They painted up your secrets
With the lies they told you
And the least they ever gave you
Was the most you ever knew

And I wonder where these dreams go
When the world gets in your way
What's the point in all this screaming
No one's listening anyway

Your voice is small and fading
And you hide in here unknown
And your mother loves your father
'Cause she's got nowhere to go

And she wonders where these dreams go
'Cause the world got in her way
What's the point in ever trying
Nothing's changing anyway

They press their lips against you
And you love the lies they say
And I tried so hard to reach you
But you're falling anyway

And you know I see right through you
When the world gets in your way
What's the point in all the screaming
You're not listening anyway

General Comment:I think this song is about John's upbringing. Both his parents died when he was 16. His father was an alcoholic, not a good person. His mom stayed with his dad even though he wasn't a good person and things didn't change. And whenever something bad would happen, they'd tell little Johnny (their youngest child) lies so that he would not be scared. He grew up to realize what really went on when he was a little kid that didn't know. I think this song is John as an adult explaining to himself as a kid what was really happening in his life as well as his mom's and sisters etc. so that he wouldn't have fake perceptions of reality.

My Interpretation:Beautiful song. I could interpret this song verse for verse, but I don't need to. Ultimately the message is simply one big "FUCK IT", to put it succinctly.

General Comment:Oh my gosh, my friend sent this song to me years ago when I was a lot younger and my mom had just been diagnosed with cancer. I was depressed and suicidal because of all the changes and he was the only person I really confided in. I always enjoyed the lyrics of this song and it had this weird soothing effect on me sometimes but I never really understood the actual meaning behind it and now Im on the verge of tears. Ive lost touch with this friend but Ive just been struck with how truly amazing of a person he is.

General Comment:i think theres a reason the song is so short and has a generic one strum of a chord ending. ending of life perhaps?? and life is short??

Song Meaning: Powerful song. From what little I know of the band (as people) I'm gonna say the the meaning of the song is about someone the band knew who used drugs to escape the life they were living. The person probably got too heavy into using and wanted to be saved but by the time that was an option that person couldn't even be saved from themselves. It's sad. THIS IS JUST MY TAKE ON IT THOUGH. (pls don't hate)

General Comment:I believe this song is about a chain of untruthfulness (lying) throughout a persons life, the ones around her (family) and in the world that she lives. Growing up this girl came into the world without the impression of the problems that lie in it. When she grows up she realizes the problems and sees that fixing them is no easy task. When she is desensitized to the world around and her boyfriend tries to tell her that she can make a difference in the world but by then she realizes that it is too late. She tries to change and stop lying but she figures that there is no point since the whole world is doing it and she also thinks that she'll never make a dent in the ocean of problems in the world. I love the Goo Goo Dolls!!!!:))

General Comment:I kind of felt like it may have been about an intervention. As though he's trying to get through to her but she won't listen. And her parents try to help her too but she won't listen to them because they're just as messed up as her. Just my opinion.

General Comment:This song was sort of my anthem in 8th grade and, many years later, it's still probably my favorite song of all time. It's undeniably beautiful.
