I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

this is a good song to explain what some jerks can do. i love Avril Lavigne, she doesnt care about what other people think about her. thats how it should always be.

i like a lot of different music (Good Charlotte, Goldfinger, Avril Lavigne, Pink, Jimmy Eat World, Tantric, Smashing Pumpkins, Unwritten Law) , and avril lavigne is a really good vaguely punk, mostly pop singer. i have no respect for the major pop bands (Britney Spears, N Sync) because all their songs are identical, they're all made to improve the pop star's image, and they don't even write their own music or play any instruments. but Avril Lavigne writes her own music and her songs don't show her as some beautiful weak heroine with bleached blonde hair, and that's cool.
anyways, to the song, lol. I would think that it does have something to do with a popular group at her school, but it could be any group that believes itself to be superior to her.

I don't think this song is about guys. I actually think it's about the music business and how they can shut people out that are different. Probably, Avril got rejected by a lot of record labels before she finally stuck to one. It just seems to me that part where she says that she shook their hands and sat up straight would mean something like that. But maybe it's just me. =)

I think this song means something different though...Like maybe there was just a group of popular people who shut her out, until they got to know her. But they actually met her (found out who she really was) by her writing songs. Cuz of how it says, "I write this song/That's what it takes." Maybe it was just one incident where she tried to go up and make friends with a group of people , but she was different...and it just didn't happen the way she wanted it to. That's why she said, "I just don't understand, why you won't talk to me," and, "Don't talk words against me." Because maybe they talked behind her back after gettin' rid of her....Oh well..That's just what I think though.
