Lyrics for You as interpreted by oofus

You Lyrics
There's a place where everyone can be happy.
It's the most beautiful place in the whole fucking world.
It's made of candy canes and planes and bright red choo-choo trains,
And the meanest little boys and the most innocent little girls,
And you know I wish that I could got there.
It's a road that I have not found.
And I wish you the best of luck, dear.
Drop a card or letter to my side of town.
Because there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend,
But baby I'm amazed at the hate that you can send and
... painted my entire world.
But I... don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled.
And I won't forget it.
There's a place where everyone can be right,
Even though you remain determined to be opposed.
Admittance requires no qualifications:
It's where everyone has been and where everybody goes.
So please try not to be impatient,
For we all hate standing in line.
And when the farm is good and bought, you'll be there without a thought,
And eternity, my friend, is a long fucking time.
Because there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend,
But baby I'm amazed at the hate that you can send and
... painted my entire world.
But I... don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled.
And I won't forget it.

marskelletor has it - this song is about the afterlife.

There's a place where everyone can be happy.
It's the most beautiful place in the whole fucking world.
It's made of candy canes and planes and bright red choo-choo trains,
And the meanest little boys and the most innocent little girls,
-idealises heaven as a perfection of this world, a playground for happy children

And you know I wish that I could got there.
It's a road that I have not found.
-greg wishes he could also believe this comforting fairytale

And I wish you the best of luck, dear.
Drop a card or letter to my side of town.
-you're free to pursue that fairytale but don't stop being my friend cause i don't follow you to those dreams, to the (religious) side of town

Because there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend,
But baby I'm amazed at the hate that you can send and
- humanity shouldn't be fighting each other, we got bigger problems coming up fast, he's amazed that religion can hate so many with such fervour when they are supposed to be good for you. with tales of the heaven awaiting you, how did they get you to hate all the non-believers?

But baby I'm amazed at the hate that you can send and
... painted my entire world.
But I... don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled.
- simple enough. religion/christianity has painted the entire world, redecorated it so it looks like what their religion tells them it should, and bad religion/the athiests/nonbelievers aren't strong enough to wipe that off and show people how it really is

There's a place where everyone can be right,
Even though you remain determined to be opposed.
- that place is, of course, death, and religions are determined to be opposed to anyone who says that death is the end

Admittance requires no qualifications:
It's where everyone has been and where everybody goes.
- it doesn't take prayers or blessings or a good life free of sin for someone to die. death is the same as pre-birth.

So please try not to be impatient,
For we all hate standing in line.
- don't rush to your death like life is some sort of waiting line for entrance to heaven

And when the farm is good and bought, you'll be there without a thought,
- when you die you'll go to this place, and you'll have no thoughts, no consciousness.

And eternity, my friend, is a long fucking time.
- and you'll be that way (ie non-existent) for ever, stressing the length of eternity a word often bandied around

And I won't forget it
- he's not gonna just give it up anytime soon

Hes talking about love "painted my entire world", he first experienced love with a girl and broke up e.g. "im amazed at the hate that you can send" hes telling her not to worry about the stupid things in life and don't take anything for granted and to live in the present moment. The place hes talking about is death. "It's where everyone has been and where everybody goes. So please try not to be impatient, For we all hate standing in line."

I agree with pinkfade, mostly. Though first time I heard it I was thinking of a very immature friend of mine, it didn't entirely fit since he never painted MY world. Why are there so many comments here? It's good, but I wouldn't say it was the best on the album.

I've heard certain things about this song.

It's definitely a song to a woman who he fell in love with.
But I think it comes down to two things:

1. That it has like a letter to this girl, whom he is in love with. But can't be with her, cause they both live in a world of Religion pressuring them, in living the world that Religion is in, and not what they are in. Like believing that Religion is the cause of every single war and all why people constantly try to fight over whose is right. Like in the lyric "There's a place where everyone can be right, Even though your determined to be opposed." And he can't be with her in that world as in marry her. And he can't do that till he lives in a world of no religion.

2. Another is he is wanting to marry this woman, and believing that all their problems would be solved through marriage. But probably doesn't agree to be married in a church or by a priest. But she can't stand that, but he won't change for her. And the lyrics in the song sound like something from the bible. "Eternity is a long fucking time" "When the farm is good and bought, you'll be there without a thought."

Like please be patient before we can get married to come to terms about this. Like "Please don't be Impatient, for we all hate standing in line"

Just what i think...probably not right

I have a kind of odd interpretation of the song in that I think it's about life in an very idealized version of the west that admits anyone, and using 1950's American white christian interpretations of heaven as an allegory. It's all wonderful and nice and you can say or believe whatever you want "there's a place where everyone can be right even though you remain determined to be opposed" and the people are astoundingly nice and innocent, yet the culture seems to breed a surprising amount of hate for some reason and you're manipulated with no reprieve by the people, media, government, etc which I take from: "but baby I'm amazed at the hate that you can send and you painted my entire world but I don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled". It wears on you until you can't stand it anymore but you just can't bring yourself to leave.

Ok, being an athiest I think this song is about getting told that your going to hell for not believing. When people come up and say things like you'll rot in hell for not believing and whatever else they say, its just like oh well, I don't care. You can tell me I'm going to hell and god won't be happy with me, but that really isn't a consequence for me since I don't believe in it at all. But maybe that's just my interpretation. That's what I got from the "eternity my friend..." line, and the "I'm amazed at the hatred you can..." line, because religious people preach love and acceptance, but when they find someone to be a nonbeliever, they have no love or acceptance for that. At least in all my experiences, anyway...

I'm going to have to agree with the heaven theory and add my two cents.

For me, this song is about the struggle to fight off those religious beliefs instilled upon people as they are growing up. I personally grew up in a christian family and was -painted- many things. As I grew and starting reasoning and questioning "my" beliefs, it was hard for me to shed some of them just because of the fact that up to that moment I have never questioned any of it so it was the only "truth" I knew. I think this also explains the I wont forget it part. We are not born with religious beliefs so yes we are -soiled- with them. Embracing them is the choice of the individual but the fact that it was planted was not.

I think the whole writing letter and path not found and hate that you could send part is just about the imposed religions reaction to our awakening. The condemnation they send our way for going off the path.

The rest of the song I won't comment on cause I agree with the whole heaven thing that many have said before.

This is what the song means to me on a personal note and I am constantly amazed at Greg's ability to not only write intelligent lyrics but the dynamic impact it has on people on different levels. Thanks for reading.

Just substitute "You" with "Christianity" or any religion and you have the substance of the song, it doesn't get any easier.

first of all, Iv just resorted to reading the lyrics off of lyrics.com or something and then participating on here cuz whoever the moron is who posts the lyrics are usually only 90% accurate.

yes, whatever your heaven is, what you want most, everyone will have it in heaven so their will be no need to fuss and fight.. but drop a card by my side of town...my land.. keep in toutch

then he's drawn out of his vision because its only a dream and he has to accept the mortal lame reality.. you..painted for him.

and he wont forget it.

story of my life.

To me it seems he is having an argument with someone about the existance of heaven. in the first verse hes kind of mocking the whole idea of heaven, and in the second verse he introduces the harsh reality that we just return to being nothing, such as this lyric, "Admittance requires no qualifications:
It's where everyone has been and where everybody goes." thank you, feel free to comment.

1st verse is about heaven, which is very self-evident. The 2nd verse is about what really happens when you die... nothing.

"Admittance requires no qualifications"
(Unlike Heaven)

"It's where everyone has been and where everybody goes"
(What was it like before birth? Much like it will be after death. Nothingness. We've all been there.)

"And when the farm is good an bought you'll be there without a thought"
("Buying the farm" means to die. It's a western expression. So when you die, you'll be in nothingness without a thought, considering you wont have a brain to do any thinking.)

"Eternity my friend is a long fucking time"
(Who would want to spend an eternity anywhere?)

Considering Bad Religion's openly atheistic views, I'm surprised people are even arguing what this song is about.

But...along all your interpretations...

think about the political & social criticism that BR are famous for and read the text with that background knowledge.

Because if you ask me...this "dream world" is the world where the rich and famous live, where everything seems to be so perfect and happy and which is "made of candy canes and planes and bright red choo-choo trains". And this "my side of town" would refer to the place where the poor live who will never achieve this "dream land" and who gladly would like a better life. And the poor get poorer and the rich get richer, because the poor don't and will never have the "turpentine to clean" what the rich have "soiled".

So it seems to have similarities with the American Dream...

It's about where we are before we're born, where we go where we die, and what happens in the mean time.

The basic message is that whether or not there is an afterlife (before-life?) there's no point in making a huge fuss about it, because our time here is short, and there's little point in making others' even shorter.

I think this song is about getting into heaven and how its easy to get into unless you commit the sin that some of the members of BR and I have, and how ridiculous that should sound to anyone after the age of five.

I also think its about, how Christians are nihilistically willing to fuck up this world to get into fantasy land, when their dead.

Ah, i've changed my mind about this song...

I think it's about the place we're suppose dot go after death - i.e. heaven. It's about everyone's perceptions and images of heaven, "candy canes and planes and bright red choo choo trains". However, thought greg may be leading us to think that the actual 'place' is heaven, i think maybe what he's trying to say is this mystical place which seems so perfect is in fact no where - endless sleep after death. Hence the "please try not to be impatient, for we all hate standing in line...and eternity my friend is a long fucking time"...greg is trying to tell people to make the most of their life instead of waiting for death and this amazing heaven place we've all heard about that may or may not exist.

DazedZorro, your right Athiest doesnt mea loveless... soulless maybe (just kidding, i may one day become an athiest)

Seriously though I dont think this is a very thoughtful BR song, may just be beyond my mental capacity but based on the rest of your interpretations i dont think thats the case. It is however a decent song for BR which would be a great song by any other band

I've loved Bad Religion since high school, but no matter what, i think of playing Tony Hawk in college and destroying everyone on my floor on the Philly level, haha. Great song, made even greater by the game. Hell when I saw BR 2 years ago they even said "Here's the Tony Hawk song!"

To me this song has dual meaning depending on the way you interpret the lyrics.

Firstly I see this as a song about heaven. The first verse at first talks about the kind of cliched visions of heaven we have, it being a perfect place with "candy canes and planes and bright red choo choo trains", this line suggests its a nice place. Then in the 2nd part of the verse it talks about how he doesn't share this vision. The 2nd verse talk about how everyone seems to be in such a rush to try and get there "please try not to be impatient" and ends with the line that always haunts me "eternity my friend is a long fucking time" which to me means that, well try and imagine how long eternity is...you wouldn't want to spend an eternity anywhere, obviously not in hell but would you even want to spend it in heaven? I'd rather be alive in a shitty world than alive in a boring heaven.

I also see the song as a kind of reverse love song, which im pretty sure Brett has also said in an interview somewhere. It can be interpreted this way if you think of the song talking about a relationship instead of heaven, and the chorus makes more sense this way aswell.
