Lyrics for Pale Shelter as interpreted by ruben

Pale Shelter Lyrics
How can I be sure ?
When your intrusion is my illusion
How can I be sure
When all the time you changed my mind
I asked for more and more
How can I be sure

When you don't give me love
You gave me Pale shelter
You don't give me love
You give me cold hands
And I can't operate on this failure
When all I want to be is
Completely in command

How can I be sure
For all you say you keep me waiting
How can I be sure
When all you do is see me through
I asked for more and more
How can I be sure

I've been here before
There is no why, no need to try
I thought you had it all
I'm calling you, I'm calling you
I ask for more and more
How can I be sure

i read in an interview from the 80s with curt that it s about a parent -teenager relationship where the teenager wants the parent's unconditional love yet wants to assert himself and be in control;a paradox

If it's referring to a distant child-parent relationship, that makes sense. They give you shelter, but not love. Not sure why it's pale... maybe because it's more physical [like a house] than emotional [like feeling safe]. It reminds me of my dad in alot of ways. I love the lyrics...

'p.s, if you havent seen the video, keep an EYE OUT for the little kamakazi attack on Mr.Orzabal.'

That's probably my favourite part. Poor Roland, haha!

After reading a few different articles, here's a supposed quote from Roland on the meaning:

"It's a kind of a love song, though more referring to one's parents than to a girl."

Anyway, wonderful song. The Hurting certainly was a great album.

agree with what has been said about this song here; the video is just awesome, this song can fit in about anywhere you put it.

the song and the video mean two different things. the video, while watching it for the first timeseems wierd, is actually really awsome. it's about how lifr can be going your way but in an instant can change for the worse, but can change again as quickly as it did before.

while the song is, really, quite enigmatic. it can either be put in the common aspect and say it's about not receiving the care and respect you want from the one you love, OR, if you tie it to "Mad World" the way it's suppossed to be, then it realy be about anything that fits the bill, eventhe subject of life is a good candidate.

"When your intrusion's my illusion"

"I asked for more and more
how can I be sure"

"I can operate on nthis failure
When all I wan to be is... COMPLETELY IN COMMAND!"

Those lines can actually go both ways.

p.s, if you havent seen the video, keep an EYE OUT for the little kamakazi attack on Mr.Orzabal.

Roland and Curt say this was a plea to a girl's parents or something like that.

Beautiful lyrics - how much can you relate to them when you are in a relationship, especially when one side feels more strongly about the person than the other.

I was in a similar past relationship where my ex was cold hearted and unaffectionate and these lyrics just fitted how I was feeling superbly

I love the guitar in this as well and the handclaps at the end

This songs follows and links to the "Mad World" on the Album The Hurting. Mad world was highlighting the sadness of the world (a very deep philosophical song) whilst this song continues a similar theme of rejection. The whole album is very much underrated and I would recommend listening to it.

This song is amazing! Even though it's apparently about rebellious teens, it sounds to me like someone playing games with his head. I love the music video for this.

In a concert Roland said this song was about being a rebelous teen or maybe the parent of one cant remmber. It does sound cool though. This is definitely an underrated band. What do i think? I think it can apply to anyone whos not getting what they deserve although im sure its deeeper than that. hmph.

What a fun song! It has such a catchy tune.
Does anyone have an idea as to what is being sung during the beginning of the long version of this song?
