Lyrics for Santa Monica as interpreted by Demau Senae

Santa Monica Lyrics
I am still living with your ghost
Lonely and dreaming of the west coast
I don't want to be your downtime
I don't want to be your stupid game
With my big black boots and an old suitcase
I do believe I'll find myself a new place
I don't want to be the bad guy
I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to see some palm trees
Go and try to shake away this disease

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
Watch the world die

I am still dreaming of your face
Hungry and hollow for all the things you took away

I don't want to be your good time
I don't want to be your fall-back crutch anymore

I'll walk right out into a brand new day
Insane and rising in my own weird way
I don't want to be the bad guy

I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to feel some sunshine
I just want to find some place to be alone

We can live beside the ocean
Leave the fire behind
Swim out past the breakers
And watch the world die

this song is describing basically a relationship where one person wants to let go of everything else and just be with that person but the other person is still thinking about other people and kind of ignoring the other until they need them. the person who is devoted feels trapped and basically just wants to get away. i think we've all had that kind of relationship before.

I love the part where he says "With my big black boots and an old suitcase "... it's the best!

Strange, that's my favourite part too. I like how he emphasizes "boots"a little bit.

Art's had some mental problems as a lot of people know (look at Normal Like You, Amphetamine, etc...), and this song is (i think anyway) about his suicide attempt when he was living in Santa Monica. Just look:

I don't wanna be your downtime: I don't want to annoy you anymore

With my big black boots and an old suitcase I do believe I'll find myself a new place: Not taking much with him, he's leaving this town (life).

I just want to see some palm trees/Try and shake away this disease: Take me to paradise, I'm sick of being sick.

Live beside the ocean: Heaven

Leave the fire behind: Turbulent life

Watch the world die: see what he left behind all go wrong

Etc. I hope this makes sense. This is just what I think, anyway.

The world is surely going to destroy itself. I just want to find someone who will leave it all behind with me. Just sit out on the beach in our lawn chairs (with our beer) and watch the world die.

I love Everclear, and this song is easily the band's best. So Much For the Afterglow is such a good cd, I suggest if you're a loser and do not own the cd, go pick it up for the five-ten bucks you can at Best Buy. I'm real happy I did, and I like listening to this song more than any other on the cd. Art is such a great song-writer, and he's old too, so hes an old rocker guy, yea that rocks.

this song seems to be about letting go and leaving. the world is falling apart and everything reminds him of what he's trying to forget. it's an affirmation of all the stuff that was wrong with the relationship, the self destructive nature of it all.

i LOOOVE this song
it makes me wanna jus kick back at the beach with close friends and forget all the shit around me
the part where he says "watch the world die"
its like watching the world fall asleep... where everything is peaceful again.
the beach symbolises peacefulness....
looking out over the ocean is supposed to be relaxing and peaceful...
hence... we can live beside the ocean (live where its peaceful)... leave the fire behind (leave the rest of the world to its turbulence and destructiveness)... swim out past the breakers, watch the world die...
best song by everclear

I think this song is about loving someone so much, but knowing that everyday life is taking its toll on the relationship. It's about wanting to go to a beach, which I think represents anywhere that keeps you happy, and living there, leaving behind your troubles and just relaxing. Knowing that the world is fucked up and wanting to swim out past the breakers to watch it detroy itself, knowing you are safe with the one you love.

i always thought it was about how love can save you from chaos. it's a fucked up world, but when your with the 1s you love, you're at peace. Hense, they can swim out to the breakers and watch the world die- when he's with his girlfriend, he forgets all his problems.
