Hello, I saw you, I know you, I knew you
I think I can remember your name, name
Hello, I'm sorry, I lost myself
I think I thought you were someone else

[Chorus]
Should we talk about the weather? (hi, hi, hi)
Should we talk about the government? (hi, hi, hi, hi)

Hello, how are you? I know you, I knew you
I think I can remember your name, name
Hello, I'm sorry, I lost myself
I think I thought you were someone else

[Chorus]

Hello, my friend, are you visible today?
You know I never knew that it could be so strange, strange
Hello, I'm sorry, I lost myself
I think I thought you were someone else

[Chorus]

Hi, hi, hi
Hi, hi, hi, hi
Hi, hi, hi
Hi, hi, hi, hi
Hi, hi, hi
Hi, hi, hi, hi

General Comment:I feel like this song represents Stipe's realization that the band has the nation's ear, and as a pop singer, he has to come up with something to say. Especially as the first track following the more clearly sung and overtly political album Document. To cut the tension, Stipe sings as someone at a loss for words and they name the song the most mundane thing possible.

    Song Meaning:This song is great!
It works really well as an attack against pop music, but I came up with an alternate interpretation a bit more personal.
Anyway, I believe the song is about a guy who's sweet yet not very bright social skills-wise.
The lyrics explain his attempts to strike up a conversation:
"Should we talk about the weather/government?"
Unfortunately, it still doesn't come out quite right, as evidenced by the amount of time he says "Hi."

General Comment:i get the feeling that this song is about two people in a marriage that have basically bored with each other so they talk about the weather and basically have forgotten the point of getting married in the first place.

General Comment:Yeah, all that and people just talk and talk cuz they think they are supposed to and its very often trite and stupid. Maybe they talk so much because they are afraid what they might discover about themselves in their silence.

General Comment:Yea, its pretty much mocking our society and the values that we place on relationships that turn out to be purely physical and have no deeper meaning at all.

General Comment:The song came out in 1988 on the album Green. Apparently it was the 89th song they released.

General Comment:Did this song come out in 1989? I am surprised this song didn't propel these guys to stardom. It's a much more poppy tune than "Losing My Religion". If the first poster is right, then my sentiment would turn the irony back on REM.

    :)

General Comment:The song is supposed to be a generic pop song, and the lyrics are written to show that. Great idea, great song.
