This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
I always thought that the Captain had returned home to his son, only to be turned away since he had chosen the sea and his shop over his family. His son, having not seen his father in so long, originally didn't recognize the Captain, but upon hearing his voice it all became clear. Hence the Captain yelling "I miss you" at the end of the song.
Truly powerful though. When that realization hit me, it completely changed the entire album, in a sense.
i also think it's a father-son thing. I'm not sure if the quotes in the above lyrics are correct, i always thought lines like "I've grown taller now" was the boy speaking; his father has been gone so long he doesn't recognize his home and son until it is too late.
An addeneum to my previous post:
Perhaps the child represents the captain when he was younger. In his quest to return to his carefree, simpler youth, the captain has to be granted it's permission before he can go back. However, his youth doesn't want let him in because the captain's been stained by all the wrong deeds he's done. The final stanza is the captain trying to apologize to his youth about the terrible things he's done.
Here's what I think it's about:
The narrator (the captain) has lost everyone that he holds dear to him ("the storm took them all"), and he just wants everything to be like it was in the past. The only way he thinks he can do this is to die and go meet his freinds in the afterlife (the door he is infront of is the door to the 'beyond'.)
However, the doorkeeper (the child) won't let him in. Due to some previous deeds, he is doomed to live forever and tell his story to whoever will listen, so as to warn others.
If you have ever read the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, you can obviously draw parralells.
Wow I didn't realise this song had so many lyrics...I mean the thing about Slint is that they are soo poetic but you have to listen really hard to hear what dude is saying. I think that he is such a talented singer (ie "Washer" the only song where he actually does sing) and I think his wonderful lyric writing would have stood out more if he had sung the songs instead of talking.

the song is off 'spiderland' released in 1991 and yeah the song is a tribute to the poem Rime Of The Ancient Mariner. I prefer the lyrics being whispered, creates great atmosphere and goes well with the whole 'Slint Dynamics' thing.

when Brian McMahan repeats "i miss you" how the song goes from tranquil to Intense ... is the best part of the song.. this song is excellent although i do wish the music didn't take over brians voice as much... i suppose that would probably take away the effect and would Obliterate the songs incredibility.. so its fine the way it is!
