He will then be reborn
From 1970's porn
Wearing tubesocks with style
And such an innocent smile

Better pray for your sins
Better pray for your sins
'cause the gay messiah's coming

He will fall from the stars
Studio 54
And appear on the sand
Of Fire Island's shore

Better pray for your sins
Better pray for your sins
'cause the gay messiah's coming

No it will not be me
Rufus the baptist I be
No I won't be the one
Baptized in cum

What will happen instead
Someone will demand my head
And then I will kneel down
And give it to them looking down

Better pray for your sins
Better pray for your sins
'cause the gay messiah's coming

General Comment:In "Tulsa" Rufus says "I fear that savior I have mentioned may be you" in apparent reference to someone he met in Tulsa. So, my assumption is, the gay messiah is from Oklahoma.

General Comment:You all seem to have missed the

    "Rufus the Baptist I be
No, I won't be the one baptized in cum
What will happen instead? Someone will demand my head
And then I will kneel down and give it to him looking down"

being an allusion to john the baptist who whose head was eventually "demanded" albeit a little differently than what rufus has in mind...

General Comment:if hate is dicrimination and discrimination is frowned upon by the church, why then, are gay people discriminated by the church. Everyhting is made for a reson by god, right?

And i understand why he might wanna take out his frustrations about the church out in his songs, wouldn't you if you were in his position?

I think it's high time we all take a step back and realise that being gay is not a bad hting, nor should it really matter. Its the type of person you are that matters and being gay has nothing to do with it

General Comment:I disagree with some of the oppinions posted here and feel that they would be better suited to a discussion about Rufus Wainwright in general than about this song. That said…

I see this song as being a lighter thing born of heavyness; it's no protest song but it's aware of the inequity of the world. I interperted the title phrase to indicate a messiah for the gay community, not Jesus. [Jesus is accepted as the Christian messiah and, due to lots of history I won't bore you with, is the most recognized one in the U.S., but is not the be-all end-all of savior figures.] I see it as being about this young man who is a beautiful and loving person that embodies the lithe boldness of the gay culture hay-days and his sesual purity of purpose touches everyone he meets with that same sort of old-school glitter. That this symbolic manchild would bring forth all that is good about the sort of makeshift family of friends that so many homosexual people find themselves in and show those who were on the outside, judging, what it was they were really saying. And that, while Rufus/the narrator sees the need for this person, he isn't going to claim that sort of responsibilty for himself, just that he can feel the coming change.

General Comment:I would argue that today Chrsitians are being more opressed that gays.

What're you smoking? You know it's rude not to share.

Genuine persecution of Christians is rare, and anywhere it happens, there is far worse persecution for homosexuals. (See the two boys executed in Iran after being caught in bed together for a perfect example)

In the US and other first world nations, Christians aren't oppressed. You're imprisoned, executed, fired from your jobs, or denied ANY equal opportunity under the law. All you do is whine when someone says something you don't agree with, or admits outloud they think your belief is stupid. (Like Sam Harris did) That is not at all oppression or even discrimination. Off the cross, someone needs the wood.

General Comment:This is an absolutely amazing song! I love that it's kind of a way to stick it to those conservatives and other people who think being homosexual is horrid. Love Rufus for being so ballsy with this song. I actually read the lyrics to my Government class (we had to bring in controversial song lyrics) and my class was completely silent while I had a big smirk while reading it.

General Comment:Messiah'. 'It was written ages ago as a party song, to kind of liven up a dinner table,' he says. 'And then as the political climate thickened it became a kind of liberal anthem. On stage I began to preface it with a plea to go out and vote Democrat. And now it has become a kind of literal prayer. We do actually need this divine porn star to come down and teach us what it means to be human again...'

General Comment:And when people are quoting the bible to support the anti-homosexuality (or anti "actually being a homosexual as opposed to a version of it Christianity can encompass") movement, there's plenty of quotes that ring out against women being more than silent, modest figures supporting their husbands and bearing children. Most churches have learned to overlook this for the sake of their survival in a feminist world, accepting that it was simply the practice of the society at the time. I can see parallels
