Two of us riding nowhere
Spending someone's
Hard earned pay
Two of us Sunday driving
Not arriving
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
Two of us sending postcards
Writing letters
On my wall
You and me burning matches
Lifting latches
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead
Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing so low
In the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
Spending someone's
Hard earned pay
Two of us Sunday driving
Not arriving
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
Two of us sending postcards
Writing letters
On my wall
You and me burning matches
Lifting latches
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead
Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing so low
In the sun
You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home

"You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead"
..is not sweet, but rather very sad?
Beautiful line. They can go sunday driving, road tripping, spend time together -- do whatever, because whatever task they take on is insignificant compared to the relationship between them both and everything they've done. The upbeat, triumphant, nothing can go wrong nature of the song reflects this mindset.
I read at another source that they would get lost in their car and try to find their way back home. Its like an ode to this part of their relationship.
Two of us wearing raincoats
Standing solo in the sun.
You and me chasing paper,
Getting nowhere on our way back home.
The above verse is more ironic. Its like Paul is saying we're doing something unconventional -wearing raincoats in the sun- and we're not solo- they are not chasing paper they are doing something leisurely- they're having a good time. The song is lazy and romantic just as it would be if you and your sweetie went on a let's drive and get lost and then find our way back home kinda thing on a Sunday. Sorry but this is not about Paul and John.
