Hey where did we go,
Days when the rains came
Down in the hollow,
Playin' a new game,
Laughing and a running hey, hey
Skipping and a jumping
In the misty morning fog with
Our hearts a thumpin' and you
My brown eyed girl,
You're my brown eyed girl.

Whatever happened
To Tuesday and so slow
Going down the old mine
With a transistor radio
Standing in the sunlight laughing,
Hiding behind a rainbow's wall,
Slipping and sliding
All along the water fall, with you
My brown eyed girl,
You're my brown eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing,
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da
Just like that
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da, la te da

So hard to find my way,
Now that I'm all on my own.
I saw you just the other day,
My how you have grown,
Cast my memory back there, Lord
Sometime I'm overcome thinking 'bout
Making love in the green grass
Behind the stadium with you
My brown eyed girl
You're my brown eyed girl

Do you remember when we used to sing
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da (lying in the green grass)
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da (bit, bit, bit, bit, bit, bit)
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da ( sha la la la la la...)
Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da

General Comment:this may not be his best song ever, but it's still special to me, my girl, "the one who got away" so to speak loved this song as do i, and she was my brown eyed girl , who ever thinks thats stupid and sayin it isn't deep n' shit can suck a fat one, it doesn't have to be deep to bring back memories of those perfect moments.

i really miss my brown eyed girl.

General Comment:The mind hears what it wishes to hear, I suppose. It's a beautiful song written by a very talented songwriter/musician. He's reminiscing about the good times he had with the brown eyed woman he loved and with whom he enjoyed great times. It's an INNOCENT track that some apprarently wish to sully. Just wish Van had written the song about a blue eyed girl; we get no respect :)

General Comment:The part that really gives away the fact that this song is about anal sex, but nobody has mentioned and is not properly quoted in the lyrics above:

"Bit by bit by bit by bit by bit by bit, shalala lah ti da." He's not just doing that jazz thing where they make sounds that are cool, like most people think.

Get it? Bit by bit? Kinda have to take it... slowly. Painful if you don't. Anyway, the people who don't want to admit the song's really a big joke disguised as a love song, kinda like Lola by The Kinks (a song about a transvestite), or Everlong by Foo Fighters (a song about a blow job) or Longview by Green Day (a song about masturbating), are probably pretty pretentious in real life and live in the Bible Belt or something.

Song Meaning:I can't believe it took 3 pages of comments before mmmmmm22 got the right meaning... I mean I know it sounds like a love song on the surface, but, hey, all heroin inspired songs do. Yes, brown-eyed Susan is type of heroin. Yes, heroin is often personified as a girl because it interacts the same parts of the brain as sex. Also, because the withdrawal symptoms set in 12-24 hours after the last dose, the addict is compelled to do it often and thus feels as if he/she has formed a relationship with the drug. MANY lines in the song allude to smack but here are just a few - "Down in the hollow, playin a new game"[depressant in a needle, experimenting with h], "our hearts a-thumping" [makes one's blood pressure rise], "going down to the old mine" [again, "down" as in depressant, and "old mine" double meaning-vein and place to shoot up], "slipping and sliding" [trying to find a vein].
No, I have never done heroin. Yes, I have read the wiki page and listened to my share of 70's music.
