Lyrics for American Jesus as interpreted by oofus

American Jesus Lyrics
I don't need to be a global citizen,
'Cuz I'm blessed by nationality.
I'm member of a growing populace,
We enforce our popularity.
There are things that seem to pull us under and,
There are things that drag us down.
But there's a power and a vital presence,
It's lurking all around.

We've got the American Jesus,
See him on the interstate.
We've got the American Jesus,
He helped build the President's estate.

I feel sorry for the Earth's population,
'Cuz so few live in the U.S.A.
At least the foreigners can copy our morality,
They can visit but they cannot stay.
Only precious few can garner our prosperity,
It makes us walk with renewed confidence.
We got a place to go when we die,
And the architect resides right here.

We've got the American Jesus,
Bolstering national faith.
We've got the American Jesus,
Overwhelming millions every day.

He's the farmer's barren fields, (In God)
The force the army wields, (We trust)
Expressions on the faces of the starving millions, (Because He's one of us)
The power of the man, (Break down)
He's the fuel that drives the Klan, (Cave in)
He's the motive and the conscience of the murderer, (We can redeem your sins)
He's the preacher on T.V., (Strong heart)
The false sincerity, (Clear mind)
The form letter that's written by the big computers, (And infinitely kind)
The nuclear bombs, (You lose)
The kids with no moms, (We win)
And I'm fearful that he's inside me... (He is our champion)

We've got the American Jesus
See him on the interstate
We've got the American Jesus
Exercising his authority
We've got the American Jesus
Bolstering national faith
We've got the American Jesus
Overwhelming millions every day

One nation, under God...

This is a great song! I feel that it properly expresses the way a lot of people feel about religion and America today. It also has a very great video. I am sure you can find it on IRC in one of punk channels if you ask for it.

I think the song pretty well sums up the hypocritical neo-christian values that this country was founded on. And I agree, the video is awesome.

i think this song is about religion, and life and how things affect us, but also "see him on the interstate", this song is about a guy in america who thinks he is following jesus the right way by doing as he does ie robe sandals etc and sleeping where ppl offer it to him. saw it on tv, true story

I think you guys are hung up on the religion theme. What struck me was the insular nature of America directing our energies inward. And the driving force of our conformity in America. The person we try to be because of societal pressure is a kin to trying to live up to the christian lord

I BELIVE THIS SONG IS SHOWING THE TRUE WAY MANY AMERICANS USING JESUS TO JUSTIFY WHAT THEY DO, WHICH USUALLY ISN'T GOOD THINGS.

...ok...big surprise. Here it is. Song was written after a comment George Bush Sr. made about how america couldn't do wrong in the Gulf War, because Jesus was on the side of America. Which is, of course, psychotic self-imbibing fanaticism, but also a good indicator that intelligence is NOT something that runs in that family. That's still true, actually, many people think that current conflicts cannot go bad because Jesus is "on america's side". (Note the lyrics in the background when Greg's listing what the American Jesus is. In God, we trust, because he's one of us. Break down, Cave in. We can redeem your sins. Strong Heart. Clear mind, and infinitely kind. You lose. We Win. He's our champion) This little post could turn into an hours long political discussion, but i'll stop now.

All religions have fanatics. All countries have people with superiority complexes. We all have stereotypes. It's ok to hate America and Americans, but remember that not all Americans are the "We're better than you" type.

hmm... i feel that this song is a representation of the american government. it doesn't plain out say this, but i'll tell you why i believe it. when the band is speaking of all the higher archies, they refer to the name "american Jesus." i believe they use the name Jesus because he is the most ultimate high. if they want to refer to something very important, they want people to know what they are speaking about is something very powerful. using the name Jesus ultimately makes people think that this is blasphemous when in reality it is just a term (american Jesus) referring to an ultimate higher archy, our united states government. but what do i know? i'm just a 17 year old punk rocker from north carolina.

Yeah this song chokes me up a bit. No wonder Brett's an athiest. I'm a born-again Christian and I can see why people hate organized religon and Christianity so much. Idiots throw the name of Jesus around so much that people hate it. Look at the friggen Crusades. Countless Jews, Muslims, woman, and children were killed and raped all in the name of Jesus. I don't have much of a comment about the song but if there are any of you who hate Christianity n stuff, go ahead. We are stupid humans. But don't hate Jesus. He's much better than us fickle creatures.

for some strange reason in the version of the song i have downloaded (including the video) has different lyrics ("bolstering national faith" instead of "exercizing his authority"). hhhhmmmm, weird. Also if this is about a theory of the american government, someone please explain "and i'm fearful that he's inside me", does this mean greg is afraid he is conforming to government standards and veiws ie. found the "american jesus"?

I love this song, I love the lyrics and the music too. And why do people argue about the lyrics? They're obviously open for interpretation until you talk to the artist and they tell you what the song is about (if the know themselves, that is).

although I'm a major bad religion fan. I'm also a college graduate that can think on his own. And I hope you guys realize following Greg Graffin just because he is in a cool punk rock band. Is equally as bad as blindly following the American Government (which is you by the way) or blindly adhearing to christian Dogma. In other words listen to Greg then research about what his message is. Then either dismiss it or embrace it, Greg isn't God either.
