Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home

When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer you know I'll take you there

I hear your voice, it's like an angel sighing
I have no choice, I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes, Oh God I think I'm falling
Out of the sky, I close my eyes
Heaven help me

When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer you know I'll take you there

Like a child you whisper softly to me
You're in control just like a child
Now I'm dancing
It's like a dream, no end and no beginning
You're here with me, it's like a dream
Let the choir sing

When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer you know I'll take you there

When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel a power
Just like a prayer you know I'll take you there

Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home

Just like a prayer, your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me, you are a mystery
Just like a dream, you are not what you seem
Just like a prayer, no choice your voice can take me there

Just like a prayer, I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me
Just like a prayer, I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me
Just like a prayer, I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me
Just like a prayer, I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me

Just like a prayer, your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me, you are a mystery
Just like a dream, you are not what you seem
Just like a prayer, no choice your voice can take me there

Just like a prayer, your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me, you are a mystery
Just like a dream, you are not what you seem
Just like a prayer, no choice your voice can take me there
Your voice can take me there, just like a prayer

General Comment:I believe that Madonna is cleverly mocking the church, and I love it. The song is obviously about blow jobs, but also about sexuality and the closeness of a partner. She uses prayer as a front to describe the euphoric and almost spiritual feelings she has with her sexual partner. I believe she alludes to the giving up of traditional sheepish christian beliefs in the first part of the song when she says "life is a mystery/everyone must stand alone." Then she transitions into "I hear you call my name, and it feels like home." Meaning enjoy life and sex and all of those wonders and find faith in living.

General Comment:I've been wondering what the "Everyone must stand alone" mean. I think it means that Old Souls are loners.

General Comment:The song is about forbidden love. Its one of the most painful types of love, someone can experience.

Being in love with someone, and wanting to be with them, but everytime you make a move to make it happen, something bad happens. In the video, the guy is arrested and taken away. The crosses catch on fire etc.

Basically, the more you try to make it happen, the further God drifts away.Deep down you know, you don't have his blessing. You have to let them go,no matter how painful this is.

General Comment:Where do I start and begin with Like a Prayer?-Definitely and defiantly Lady Madonna's best song because there are three definitions and meanings-1. Like a Prayer is a brilliant and sad hard rocker about her mother's sad death. In the video to the song, Madonna runs across the hill, fearing something absolutely harrowing and terrible has happened in that God-shaped hole: Her mother is not there. To Echo Bono's writing (Bono also had a motherless childhood!) in U2's deranged dance piece Mofo on the 97 techno-crazed record Pop 12 years later, Madonna cries "Soothe, show me mother! Am I Still Your Daughter?" As the crosses rage and burn an unholy hellfire, Madonna finds her own heaven as she cries "Life is a mystery/Everyone must stand alone/I hear you call my name and it feels like home...Just Like a Prayer/I'll take you there/It's like a dream to me!"-And with that, Madonna relieves and comforts her sadness, knowing that she will never forget her mother. 2. The song becomes a live favorite at her concerts-a staple during Blonde Ambition, Reinvention, Sticky/Sweet and MDNA, Ultimately grateful and that for her audience that her biographer Lucy O'Brien calls "The Rock Crowd." And Finally-With Like a Prayer, Madonna gets total and ultimate respect from Rock Critics. USA Today calls Madonna "Rock's most durable and ultimate Alpha Female!" Conversely, Rolling Stone Ranked Like a Prayer #306 out of the Top 500 Rock Songs of All Time-they said "Underneath Madonna allure, there is a haunting sadness...As close to art as Pop/Rock gets!" Therefore my Stoner Friends rank Madonna a very high #36 out of Top 100 Rock Acts. In the end, Like a Prayer is a Madonna triumph-a brilliant #1 hit that sealed her immortality and brilliance. Like a Prayer is a beautiful Rock Hymn of Transcendence. Like a Prayer will always Take Me There! Your move, Lady Madge!

General Comment:I don't think this song has any sexual meaning behind it. People are going to jump to that conclusion because it's Madonna and she's always racy like that. If the song has sexual meaning behind it, then it sure fooled me because that's not what I feel when I listen to this song.

To me, the song is about being saved by God. She hears him calling her name to save her and while it's a mystery to her, it feels right (like home). I don't know for sure, but that's what I relate it to because when I was saved, I had a similar experience. It was difficult to understand what I was feeling, but it felt right to me. I could feel God and it brought me to my knees.

General Comment:Hilarious too see people gross out when they hear this song is about a blowjob.

75% of the lines in this song apply to giving head, the rest is most likely clutter to match the rhymes and flow of the song.

And when you think that everything with prayer and heaven in it, means it must be about religion, then you have never had sex soo good that it got you into a trance-like state.

My Interpretation:i think the meaning is on the video. A think is about finding safety in religion in an almost sexual way. The video I think also talks about racism. First she saw how a woman is raped by a group of white men but then when a black man come to help her he is arrested by the police, just because he's black. Madonna, with fear, runs to Church where she starts praying to a black saint, so she enter a trance and there she is connected with this saint who she loves and wants him to help the black man. In that trance she feels love and mystery for the Saint and then saw many images about racism such as burning crosses like the Ku Ku Klux Klan. at the end she returns to normality and find a group of black people in the church and sing an dance with them. At the end, full of courage by her "revelation-trance" she manages to go to jail and she liberate the black man, because she is the only witness, and at the end she starts a sexual relationship with him guided by the desire of the trance.

General Comment:Song is about satan. Calling on satan, recieving satan's power etc. It's a worship song to satan, hence the black robes and the "falling into the pit" at the end.
