This song was originally about Townshend himself, when he came to Australia and couldn't believe that the first girl he chatted up also followed Meher Baba. The coincidence shocked him and he equated that with Tommy's reaction when his sight, speech and hearing are restored. Tommy now believes himself to be some kind of messiah, which dictates the rest of the plot.
