Lyrics for Friend Of A Friend as interpreted by berserker

Friend Of A Friend Lyrics
he needs a quiet room
with a lock to keep him
in its just a quiet room
and hes there
he plays an old guitar
with a coin found by the phone
it was his friends guitar
that he played
hmm mmm mmm
hes never been in love
but he knows just what love is
he says nevermind
and no one speaks
he thinks he drinks too much
cause when he tells his two best friends
i think i drink too much
no one speaks
no one speaks
no one speaks
hmm hmm mmm mmm mmm hmm hmm mmm
he plays an old guitar
with a coin found by the phone
it was his friends guitar
that he played
when he plays
no one speaks
no one speaks
and he plays
no one speaks

beaultiful song! You can feel how this guy is lonely, quiet and just want a quiet room, a guitar and a beer... his friends know that doesn't advance to give advices to him beacause he just doesn't care...hehe
Dave Grohl is the best...:)

I think I'm right in saying that this will be appearing on the acoustic cd of In Your Honour? I hope it will be a re-recorded one. Not that this one isn't awexome, but you never know if things can be made better..

"Yes, I'd just moved in with Kurt. I didn't know anybody. I had a drum set packed in one box and flew up there. I would stay up till the sun came up and sleep all day. Olympia, Washington, is f**king depressing enough and I was living with this person that I didn't know. But he had a four-track so I wrote songs: Marigold and Friend Of A Friend. It was an observation of Kurt and Krist and I." - Dave Grohl

I had a feeling when I first heard this song a few years ago that it was about himself, Kurt and Krist. I suppose that makes sense.

According to an interview for IYH, I guess this was the first song that he wrote on the acoustic with lyrics. I'm really happy that it made it onto an album finally after 15 or so years.

great song, I love it.

This is a great acoustic song, very mellow, and it's beautiful. It describes his relationship well with Kurt and Krist. I'm very happy to see this on the new album.

One of the best songs on the new album. When I told my friend I thought this was about Kurt and Krist he laughed like there was no tomorrow. But then he actually took a minute to listen to the lyrics and was like 'You know, I think you're right!'

I think this song is about kurt cobain, you get the strongest sense of kurt in the accoustic recording. "He's never been in love, but he knows just what love is.. He said nevermind, and noone speaks". This song is haunting and depressing and mournful. When i heard it i cried. The accoustic recording in my opinion is very much in kurt's memory.

Great accoustic song by dave!!! I think it is deffently about kurt.... lil question tho.... kurt did drink much? he was hard on drugs but hardly ever drank... krist did tho. So do you think that part is about krist? like the song is divided in sections. like the first verse is kurt and the second krist? but i would think the "he says nevermind" part should be with kurt.... got to much damn time on my hands. GREAT SONG THOUGH!!!!

This song actually IS about Kurt Cobain for a change... As opposed to all the others that everyone assumes are about him...

It's an awesome song and nice to see it on an album some 15 years after it was originally written.

Hmmm.. I think the song really isn't about Kurt. If you read the quote posted by srnicek, it become quite clear that it is about Grohl, himself. Kurt and company are the "friends" the song speaks of. Grohl was lonely and sad being so far from home.

Dave Grohl admitted to Rolling Stone that it was about relationships concerning himself Krist Novesellic and Kurt Cobain

I think the meaning of the song is clear. It reminds me of nirvana unplugged, it sounds like Kurt’s playing the guitar. It’s quite emotional.

The song is very haunting, I don't know what it's about. All of the information Ive read says that it's about Dave himself, but if you throw Kurt into the picture and just realise how amazing he was....

"He needs a quiet room
with a lock to keep him
in its just a quiet room"
This line makes me think of Kurt's study, which was basically a closet where he could keep to himself and work on guitar riffs...

" when he plays no one speaks"
This line seems to mean that whenever whoever plays, it is a very special occasion that no one wants to miss,

And of course the line

"he says nevermind
and no one speaks"
Nevermind was the name of one of Nirvana's biggest selling album

I think this song was an intimate look at the innards of Nirvana...........

This song is so soothing...

Dave Grohl said this was about Kurt Cobain, he wrote it when he first joined the band.

Along with the fact that this was written when Kurt joined the band, I personally think the song is just how you're lonely at times and saying how you'll do whatever you can just to do the things you love.

"it was his friends guitar
that he played"

People don't give the acoustic disc enough credit. It's very deep and spiritual. I know how Dave Grohl says it's about Kurt, but I interpret it differently. I think of it as someone who has been kept quiet for such a long time that it is tearing him apart, and the lock that keeps him in is him being oppressed because he will go berserk if he is let out. He drowns his thoughts and worries in alcohol and is afraid to get something of his own so he uses his friend's possesions. He is self-conscious but doesn't talk too much because he is so withdrawn. He doesn't have a will to connect with anyone else, so when he is with his "friends" it is incredibly awkward and silent. His friends aren't very good because they don't help him with his problems, they just don't speak. He is too afraid to be in love with anyone so he stays silent and withdrawn from anyone else...forever

i get how it could be about kurt, but davey wrote this when he first joined nirvana, when they wernt HUGE just yet, and kurt didnt go nuts til they were huge. anyway, nirvana hadnt written nevermind at that point, they were stil on bleach, so i dont think that bit is about kurt and stuff. still a mindblowing song.

This song is obviously about Cobain...

This song is very haunting...

The music sounds like a slowed-down "Big Me", doesn't it?
