Lyrics for You as interpreted by oofus

You Lyrics
There's a place where everyone can be happy.
It's the most beautiful place in the whole fucking world.
It's made of candy canes and planes and bright red choo-choo trains,
And the meanest little boys and the most innocent little girls,
And you know I wish that I could got there.
It's a road that I have not found.
And I wish you the best of luck, dear.
Drop a card or letter to my side of town.
Because there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend,
But baby I'm amazed at the hate that you can send and
... painted my entire world.
But I... don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled.
And I won't forget it.
There's a place where everyone can be right,
Even though you remain determined to be opposed.
Admittance requires no qualifications:
It's where everyone has been and where everybody goes.
So please try not to be impatient,
For we all hate standing in line.
And when the farm is good and bought, you'll be there without a thought,
And eternity, my friend, is a long fucking time.
Because there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend,
But baby I'm amazed at the hate that you can send and
... painted my entire world.
But I... don't have the turpentine to clean what you have soiled.
And I won't forget it.

it seems a lot simpler to me. seems like he's just amazed at how much hate a person can send when they're only going to die in the end.

It's about a chick, sorry guys i know BR are a great band when it comes to political comment, but this song is about how quickly someone can change, and how you can love them and hate them at the same time. And finally about trying to get rid of them cos you wanna hate them but can't.

This is just plain and simple a great BR song, but then again all BR songs are awesome. There isnt one i dont like. I think the jist of the song is how fucked up our world is. Thats what alot of BR songs are about. I definetly dont think this song is about a girl. Bad Religion is way to awesome and in depth to be singing about something as insignificant as girls in a world where so much else is more important.

The “place where everyone can be happy”, I interpret this as anything that a person can seek. The way it is described is used to impress upon the listener how important it would be to reach this place, whatever it may be. Think about something that you have always wanted, or you wanted for a long, long time. That feeling when you think about it, how perfect it will be, that is what the singer is trying to impress upon us.

“The meanest little boys, the most innocent little girls” could be a sexual metaphor, which would change the interpretation of the first part (making it a sexual fantasy instead of a lifelong wish). This could also be that everyone has hidden wishes and dreams, even the meanest little boys and the most innocent little girls.

The “dear” he is referring to is the listener (he frequently changes pronouns: you, dear, baby, and my friend, though “my friend” may not be a reference to the listener, but instead people as a whole). “I wish you the best of luck” should be taken literally: “in your quest for your goal, I hope you have good luck”. “Drop a card or letter” could just mean “keep in touch”, or it could mean “don’t forget your friends on your journey”. Or just “don’t forget about me”.

In the line starting “baby I’m amazed at the hate” the lyrics change pace. I think this might just be a real generic “people are stupid” punk sentiment. The part about painting, considering it was preceeded by the hate comment, might mean that “you stomped all over my dream”. Also, I think the lyric is “…at the hate that you consent”, not “can send”

Towards the end, I think it is actually talking about heaven….and that is all I will say now. It is late, my eyes are hurting, I am seeing little floating things…ciao, my swizzles.

Also, Bad Religion quotes The Beatles' song "We Can Work It Out" (The Beatles' lyric: "Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend. I have always thought that its a crime, so I will ask you once again")

yes, very true. thats where they got it. so no "generic punk sentiment".

This is one of BR's songs that still has me puzzled as to what it truly means.

this song is not about a girl. bad religion doesnt write about girls, they are not a girl band. they are an aetheist band, and this song is about heaven. its about how people can supposedly be admitted into heaven after committing their sins, but accepting god. doesnt make sense.

They DO write about girls, just not frequently.

Anesthesia? 1000 Memories?

"You were the one, you were my everything", however, is not your typical relationship song lyrics. Writing songs about girls is not inherently evil, in and of itself...its boy bands and Avril Lavene that make it that way. Bad Religion sings about meaningful relationships...not skater boys or thong-thong-thong-thong-thongs.

Athiest does not mean loveless.

Sorry DazedZorro, but Anesthesia is about drugs...

I still am puzzlled about this song as well, but mostly I think it's about how people try to paint this world as great, and the United States as the best place in the world." When really it's bullshit...

I think this song is mocking the feelings in this country that we and our society are perfect. I think Greg adresses this in the very first few lines of the song wherein hes basically saying that the rich veiw the society as perfect and he compares it to a childlike dreamland. The part where hes talking about mean boys and innocent girls i think he is mocking the gender roles in our society that boys are supposed to mischevous and violent but girls are meant to be proper and innocent. The part after that when hes talking about a letter i think hes saying that your world may be ideal but mine is not ("my side of town"). Then I think hes saying that the people whos lives are perfect (the rich and powerful) seem to be the ones who are full of hate and go out of the way to make others suffer. Basically thats what I think this song is about but like most Bad Religion songs this is very complex and I could be (and probably am) wrong.

i'm in agreeance with the religion idea in this song but i see it possibly from another perspective..

the chorus in particular seems to be sung as if greg was god himself..

'you painted my entire world' refers to how humans have destroyed his creation via wars and waste and consumerism

'.. and i wont forget it' suggests that these humans will pay for their sins in hell

To me this song has dual meaning depending on the way you interpret the lyrics.

Firstly I see this as a song about heaven. The first verse at first talks about the kind of cliched visions of heaven we have, it being a perfect place with "candy canes and planes and bright red choo choo trains", this line suggests its a nice place. Then in the 2nd part of the verse it talks about how he doesn't share this vision. The 2nd verse talk about how everyone seems to be in such a rush to try and get there "please try not to be impatient" and ends with the line that always haunts me "eternity my friend is a long fucking time" which to me means that, well try and imagine how long eternity is...you wouldn't want to spend an eternity anywhere, obviously not in hell but would you even want to spend it in heaven? I'd rather be alive in a shitty world than alive in a boring heaven.

I also see the song as a kind of reverse love song, which im pretty sure Brett has also said in an interview somewhere. It can be interpreted this way if you think of the song talking about a relationship instead of heaven, and the chorus makes more sense this way aswell.

This is the first song i heard by BR, which means i have a lot to thanks Tony Hawk's pro skater for! I think it could be interpreted in either the Religion sense or the Love sense...probebly more love (or just relationship) iin this case though i think.
