I don't know where
I'm gonna live
Don't know if I'll find a place
I'd have to think about it some
Amd that I do not wish to face
I guess that I'm counting on his
Divine intervention

I cannot understand my god
I don't know why it gets to me
One day my life
Is filled with joy
And then we find we disagree
All depending on his
Divine intervention

Alright
We're all counting on his...

Does he love us?
Does he love us?
Does he love us?
Does he love us?
Hmm now he love us?
I look around
And all I see is destruction
We're all counting on his
Divine intervention

When he comes the sun shine
When he comes the sun shine
Sunshine, the sunshine
Here it comes...

Song Meaning:This song is about the end of Matthews 1st marriage. She ended it, not him, he is in limbo and is questioning "my god" because he took the vow of marriage and it did not work out. Everything that he thought was going "to be" for the rest of his life is turned upside down.
The entire Girlfriend album is about the demise of his 1st marriage and falling in love with Lisa, his 2nd and final marriage.

General Comment:Sweet is just questioning his faith. It's as simple as that.

General Comment:I agree with the first post
Brodie, I also believe that the line you quoted from Evangeline is not about him believing in god but more about letting 'Evangeline' think they have more in common so that perhaps he can sway her to sleep with him

General Comment:Ah, my bad. Matthew dosn't believe in God "in the old sense" he believes in nature.

    General Comment:*Lines in question*

And every night I bow to pray
But I'll feel a whole lot better
    Once you're coming my way

General Comment:Not that I disagree wit you musicgenius, but how do you know Matthew is an Atheist? I don't think Matt would poke fun at someone else's religion. Also, there are lines in Evangeline that make me believe Mr. Sweet believes in something. Whether or not it's God, I don't know.

General Comment:unfortunantly the first poster is probabaly correct. I myself am a BELIEVER. but Matthew Sweet is an Athiest. So I am assuming he is sort of making fun of us Christians.

General Comment:I completely disagree with the above poster. This isn't being sarcastic. This is being honest. All of us have doubted faith at one point in life. In the first stanza, he has lost everything. Without a home you have nothing. The only thing that could save him at this point is Divine Intervention.

Second Stanza is more of the same. One day everything is good, and then it all falls apart. What kind of God would let this happen?

Third verse is even worse. Now serious doubt has taken place. You can imagine a child asking a question like "If God really exists, why does he let people die?". Same concept here. If there is a God why does bad things happen...

But then the final verse....Finally we remember our faith and our love in God. He is there and the sun is shining again in our lives. Yes there is destruction. Yes there are problems. But God shines his love and light on us still!

Its very uplifting! And I think its important to note that this God doesn't necessarily have to be Yahweh. Maybe this God is Vishnu. Maybe Allah. Maybe Jesus......Its not important what God it is......just have faith!
