amy is a metaphore for amphetimine. when he says he met her at a party and took her home it means he had amphetimine at a party and got addicted and uses it everynight

Yea busman is right. I mean you could still almost look at it like a real girl Amy though too, it's cool how the song works on multipule levels. Definatly one of the best on So Much For The Afterglow and still one of my favorite Everclear songs of all time.

Yeah, there's probably a double meaning to this song. Busman hit it right with amy being a short term for amphetamine, but it also maybe about a girl named amy who is the kind of girl that magazines love to glorify but ended up with a hellish life and got fucked up by amphetamines, the irony being in her name. That's my little theory anyways.

I just read an older interview where Art said that the song was about a girl recovering from a drug addiction.

Kinda like Art, eh?

Anyway, yeah, Art's my hero. Best band that I know of, and Art is just a good role model... for some people

wow... awsome song, amazing cd. i just listened to it for the first time in god knows when. and it brought back all those same unexplainable feelings i had when i first got it. everclear has this power. i will never get bored of them no matter how many years pass.

lol, the "she wakes up in the middle of the night just to tell me that everything will be alright" is kinda cute.. well, not if you go for her not being a girl but a drug version, which of course is ne of the layers, but the idea of a girl fucked on drugs waking up to tell YOU that everything will be ok for her is kinda cute.

I like that line. It basically says that society sees fucked up as perfect. I'm guessing this girl wieghs about 90 pounds. either from the drugs or anorexia or bullimia.

i only just now realized that this is definitely about speed. i just found this part interesting though.

Just to clear things up for those a little in the dark: Amphetamine is the chemical name for what most of us call "speed" (a.k.a phet, amph, wizz, billy, sulph, etc etc). Amphetamine is famous for suppressing the appetite (it can make some people feel physically sick to eat while on amphetamines), thus, most addicts tend to suffer from malnutrition, to the point of serious anorexia in some users.

Most of you have probably heard about/read about the glamourisation of cocaine and heroin, well, speed got similar treatment for a while with the "super pale skin," lack of weight and general visual symptoms of speed use being pretty "cool" and "hip" for a while. Not to mention the way speed's historically been the drug of choice for models looking to lose weight (it gives a massive energy boost, suppresses the appetite and activates fat stores quicker than usual). In fact, for a long time, it was the main ingredient in weight loss pills.

The song, in my opinion, is basically about someone (Amy) addicted to speed, how screwed up the drug's made her and how its seen as "cool" to be this messed up (and if any of you, or people you know, have had problems with speed you'll know it most definitely is not cool).

I never looked at the "I met her at a party and I took her home..." bit as the singer getting hooked on something after initially using at a party, but it seems to add up quite well, I still think the first part is specifically about a different person though. The "wakes me up in the middle of the night" could be referring to the insomnia commonly caused by speed, and the "everything will be alright" line referring to the anti-depressant effects of the drug.

Also, I reckon the "Marriage from hell" is her addiction, and the "Yeah, you just take your pill" referring to the way few people take speed addiction as serious as, say, heroin addiction, even though it can be just as (if not more so) destructive.

Incidentally, the fast tempo, snappiness and power of the lyrics all make this the perfect song to listen to you when on amphetamines... Odd... Coincidence? I think not...

Story of the singer using, and about his uses of, amphetamine (amy, speed), metaphoricly told through the story of a girl who is named amy and uses speed. Important things to know if you've never used amphetamine. Amphetamine is a stimulant, and a euphoric stimulant at that. You're not drunk, you're not stoned, there is no intoxication, no impairment. You're on top of the world. Able to function better than sober in every way, and feel happier than you've felt in a long time. You feel like how you think you should always feel. What sober should be. And that is why amphetamine is so fucked up (as stated in the song). My drug of choice, it is by far the most euphoric drug I've ever done. Have fun, be safe, don't let any drug control you. Don't shoot it up or smoke it
either, way too addictive, and stay away from meth.

I'm not feeling the actual amphetamine interpretation. It just doesn't seem like a song about speed. Drugs don't have these many personal characteristics. MAYBE (big maybe, there) the last few lines have a double meaning, but I kinda doubt it.
