I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

(This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

This reminds me of an imminent situation I faced when I was selecting a college (I'm 18). I realized that I would have to say goodbye to my girlfriend (who I had a very nice relationship with, and would have liked to stay with). I would have liked to stay in that niche I found for a longer time, but the time had come to leave, and I couldn't forego my long-term plans to stay with this girl. So I listened to this song and it sorta prepped me for my impending situation. It's a sad song but it's also a great one.
By the way, I ended up staying close by for school (for reasons other than my girlfriend) and we stayed together. I still love this song though.
Yeah, don't think this has anything to do with Christ, but hey interpret it how you want. I remember hearing that this song was inspired by Leaving on a Jet Plane, a song similar in theme and also really memorable.
This song is so meaningful for me right now. This guy I have been dating keeps having to leave for school, so when he does, we leave it at that, but once he comes back, we spend as much time together as we can, and our last night is always really difficult, we just lay there in eachothers arms, wishing we could slow down time.

The Jesus and military interpretations are highly unlikely given the fact that Eagle Eye Cherry is Swedish, and Sweden is both very secular and anti-war. But hey, there are variations within cultures, so you never know...

I'm really sad to see how you Americans try to fit in a grotesque cliché, seeing religion and war in love song from Sweden, a country that hates the Church and the army. I've read all the comments and almost every one of them is about Jesus or a soldier, it seems you can't separate the notion of love (which is supposed to be the supreme form of beauty) from the religion and your nation and it freaks me out.

this song can be interpreted in many ways..but the real story behind this song is, as my social studies teacher told me that it is a military thing. it is about the world war. during the world war, adolf hitler persecute them(jews).. they are like saying that they are going to fight for their rights, they are going to leave their families and loved ones to join in the war, they do not know what would happen to them if they still continue to fight but it is worth it because in that way they could protect their families from danger,it is not easy though but they had to do it.

this song is really great. it's about knowing that a real relationship cannot work out, but deciding that having one good night is better than nothing. it's about losing yourself in someone for a short time.
