relates to us ( Me & my family). I lost my second son about 8 months ago. He survived for just a few minutes right after he was brought into this world. None of us had the chance to see him when he was alive. Every time I listen to this song, I remember him and what comforts me and my family is, the assurance that he is in heaven.

This song brings tears to my eyes every time no matter how hard I try not to cry... I don't think a better song has ever been written to express the feeling of unexpectedly losing a loved one before their time. This song is beautiful and heartwrenching at the same time.

General Comment:i read that his son fell out of the window of his mom's friend's apartment of the 53rd floor, but that might be totally wrong.

what i DO know is that Clapton is his real surname NOT a stage name. His grandmothers first husband was Clapton, so when she remarried, her daughter kept that name. The 2nd husband's last name was Clapp through so they are freakishly similar.

Memory:This song is brilliant. I agree that the emotion is what makes it soo beautiful. I've read that Eric wrote it about his son, who passed away at a young age. I'm yet to cry listening to it, but whenever I hear it I think about a close friend I lost last year to cancer...we had a huge, stupid fight a few years ago before I moved to Australia. We made up before I left, and we emailed, we snail-mailed and we called each other. Sent gifts on holidays. So last year when she was diagnosed I was...messed up for a long time. And after she passed away in December I got even worse. Thinking how I wasn't there for her when she needed support the most...

This song makes me think of how I didn't get to say goodbye, and if she remembered all of our memories together, if she read all the posts I put on her site that updated us about her condition...She was 16 years old when she died. Surrounded by her family, I feel blessed to have known her. She was amazing...a 3 sport athlete, a brilliant mind. Top in all of her classes. Strong, she went to school..even when she had a full week of radiation. I think of her everyday, it's been 7 months now and I'm beginning to accept that I did do everything I could have at the time......and a lot more.

Sorry about the long comment/story. But this song really gets to me...
