Mary's Prayer - Danny Wilson
Everything is wonderful
Being here is heavenly
Every single day, she says
Everything is free
I used to be so careless
As if I couldn't care less
Did I have to make mistakes?
When I was Mary's prayer
Suddenly the heavens rolled
Suddenly the rain came down
Suddenly was washed away
The Mary that I knew
So when you find somebody who gives
Think of me and celebrate
I made such a big mistake
When I was Mary's Prayer
CHORUS:
So if I say save me save me
Be the light in my eyes
And if I say ten Hail Mary's
Leave a light on heaven for me
Blessed is the one who shares
The power and your beauty, Mary
Blessed is the millionaire
Who shares your wedding day
So when you find somebody to give
Think of me and celebrate
I made such a big mistake
When I was Mary's Prayer
CHORUS
CHORUS
If you want the fruit to fall
You have to give the tree a shake
But if you shake the tree too hard,
The bough is gonna break
And if I can't reach the top of the tree
Mary you can hold me up there
What I wouldn't give to be
When I was Mary's prayer
CHORUS
CHORUS
Save me, save me
Be the light in my eyes
What I wouldn't give to be
When I was Mary's prayer
What I wouldn't give to be
When I was Mary's prayer
What I wouldn't give to be (save me)
When I was Mary's prayer
Everything is wonderful
Being here is heavenly
Every single day, she says
Everything is free
I used to be so careless
As if I couldn't care less

When I was Mary's prayer

Aimless in Boston and tormented with guilt for my part in the break-up, I called her after she moved West. That line, "Everything is wonderful, being here is heavenly . . ." is so like her description of her new life, in her new town, with her new friends -without me. It was as if I had never been a part of her life ["Suddenly was washed away the Mary that I knew."]
Few things suck more than the regret and self-pity you feel when you realize just how much your ex has moved on, while your own life has been going nowhere.
"Being here is heavenly" - is a thank you for the gift of life.
"I made such a big mistake
When I was Mary's Prayer "
- this is the thought that, as Mary's "mistake" - he knows that she is thinking about him... he's in her prayers everyday, hopefully.
"If you want the fruit to fall ...... etc" - references the apple not falling far from the tree and trying to "give the tree a shake" to trace his mother.
"But if you shake the tree too hard,
The bough is gonna break "
- maybe he might not be able to handle what he finds?
And if I can't reach the top of the tree
Mary you can hold me up there
What I wouldn't give to be
When I was Mary's prayer
- maybe he can't trace his real mother? If not, he'd give anything to just be in his mother's thoughts - whether she's passed on or not.
The catholic church, and particularly Mary... was a big part of my youth... deeper than Santa Claus...
The bough break and the cradle fell... but I still hope She keeps a light on for me in heaven...
This is a song about murder. Yes, just like when Powers and Wagner met in Hart to Hart, it was moider.
The first verse is standard fare and sets the scene when Danny and Mary met. Oh, the joy, Everything is wonderful. All so care free, ah, those days.
We move on to regret in the next verse. Danny looks back, how could he have killed he one true love in a moment of madness?
You see, Mary met a millionaire and fell for him and his Vauxhall Senator 4.2 GT CXi. Poor old Danny was devastated and confronted her. Mary, in her guilty state of mind did the only logical thing. Yes, that's right, she climbed the nearest Giant Redwood. Danny, with his chronic vertigo (afflicted since he was 5 years old when a serious inner ear infection left him bed-ridden for 3 months. I removed this verse for the final recording to add a bit mystery) was left on the ground accusing Mary of lesbian tendencies.
Well, what could Danny do now? He wanted the the fruit so badly he shook the tree. Little did Danny know that this tree was infested with Dutch Elm disease (a fair assumption really as it was a Giant Redwood). The bough that Mary was straddled upon snapped and she plummeted like a sack of sugar but, miraculously, her fall was broken to some extent by the branches she hit on her descent. Danny cradled her broken body in his arms but Mary was a strong lass and would survive if Danny could get help quick enough.
As Danny rushed into the caravanette to telephone the paramedics the heavens opened and a flash flood washed Mary away over a cliff edge to be pulverised on the rocks below.
People often ask me if the "Hail" was also a reference to the freak storm system which took Mary over the cliff edge but it is, in fact, a reference to the Angelical Salutation oft used by Catholics as a means of punishment in confession. Danny was ordered to recite 37 Hail Marys for killing his girlfriend, a record even in the mid-80s.
Danny, once released from prison on his 10 year manslaughter charge was fully forgiven. The sad twist comes in his death, he was killed in a fall down a pub cellar in pitch darkness.
Mary didn't leave the light on in heaven for him, she was too busy being porked by the millionaire.
